Good course

The course is nice but we weren’t aware of how wet the course actually was. The fairways were sloppy the greens were in decent shape played steady. It was my first round here. But next time I’ll check if it’s cart path only I won’t play. Other than that it’s a good course for the money.

Exceptional Golf on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast

The Oaks Golf Club, located in Pass Christian, MS is a one-of-a-kind golf club. The course is situated among the majestic timberlands and native wetlands of Mississippi’s Golf Coast and provides an unforgettable golfing experience. The Oaks Golf Club first opened in 1998 and over the years has received its fair share of accolades including 4 ½ Stars as a “Best Places to Play” from Golf Digest, “Best Courses You Can Play” by Golf Week Magazine, “Best Course on the Coast” by readers of Coast Magazine and “Golf Course of the Year for the Mississippi Gulf Coast”, The National Golf Course Owners Association.

Over the years, the Oaks has also challenged some of the best players in the country, serving as a host course for the former Nike Tour/Buy.com Tour(now the PGA TOUR’s Nationwide Series) in 1999 and 2000. They also hosted the first stage of the PGA TOUR Qualifying School in 2003.

The Oaks Golf Club was originally owned by Landmark Land and was designed in-house by two employees, Stephen Caplinger and Chris Cole. The course bore the brunt of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 and over 3,000 trees were lost, although unless you knew better, you’d hardly notice. Russ Bloom is the Owner and General Manager and is well-respected in the golf industry. Russ played college golf at San Diego State and then as a touring professional for four years and now coaches several of the top high school and college players in the area.

As you make your way around this par-72 championship layout you’ll find lush fairways with strategically place bunkers off the tee and around the green, dramatic green complexes, creating a serene and peaceful golf experience.

The first four holes at Oak Hills Golf Club set the stage for what’s to come. Many players will consider them short however they are extremely tight and require a tremendous deal of accuracy. Getting off to a good start on these holes is essential so you may want to consider something less than driver off the tee. On these holes, positioning is much more important than length.

Number 6 is a good looking par 5 dogleg left that seems to just keep turning left. At 517 yards from the Blue tees, long-ball hitters may be able to go for the green in two with a good drive down the right side. There’s a lot of undulation in the fairway which can lead to the dreaded uneven lie! For many players, the bunkers on either side of the fairway about 70 yards from the green can easily come into play on the layup shot. The elevated green slopes back right to front left and is guarded by a very deep bunker on the right.

Hole #7 is a challenging par-3 and features the only water hazard on the front nine. It plays 172 yards from the Blue tees over a pond to an elevated green with a deep bunker between water and green.

As you make your way around the course, you’ll find areas where the rough is considerably longer; it’s not exactly wetlands however it might be when it rains. Bringing any of these areas into play can make a par a lot tougher. Number 13 is a good example of this. It’s a dogleg right, par 4 with deep grass on the right, near the corner of the dogleg. Off the tee, the landing area gets smaller is you reach the corner of the dogleg, so it may be wise to hit something less than a driver. A good drive will leave a mid-length approach shot into a well elevated green protected by a long narrow green on the left.

Seventeen and eighteen are two good length par 4s and perhaps the best back-to-back finishing holes on the gulf coast. Number 17 plays 396 yards from the Blue tees and, if the wind is blowing, it’s probably in your face. Fairway bunkers are in play on either side off the tee, with the one on the right being a lot more difficult to play from. The green features lots of undulation and is guarded by a bunker front right. Number 18 is a long narrow hole that plays 411 yards with a fairway bunker on the right side that can be reached off the tee. Most players will be looking at a long iron or hybrid into the elevated green that is flanked by deep bunkers on either side, There’s nothing wrong with ending the round with a par!

The Oaks Gold Club offers a tax-free membership program (There is no tax on membership programs in the state of Mississippi). The Platinum Membership program includes unlimited golf, cart, and unlimited range balls, 14-day advanced tee times, complimentary tournaments in July and December and much more! Fees run $199/month for an individual/$299 for a couple. Bigger discounts are available if you pay upfront! The Oaks will even throw in a free hat! Corporate and Group Rate memberships are also available.

The Oaks Golf Card also offers tremendous value and makes a great gift. For $99 you’ll receive a complimentary first round of golf as well as entry in two tournaments of your choosing, a free replay, a comped twilight round when you bring three paying guests, 10 small buckets of range balls and lost more.

Last Word: The Oaks Golf Club is a lot of fun to play, no matter whether you’re a seasoned veteran golfer or just taking up the game. This well-treed parkland golf course has plenty of water and wetlands, coming into play on no less than half the holes. The greens are in great shape and roll true. It’s obvious that the maintenance crew is diligent in their efforts to keep The Oaks Club looking as good as it does.
The Oaks features a good mix of wide-open holes and those that require control off the tee. It takes a good mental game as well if you want to post a low score out here. Bunkers seem to be very penal; deep with a lot of mounding around them. Nothing wrong with that.

The next time you’re considering a golf trip to Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, be sure to include at least one round at The Oaks Golf Club. Tee times are available online and through most golf packagers.

Overpriced !

Not worth the money! First time playing the course and it was a big let down after reading other reviews. The person that checked us in did nothing but take our money. Never told us where to go hit range balls, where to go get carts or even where the first tee was! The course was average at best. Lots of places with no grass at all and what few yardage markers there were, had dirt and mud covering them. You can get A LOT better course and golf experience for less money!

Great value and great golf course

An excellent place to play. Buy the $99 card if you plan on playing more than once. Clubhouse staff is fantastic and very helpful. Grounds crew is also very helpful and friendly. I have been playing this course for 3 years now. Becoming a favorite place to play. Always a good day.

Great Course

Upon arriving it’s a gorgeous view coupled with a nice cozy clubhouse. The staff was very friendly and helped with anything they asked. For being December 2 I expected the course to be in less than ideal conditions.I was wrong. The tee boxes and greens were absolutely phenomenal. We got there and use the range and putting green and still enough time to get off before the event. The pace of play was outstanding. I would recommend this course to my friends who are relatively experienced because it is tight and challenging. I loved every hole they had to offer.

Yikes!!

Was traveling through Biloxi on my Honeymoon. We decided it was worth a stop on our way to Jack Nicklaus’ course in New Orleans based on reviews. It’s a great layout, but the price for the value is off. The bunkers and greens are on par with a municipal course. Parts of the cart path disappear into construction zones with zero signage. Construction workers laying on cart paths Could luckily point you in the right direction. Last but not least, the man that lives on 16 will absolutely cuss you out if you go OB into his yard. He obviously gets bombarded all day, his house is 10 feet from the fairway. Anyways.. if you’re in Biloxi or traveling through, just keep going straight. (The guy on 16 will appreciate it)

Do Not judge this course until you have personally played there.

I read a May review and convinced myself it was a terrible place, nothing could be farther from the truth.

While staying in Biloxi I FORCED myself to make the drive and to see for myself how bad it could be. It is a GREAT layout in excellent condition and the greens are emaculate. There is nothing to say even remotely bad about this course.

Plenty of tee boxes for all skill levels and a challenge from all. Greens are beautiful and have some real undulations on some of them. Front side is in a subdivision feel but not intrusive. The backside is in the boonies, do not try to walk.

I learned something about Golf Advisor, that all serious golfers need to get think about doing. I nearly missed this gem because I accepted the May review as current condition. If we serious golfers would post more frequently and be objective it will help us all to play better conditioned layouts. Maybe it will slide lesser quality layouts to improve.

Bottom line is The Oaks is a quality facility worthy of your visit. It is in great shape!,,

Nope

Do not waste your money. Asking premium price for the course and the greens are trashed. For the amount of money you would figure they could afford the pesticides and keep the greens nice. I have seen $30 courses with better greens and they’re asking $90 for this place done waste the money.

Still one of the Gulf Coast's finest

The Gulf Coast has many options for quality golf. For 20 years now, the Oaks has been one of the Mississippi Coast's top golf destinations. It continues to be today.
Played yesterday for the first time in about a year, and the course was as good as I remember it. The course eases you in with 2 relatively mild par 4's before hammering you with a longer 4, followed by a short 4 with a green you can't see from the tee. From there it's game on. There are nice elevation changes, nothing major, but enough to make flat-landers work a bit harder on shots. The shot values are great, and the course is set up so everyone from low to high handiappers can have a great time. The course was in great shape and most of the greens were perfect. If there was one thing about this course that has changed over the years that is not a positive, it's the homes going up all around it. It's beautiful land and I've played this course since it opened up, pretty much at least once a year. Originally there were very few homes around the course, now there are homes on many holes. They don't really take away from the course, but whenever you find a course mostly secluded in the woods and you have that feeling of being surrounded completely by nature, it's special.

The course isn't long and doesn't really play long. There are several greens with a couple of tiers to adds to your fun, and some greens perched above fairway height , as well as a couple below it. While the par 3's take the spotlight on this course (as well as the gorgeous par 5 sixth hole), the short par 4's might be the most fun on the course. Holes 1,4, 13, and 14 are short-ish par 4's (13 can be long from the back tees, but from the front tees you can gamble a little and get inside 100 yards off the tee). On these holes you can lay back or hit the big stick and still have varying wedge shots in. It all makes for a fun course, with plenty of scoring opportunities, but also plenty of challenges.

Fun course

The course starts out as a typical subdivision golf course, but it gains character as you go. The course was in excellent condition in spite of all the rain they have had in the last month. The greens were fast and smooth. The tee boxes were in good shape, and the fairways were in very good condition.

Have a GPS

The course is nice and well maintained. It does suffer a few bad spots on the multiple greens, but they are around the edges. The scorecard had only yardage, with no hole overview; they did sell a nice book with all the holes detailed but I found this to be a little bit much. Great deal on Golfnow but it would be a stretch for value if you paid full price.
