Still A Challenge
I heard many horror stories about the condition of this place. Happily most were wrong. Is the course lush and perfect, no, we're in a drought. It is very playable and I'm sure they will work to restore it to it's former glory.
Not the best experience
Expected more from a dye/couples design. Layout is just ok. Course conditions poor. Pace of play bad. Bunkers were dirt and rock. Greens rolled well and staff was friendly
Course was wide open
Nice pace of play as the course was wide open! It was a Monday and no cart person was working. Picked up a very good turkey sandwich at the clubhouse and a few beers. Overall great day!
Oh, how far they've fallen
I convinced my golf buddies, who haven't played the course, to pay the extra money and drive the extra distance to play here. When we got to the clubhouse to sign in i wanted to buy some new golf balls. They had no selection at all and the staff member tried to sell me some cheapo's. No thanks.
As we went to the driving range i noticed the second course had closed. Bummer. (personally, i think its a better course but i get it with the water shortage)
The driving range was fine but when we got to the first tee we all noticed how poor the landscape was managed. The first green, as well as about 80% of the greens, were couliflowered and rough. The rest were super fast and great but you just couldnt get a consistent bead on the ball action.
We finished our round with frustration, thinking it would be better at the club house with a beer and burger. Wrong again. The cook proclaimed at 2:50 that he was closing the kitchen at 3 and only had cold cuts. Lame attitude.
Overall the experience was frustrating and not worth the price.
Lost Canyons Golf Club (Sky)
The course has been looking greener and greener as I drive by it, so have been meaning to play here again. While far from lush, the conditions across the board are improved from my last visits here 2+ months ago. Teed off @ 1:30pm on a Golfnow Hot Deal, $22.49 w/cart. High 70's and fairly windy. Played the Golds (6740/75.6/143) as a 2some with Eddie, a Knollwood employee in 4H.
The tees were furry for my taste, a bit unlevel but had good coverage.
The fairways and rough were both surprisingly good, much better than the last time I played here. Not plush, but not really thin either, with good coverage overall. Definitely greener than a few months ago, and with more grass, the course was playing longer.
The green side traps were decently maintained with OK sand. Most of the fairway traps were hardpan, firm with some weeds. Both were better than the last time I played here.
The greens had been recently vericut and were a little bumpy. They were hard, not firm and putted medium speed.
The customer service from everyone encountered was good. I would certainly NOT pay close to rack rate for this course, even though it is the closest course to my house. However, if you can get a deal it is worth it. Excellent layout even if the conditions are mediocre.
Won't be back
the course is not in good shape. The carts are dirty and drive like they're not maintained. The hot deal was not worth it at all. I'll stick to the nicer courses in the area like Rustic Canyon.
Needs help
The fairways are in poor shape but the greens are ok. There is limited water on the course so bring your own. In general the entire course needs work. And now that they only have one course u would think they would stay on top of it. Yes it is a drought but u need to do something. Also if u hit a ball offline it is a goner just about every hole.
Lost 9 iron
The course is extremely difficult around the greens. The cups are cut tight all short putts need to be dead center. Make sure you ask the shop what PIN number is playing. Pins were in the proper place. Greens a little wet and a few bumpy patches. Mostly I had fast true puts. If you spin the ball a lot it's fun.
I had my nine iron stolen from the bag drop area when I checked in. There were not a lot of people around. I think they should put up a camera in that area. Don't leave you bag unattended at this course even for a few minutes!!! Bing it in the pro shop set it down and go pay. I hope this helps.
Course is playable, fair, fun and a good value.
Enjoy
Trying to be fair about drought, but going downhill
I've played here a dozen times in the past but hasn't been for a while. I know we have a serious drought and I really don't know how much and to what degree that effects golf course, I'm guessing a lot.
It was dryer than I anticipated but the greens were nice and moist all day. They rolled pretty true but still hard to read (as always).
I truly dislike that they do not provide water throughout the round. I mean it's simi valley, put some water coolers on the course. I'd spend way more on beer if I didn't have to drop $10 on water to keep myself hydrated all day.
We were there on Sunday too and watched to watch some football in the bar, have some beer and food, then see that the TV in the bar is a box style TV, like the one I had when i was a child. I mean, get a flat screen, honest to god. They def lost out on about $45-60 on my two-some for that simple reason.
We also had to push our cart up the hill to get to the clubhouse after 9 HOLES because the cart was dead, SUPER NOT OK, especially because it was not a busy day by any means.
It used to be one of my favorite courses in LA but realizing that it is going downhill in a major way. Hopefully this winter will help the course and get them to make some much needed upgrades or I'm going to stop driving 40 min to get there.
Lost Canyons Has Lost Its Way: Can It Come Back?
This is no doubt an interesting golf course which one day was top notch. It has lost its way and the facility is down to one course that is in rough shape. The 10th hole is in the best shape of the entire course. Most fairways are in rough shape with weeds, rough patches, and other issues. The greens were mostly in bad shape with brown spots, weeds, dried dirt. Maybe due to water restrictions.. Many golf shots that should have landed on the fairway wound up in trouble so play target golf here. On a hot day the course had no water for players, no food/bev carts or even ice chests for carts. Did not see any personnel working the course. Pro shop is sparse at best but staff is nice enough. There are probably many better courses to play in greater LA area so don't go here as a destination. Restaurant/food area closed early afternoon so on a 100 degree day we could not buy food or drink. Overall a bit disappointing but you could see that this once a really nice course.
This course will soon be history
This used to be a beautiful golf course. The management has obviously decided to let it go. The course is all dried up and in terrible condition. Weeds everywhere, the greens are all beat up. The only employees I saw the entire day was the guy behind the counter and one guy on a lawnmower. What a shame!!! Would not play here again.
Excellent Value for Money - Views are worth it
We read some of the previous reviews, and I think maybe our expectations were a bit lower. The drought conditions have definitely affected the course, but all things considered, the course was in very good shape, given that they have to manage the water so carefully. The greens were good, and the fairways were very playable, although patchy in places. The views are worth the drive from Los Angeles.
We played as a twosome by ourselves, in about 3 and a half hours on a Saturday afternoon.\, and by booking through Golfnow.com we played for $30 each. I am not sure I would have the same review had we paid full rate, but that is probably true of all courses in the LA area right now.
Great views!
Super fun challenge. Blind shots and intimidation abound. Demands all shots.
Abandoned course
This course should not be opened. I've never played a layout in such bad condition. The greens were pock marked and had a lot of invasive grass. The bunkers had no sand and had weeds growing in them. The tee boxes were uneven and overgrown or little grass. Besides all that it's a confusing layout. We had no idea where to aim on the tee box on most holes. Don't waste your time or money. They should raze this place, burn it down and cover it with salt.
No Water Available
The course was in great shape. My only complaint is there was very little to no water available on the course. There needs to be water available for your guests. That is unacceptable.
Beautiful views, terrible condition
The course was in terrible shape. The fairways were brown and rock hard! Greens had numerous unrepaired ball marks and some had an invasive species of grass growing on them. Sand traps were like hitting off of concrete. Thankfully, I paid a discounted rate for this course. Will not be back.
Sky Course
There were maybe 20 cars in the lot when I teed off so POP was not an issue. Played 18 as a single in 2H, 45M, which included hitting practice putts and chips on many holes. Played the Golds (6740/75.6/143) in mid 90 heat. Fairly windy, which kept it cooler than it sounds.
The greens are fairly smooth but a little slow, medium speed. They actually putt better than they look. Many greens have some brown spots and a few hardpan or weedy areas along some edges. Firm in spots, spongy in others, with a decent amount of unfixed ball marks.
There isn't that much difference in the fairways and rough, both are thin overall. Lush in places with bare spots mixed in with more weeds than you would normally expect in a fairway. Most of the fairway traps were in very poor condition, firm/crusty with weeds taking them over.
The traps close to the greens were adequate, not recently raked with OK sand. Neither had been recently raked.
The customer service from everyone was a ++. I would certainly NOT pay close to rack rate for this course, even though it is the closest course to my house. However, on a deal like today, it is well worth it. When you can play 18 with a cart for barely more than twice a large bucket of balls @ most ranges, it is worthwhile practice at the very least. The layout is excellent even if the conditions are mediocre, and playing 2 rounds in a row as a single with practically the course to yourself is a real plus compared to 5+ hour rounds waiting on every shot. If you go in with the right mindset, this is well worth it in my opinion.
Good track, CA drought impacting tees and fairways
i liked the course. Staff friendly and helpful. Restaurant/bar very nice with good menu.
Course was a fun layout. Some blind shots, very few forced carries. Green were in GREAT shape even considering drought.
5 minutes from town, but miles away.
Lost Canyons is a gem that feels like it's in the middle of nowhere. I arrived around 9 AM and after a few range balls was able to tee off right away as a single. I played through two groups (one on each side) and finished in about 3 hours. The greens were beautiful (and difficult); the views were spectacular, particularly from the 11th and 18th tee. There was no beverage cart and I was unaware of the only bathroom/water fountain until the second nine, so stock up before you tee off. The elevation changes make this course fun and challenging (especially the downhill drive on #12). I'd come back without hesitation.
Very rough conditions
Sky course is apparently all that is left here. The course itself and the facilities are rather dated. No GPS carts contrary to claims. Course itself seems to have been neglected for years. Greens significantly eroded with lots of fungus and large patches worn down to the geotextile. Bunkers dont appear to have been groomed in months - rock hard, full of debris, lots of creeping in of the surrounding grass. Signage very poor, NO waste baskets or ball washers at any of the tee boxes. GolfNow hot deal price (28) was appropriate, but full price (125) is absurd.
