Such a shame
I believe my title sums up my thoughts on this track. It is suck a great track cut into a beautiful piece of land, but the clubhouse is a ghost town. Service was acceptable, it just has a sad feeling. As in, it feels like this course may be closed before I get another chance to play it.
The actual course is in rough shape. I am sure the drought has something to do with it, but the fairway sprinklers were grown over so watering is likely down to a minimum. The bunker I played from was all clay and no sand. The greens however rolled true for the most part with some rough looking spots on a few greens.
My golf partner and I are both mid single digit handicappers and were up for a challenge, so we played from the back tees. Unfortunately we either couldn't find a few of the back boxes or they just browned out grass or just in rough shape. Just kind of shows the lack of attention to details the course is showing.
The bridges throughout the course are deteriorating.
All in all, this is a challenging track that has just lost its top class pedigree (long ago). It's a shame that the course was not able to maintain its luster, but then again, it would be a much more expensive round of it were up to high standards. If you're up for a challenge (firm fast course) and you can get out on the cheap, do it. Otherwise, there are other options within 15 miles of this course that I would rather play.
I really enjoy playing here
This place is challenging, yes, i also feel it makes me a better player.
Ready to close?
PROS: Beautiful clubhouse. Nice staff
CONS: Horrible dry brown fairways. Greens are pitted and some are rough. Old carts and no gps. Yardage sprinklers are hard to find. Absolutely NO SHADE. NO ballwashers. To top it off, the grill wasn't even open.
Cannot compare in most ways to most muni golf courses.
Sunday golf
First time playing Lost Canyons and I don't think I will be going back. The fairways were in pretty rough shape, but I understand that is partly due to the water situation. The bunkers, however, had not been raked for days and felt like you were hitting off concrete. The greens were in decent shape, but were extremely firm and tough. We teed off at 1:30 in the afternoon but did not see a beverage cart or water fountain the entire round. A little disappointing considering it is so hot and dry out there.
Overall, not the best experience and not worth the drive or money.
So much potential, but course neglect and zero effort
I've played a few times... it's a tough track, demands well hit shots - many times, no parallel fairway if you go right or left. This could be a fantastic track, there's definately a great course design, angles - elevation - approaches and even the greens have character.
Many parts of the course are terrible - at least let them actuallly go 'native' and get environmental credit which will help the look, too. Carts are rusted, rattle - no gps.
Traps have liitle to no sand - there more like waste areas. Greens are the best part of the course but signs of neglect, mold.
I think mgmt is 'insane' they do the same thing over and over and expect a different result. Things you can fix with no extra dollars spent (which you also need to do) - everyone needs an attitude adjustment: top down - you're in entertainment = fun + service + quality product
Lost Canyons Sky Course
The course was in good shape. It is super challenging with undulating greens that were very fast and slopey. The tee shot elevations and approach shot elevations played tough and very fun. I would recommend this course to any golfer looking for great views of large canyon walls and rolling mountains. Great course and great value for the money.
Need to control slow players
I understand this course, once the most precious course in the region, now has financial difficulty, and try to minimize their expenses: closed down one course, no more GPS, no soda cart around, no yardage stakes on fairway, AND no marshal around at all.
That is how a group of 4, combination of 2 old men and 2 old women played extremely slow without any speed control by marshal. Actually they should not play in this kind difficult course with their skill, in my opinion. The following group behind of them also played somewhat slow, but I could not blame them because their play was also delayed by group ahead.
Just wish someone come out to make extremely slow players sped up.
It's needs work
The place needs work and as far as the course it could be better for what I paid for.
Outstanding bargain
Super course condition considering water situation and what they charged Definitely a course to play. Pete dye course generally stink. This does not.
Challenging coure...great value...super service!
I played the course for the first time while on business in the area. A challenging course with fast pace of play. Staff is excellent.
Still Hanging On
Lost Canyons is not what it used to be. But these days, what courses are? Pros: played yesterday and there was literally 12 people playing golf in the entire course at 9am. It was like I rented a golf course for me and my buddy. Without even trying, played in 3 hours and we are no great golfers. Staff was super friendly. Cons: I think it's about $10 overpriced but can understand they have to charge in order to keep the lights on. Greens were in okay shape not great as I have read. Fairways had grass which is better than most city courses. Hey there's a drought so I get it.
Will definitely play again. Especially if there's NO one else out there like this time.
extremely pleased
first time playing this course. from the start, the staff was very friendly and promptly got us onto the course. the property surrounding the course is, in my view, very beautiful. there are multiple tee boxes to meet any level of player. we chose to play from the silver tees, which is one behind the whites. there are two more boxes behind the silvers for those pros out there. you have to have some level of accuracy with your shots. the fairways are in decent shape. I usually play in the valley and the conditions at this course are better than most of the city courses I usually play at. the greens are in excellent conditions. they are very soft and manicured to perfection, not easy by any means, but definitely in great shape. I had a great experience playing this course. It is definitely my new favorite. I am looking forward to my next round. I would advise all to get a little practice in, before challenging this course. Best of all, the prices are unbeatable, compared to surrounding golf courses, and definitely a better deal than most city courses in the valley.
Drought wrecking havoc
Clearly the drought has taken its toll, so I understand that. However, there were literally dandelions in the first fairway and it looked like it hadn't been mowed in weeks. As I finished my round I could see that #9 fairway was being mowed, but other wise, none of the course fairways were recently mowed before I teed off at 1pm.
It was very annoying that the pin placements did not match the card. The pin placements were listed as #5 on the card but they were random on the course. Not good since it was my first time playing there.
Stunning views and landscape. Watch out for rattle snakes, saw one on 17 in the bushes.... Needless to say, I took a drop instead of chipping out.....
Lost canyons
You want the truth about your golf game ? Can you handle the truth about your golf game? A great course will not be fooled.. This is a beautiful and great course.
Lost Canyons
It demands and rewards an attentive golfer, lots of twists and turns and rough, not to mention some elevation changes. All yield a most impressive game; a testament to the skills of the course designer.
This course tuned up my game.-in ways I didn't anticipate... and I really enjoyed it.
Poor management
This course is dying, greens are 1/3 dead.
Have not seen any improvement over last few years, just getting worse every time I visit this course.
Too bad to see nice course go down like this.
This course is a gem
I read some of the latest reviews and was expecting a to walk into a disaster. This has been one of my favorite courses to play since moving to LA 8 years ago. I haven't played out there in a year or two so I was upset to see the Shadow course had been shut down. Thankfully, the Sky course is still up and running.
While there are some issues with the fairway grass, the course is in the desert for all intents and purposes and we are in a record drought. One thing is for certain, NOTHING beats the scenery here. We saw about 12 different forms of wildlife running and flying around and looking up at the massive mountains that surround the course make you realize how small we are. I love this place and can't wait to go back. Definitely not waiting another year this time!
Drought Affecting Play Conditions...
Clubhouse, staff and food were all great, but the fairways were so dried out and hard that it was like playing in a parking lot. The greens were in good shape, but the fairways were like hitting off hardpan in a pasture. Hopefully the course will not be totally lost as the drought continues, because it could become not just "Lost Canyons", but more like "Lost Course"!
design
Nice design encorporating the natural beautiful setting but due to the California daughter the course was in bad shape.
