Nice day at San Geronimo
We played in afternoon and had no one in front of us. We got done in about 3 3/4 hours.
Have seen course in better shape
Condition of course was somewhat disappointing. Seemed that there was orange cones and fencing on number of holes and fairways were extremely dry compared to other courses in the area.
Not ready for Prime Time
San G is in a beautiful location, far away from the maddening crowd, however it isn't in very good shape. Probably lack of water
Contributes to the hard fairways, sketchy grass in lots of places, and hard tee boxes but still at $45 (senior rate) it's just not worth the money, especially if you drive from an hour + away. The greens looked decent but we're pretty slow, even when it looked fast. A big disappointment in the speed of the greens.
The staff has always had an elitist attitude which doesn't make you feel welcome and ready to play golf. Add to that they don't have a driving range! Not worth it!
Beautiful course surroundings, average course conditions
Course layout plays long, keep that in mind when hitting from the tips. Setting and surroundings are beautiful: protected little microcosm of weather in the valley too, not much wind, lots of sun exposure. Course conditions are average at best, especially for what you're paying. No driving range (big disappointment for an $80+ round and hitting driver off the 1st tee - so much for warming up.) Suggestion to mgmt., install one of those net-like ranges nearby for warm up - you have the real estate to do so, better than nothing. Fairways were a big let down, very dry, pockets of dirt, divots, bumps, and gravel noticed. Greens in good shape, but played fast (again, lots of sun exposure for the later-in-the-morning, mid-day rounds, especially during warmer seasons). Water is in play somewhat, but mostly avoidable. Course plays well for the L-to-R, R-toL open-hitter. Pace of play was slow (expect that on weekends).
Fun interesting course
Played with my son after getting a great deal on golf now. We played for $35 (17.50 each) with a cart. For that price it was a great deal. The course is average distance with a pretty good design. It has a variety of holes with doglegs left and right. The greens were in excellent condition, the fairways in good condition and the bunkers fair. I really liked the design because every hole was unique. One driveable par 4, a couple of 400 plus par 4's and the rest in the 360 yard range from the blue tees. The par 3's also varied in length and I liked all of them. The course required accuracy but was very fair. There was one tee back from that and a couple of shorter tees. The clubhouse is old and dated but the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. For $40 and below on weekdays I would highly recommend it.
Great track
Played here yesterday with a couple of buddies - we are varying skill levels (one guy is basically scratch, I'm a 9 the other guy about a 18). Scratch guy played from the tips, we played from the blues (20 guy bombs it off the tee). Front 9 is flat and pretty easy. A few odd twists and turns with some trees, but basically standard golf. Back 9 is much more challenging with some cool elevated tee boxes and blind tee shots. Some long par 3s, and plenty of dog-leg lefts, and even some water on a few holes. Very pretty course.
One bit of local knowledge - on every hole (except par 3s) there are two red trees (short-ish japanese maples) planted on either side of the fairway which are at 150 yards out. This gives you a much better sense of the hole than a barber pole and i wish more courses would do this.
As a warning, the advertised rate on GolfNow does *not* include the cart fee, so we were surprised with an extra $10/each on the already somewhat steep green fees. First course I've been to that has this issue and GolfNow/the course should resolve this.
Great Day
The course is in great shape, especially the greens. Pace of play was right on.
Food options were limited, both on course and especially in the club house.
Nice Golf Course!
I enjoyed my round at San Geronimo. Course conditions were good; pace of play was excellent; the course layout was mostly good except for one hole with a blind tee shot. You'll want to play this course a few times to get local knowledge of how to play some of the holes. I live in the East Bay. So, getting to this course was very difficult, especially during the weekday with commute traffic. For the fees I paid and the distance I drove to get there, this is not a course I would frequent often. Overall value is just average based upon my situation. I could be better for those living closer.
Challenging holes and risk reward
Course in above average shape. We were welcomed at the desk and also by a friendly starter. Finished in just over 4 hours, but teed off at 2pm and only twosomes in front of us. Water hazards on 6 holes - 3 requiring an approach over water. All Iin all, SG was an enjoyable afternoon and a great value.
Decent Course, Marin Prices
This is a fun course. It's pretty well maintained and has plenty of challenge for all types. The first few holes are kinda cookie cutter, but the rest of the layout makes up for it. I knocked down a star because it's usually a bit overpriced, no driving range to warm up, and the practice green is minimal. I only book here when I get a deal. I think they try to charge more simply because it's in Marin County and certainly not because the course or the facilities are worth it.
Great Course with Great Views
I've been playing this course for the last 15 years. It was never a "regular" course for me since I live in SF and have Harding Park to play but I'd play San Geronimo about 5 times a year. The front 9 is a great start of holes. Its very forgiving with wide open fairways. You can hit wayward drives and still be able to save par. Hole #9 is kind of a weird hole with the green suddenly on top of a hill. Probably would be better if it was just flat or just elevated a bit.
The back 9 is where the fun starts and is a complete polar opposite of the front 9 you've just played. The difficulty gets kicked up about 10 notches. I'm usually a pretty consistently average player thats shoots in the high 70s to low 80s. The last time I played this course, I shot an even par in the front and 12 over in the back. This is the only course that has that kind of effect on my game. The back is just that hard but playable.
Overall, its a great place to play. I never had extremely long rounds. Usually in that 4 hour range. The course has some really nice holes while some are okay. When its warm around the Bay Area, it can get pretty hot here so it would be nice to have a cart service. It was around 80+ degrees the last time I played and could have used a bunch of refreshments mid round.
It's a beautiful location with great views.
We could not take the carts on the course and had to stay on the cart path which was very tiring to walk back and forth. It would have been better to know in advance and walk the course.
Most unfriendly staff
Went to play San Geronimo today Feb 12th 2016. When we first checked in counter person tried to charge us double agreed upon rate. then he was totally snarly to myself and my guests. At the turn no one to help us with food purchases all condiments were dried up and stale. After the round front desk staff totally ignored us as they were on their computer. we stood there no exaggeration five minutes with no acknowledgement.. course was in good shape but all staff was totally rude. Would not consider returning.
Slow play because of cart path only
Took over 5 hours to play since it was cart path only so lots of walking involved. Additionally it hadn't been mowed recently so finding balls was hard if you were not in the middle of the fairway. Great play to play when the carts are able to get off the paths.
Horrible
Don't waste your time or money on this course during winter Seasons. Very poor drainage through out the course. There are much better courses in Marin and Sonoma where drainage is excellent and ground conditions are much better.
Advertised rate different
Once again, I get to the course and they don't honor the booked online rate. I showed them the email from your website to no avail. 2nd time this has happened using your website
Fun Day in the Rain
Booked a foursome online a week in advance and ended up playing in some pretty terrible weather conditions. It was pretty cold outside and raining throughout the entire round, but it was sort of cathartic because we were the only ones on the course. The greens were soft as was expected and there was a lot of mud in the fairways, but the course played well given the conditions.
After the front nine, my group was starting to run out of gas and our extremities were starting to get numb, so we stopped into the club house for about 45 minutes. We sat down next to the fireplace and ordered coffee and lunch and I can honestly say that the burger was one of the best burgers I've had in recent memory. Very impressed!
We hopped on the back nine and finished the round in great time. Overall a great experience and would recommend SG to anyone looking to play in the north bay area.
It's close for Marinites
Caught a good Sunday afternoon, played in 4 1/2 hours. Can be very slow. Greens were good. Fairways so bare spotted my group had a 6 inch bump rule. If they had more water it would be a phenomenal course.
nice coarse
play was very slow foursome ahead of our group was ballhawking and goofing off it shouldn't take 5 hrs to play a round of golf at this course other than that nice layout in a nice setting
