What happened to this gem!?
I remember growing up playing this course but it is not what it used to be. Take the fires and drought out of the equation cause that isn't there fault but what they have done to it has ruined this course. The driving range is covered with old astro turf from football fields pieced together like a puzzle. You can see the the old yardage lines and everything it looks so terrible! They even put the astro turf where people walk to the tee boxes and where the golf carts come off the cart path and onto the grass, it was such an eye sore. Most of the tee boxes were very uneven and some looked they hadn't been mowed in a month. We played on a Saturday so you would think there would be a refreshment cart but there wasn't one. Its such a shame at how bad this place has gotten cause it used to be amazing yet they still charge top dollar, I wouldn't pay more then $15 dollars to play here. Until they make some serious changes I don't think this course will make it much longer, but I hope they do make changes so it doesn't go out of business. With all that being said there greens were great I will give them that . I wouldn't recommend playing here to a friend, this course is not a country club as advertised.
Played mid January and the course is in good shape. Greens are really smooth and kind of fast(10-10.5 maybe). Fairways are getting there but not bad , just real bumpy in spots. Sand traps have that course sand in them but that’s expected due to the high wind that frequent there. Staff is very friendly and efficient. Nice driving range and putting green. Overall a course I would recommend!
Up and coming.
The course is up and coming. The greens were fast and firm. It is looking great.
Sand Canyon CC improving
First time on the course since the new ownership. I think the improvements that have already been done and those that are currently underway are a positive. The greens were firm and fast (good/excellent condition), the fairways are fair/good (a bit patchy because of new growth), tee boxes are poor/fair (could stand some leveling and needed mowing). After round amenities are very basic, but I suspect this will change as the amount of play picks up. The clubhouse facility is still one of the nicest in the valley!
Sand Canyon End of 2017 Update
Happy that the courses are getting better every time I visit. They still need to water the WHOLE COURSE MORE. Fairways are still a bit thin, greens were rock hard because of windy conditions. The bunkers need new sand in them as they are basically dirt, (I was only in 1 this day). Hot deal of $25 was worth it...not $70 as listed, maybe would pay up to $45 for Valley/Desert. Mountain 9 was the last to open, I bet it's really not ready. Not cart girl or ambassadors seen at all (11am tee time). The course is coming along which is great to see!
Impressive course and amazing layout
The course had plush fairways and really nice greens. Best course WeHa e played in Cali so far and we are a dozen deep at this point. Will return very pleased. Challenging and the views are amazing!
New owners are making a serious effort to make this a incredible golf course...Kudos!
The course has come leaps and bounds since I played in July,so many things to improve the way the course looks and plays.BUT they definitely overbook it and the round is painstakingly slow,I seriously had a 6some with two 4somes in front of them and every hole was waiting on the tee box for 5minutes between every shot, almost a 6 hour round on a Friday at 11:00.So that kinda kills it for me regardless of the beauty and redoing the lakes and such.
Great course
I love this course. fairways and green are good. I love the work they are doing on the course, the only thing is the bunkers are not the best.
Had a nice day of golf!
The new owners have done a really nice remodel. I like the artificial grass strips that you take from the cart path to the fairways. The rock river beds along the sides of some fairways have beautiful rock retaining walls. They will be pretty to see in winter after it rains. It was a bit cool and even though windy in the area, the course was kind of protected by the mountains and not much wind. It was the first weekday after a holiday weekend so we did to wait on any holes. Fairways and greens were nice, the grass in the forward tee's and in some fairway areas was a little tall but not bad. I like the ceramic pots on every tee for broken tee's (or cigarette butts?) Nice idea. Bathroom were clean and well stocked. We played the Desert and Valley courses. The Desert Course had many rock river areas that you can not always see as you approach them, which is why I say it was moderately difficulty. Would be nice to have some more info in maps or on the score card. It would be easy to lose more balls with long shots into the river beds. Also can't go looking for your ball too much in the out of bounds areas as there are rattle snakes. We will be back!
Terrible
tee time is 12:30
start 13:00
many people play golf...
every hole wait 5~10 minutes,
#6 hole cart did'nt work
it worth $20 per #18 hole
Sand Canyon is back!
The course is almost back to the excellent condition it was always in before the drought. It won’t be long until it is, as there are many improvements on-going. The 27-hole lay-out is awesome! I only gave 4-stars for the conditions because the tee boxes need to be mowed, but maybe there is a reason they for the longer length. The staff is welcoming and friendly. I play with a regular group of retirees who are excited that Santa Clarita again has a public country club level course to play at, since the other country clubs in Santa Clarita are private. If you haven’t gone there because of some of the older views, ignore them. The course is in great shape now!
Really coming along!
we heard a lot about Sand Canyon since it changed owners and name...frankly, the reviews were all over the place, from “fantastic” to “avoid at all costs...”. We found a 50 a man Sunday rate, so my regular foursome snagged it. We are avid players who play all over SoCal, and we are muni players...the handicaps range from 8 to 24, and two play from Blues and 2 play from Whites...so what I am trying to say is that we are players...we know golf...so here is the review: the layout and views are nothing short of spectacular! Almost every hole is stunning! The comditions range from good to borderline poor in spots, but they are really trying. We played winter rules so all was well...the greens were slow but good, wih the exception of a par three on the back side with a horrendous “auto 2 putt” temp...also we experienced something we have never seen - on an otherwise beautiful hole and green, there were three foot high foot wide piles of sand...very odd...now for the add ons - breakfast was solid, if not fancy...best part was Bridgette, who was a true delight working counter...the starter was terrific, and the pro shop is first class...didn’t use or even see the range, and the putting green was closed. Clubhouse is spectacular and opulent. Appeared to be a very nice bar and grill upstairs, but was not open to service our 10:30 tee time.
So what’s the verdict? Play this course and keep an open mind...they had a devastating fire a couple of years back, and the drought hurt. Is it pristine and perfect? No. Is it a spectacular venue for golf? Yes! Is it worth 50 bucks? Without question. Is it worth 100? No, not yet. So find a deal and drink it all in!
Had a fun round on Friday afternoon
The conditions were fair, but some greens are in repair. The course offers excellent challenge. Most drives are a practice in target golf. There a variety of different size and sloped greens. The bunkers were firm though. Our threesome played a decent pace. We never caught the group in front nor were we ever caught by the group behind. If you are okay with 90 degree weather on a weekday, 1 pm is the time to go.
A lot of work has/is being put in to course
It's not yet at level of Robinson Ranch in its prime but it's getting there. Course is very playable with fairways filling in and most greens roll true. Still some thin spots on a few fairways. Owner and pro are very passionate about their course. To think they had to overcome the worst trifecta a course could face, drought then fire then flooding, and still have a playable course is pretty amazing. This course will just get better and better as time goes on. Will definitely be back.
