Eclipse Round - Course is worth the drive from Chicago
Simply put I love this place. Country Club atmosphere with no pretense. $22 incl fees with cart hot deal on a Monday. A complete no brainer! Play it! We were virtually the only ones on the golf course for the Eclipse. Pontiac Elks is a really fun fairly well conditioned golf course. Some brown out conditions in the fairways this year, traps are mainly dirt however the greens were in fantastic shape with good speed and a nice smooth roll to them. Grass range, locker room with great showers and great prices on beverages....Elks hospitality. The halfway house wasn't open (the course doesn't return after the 9th) but with the extremely light Monday tee sheet who cares! (Scroll down to my previous review of this course for more info). 4.5 stars the only downgrades are the traps and some areas of brown patchy fairways. Awesome value. Make the day of it...take part of Historic Old 66 to get there.
(Another secret - another track just north of Pontiac is Wolf Creek GC.....I stopped in there on the way and it appears to be in even better condition than Pontiac Elks.....another course worth the drive to play and a really good value...look for hot deals).
All in all it was pretty amazing day. Shortly after 11am we started the front nine at Pontiac Elks Country Club with an intermittent light drizzle and really muggy 85 degree conditions. At the 5th green it began to rain with conviction so we then took cover for about 10 minutes under a tree near the 6th tee box. The skies then started to clear and by the time we were at the 7th green the effects of our 88pct partial eclipse were becoming evident. The temperature dropped about 10 degrees a cooler light wind started to blow with unpredictability. We made the turn and arriving at the10th tee it was really dusky and tough to see our tee shots finish caused by an eerie twilight. This was further enhanced by crickets chirping and birds making weird calls along the Vermillon River. It was still cooler on the 11th and 12th holes featuring several hawks flying around in the sky erratically. Reaching the 13th green the temperature had almost rebounded up to the same hot muggy conditions we began the round with. It was summer again. A total eclipse of the fun.
To many leaves
To my leaves made it hard to find the ball..map on scorecard was difficult to follow.. Course otherwise was very challenging and in great shape.
Unhappy
The courses rough was extremely long and the staff was very unfriendly they were prepping for a golf outing the next day and people were jumping holes all over the place and they didn’t care
Excellent course, excellent shape, and great bar!
The course is in excellent shape. It's a challenging course, especially the first five holes. Long par threes (except 1). Great layout. Staff was good. Nancy in the clubhouse is a fantastic bartender! Come try it! You will love it!
First time playing this course in a couple yrs and as always was very happy with the course its condition and the staff.
Disappointed with course condition.
Have played this course numerous times over the last fifteen years or so. This is the poorest overall condition I have seen it in. The rough had.not been mowed, the traps had weeds growing in them, many trees are dead, etc. It used to be the only issue was hard greens that wouldn't hold. Not so now.
Really enjoy golfing here and play it as often as we can
course was in fair shape. I think it was due to too much rain earlier in summer and no rain later in summer. played here many times course is always in good shape. staff at course are very nice every time I have been there.
New management made HUGE improvements!
Golf course has changed a lot under the new management. It is night and day from previous management. Highly recommend this golf course. Great lay out with a very friendly staff.
Tight
Short, tight course but rough makes it hard to score. I would play again.
Average but worse than I remember
It was unfortunate to see such a great course in poor condition. The layout is great, plays long, and normally a nice challenge. The course has really gone downhill with management turnover as most fairways and greens were very dirty and full of chunks and divots. There were no markers on any of the fairways and hardly identifiable markings on path for distances. However, given the busy weekend traffic, pace of play wasn’t too bad. In all, good for the money but not what it used to be.
Saturday $10 Hot Deal
See my previous review of Pontiac Elks. Awesome place and has a great vibe. The greens were aerated recently (medium cores and not sanded) but still rolling okay...a tad bumpy but a $10 hot deal was a steal. Plus no one on the course practically. Played in 220. Simply awesome and fun to get a groove going. Look forward to playing there in 2018 a few more times....well worth the drive. A few of the regulars told me that that folks at Wolf Creek have taken over the maintenance of the course and that bodes well for quick fast greens because Wolf Creek takes care of their greensites very very well. Go play this place!!
