Cheval Golf and Athletic Club
About
Designed by Steve Smyers, Cheval Golf and Athletic Club's (previously known as Cheval Country Club) mature and meticulously maintained course meanders through 860 acres of elegantly designed development property. Cypress trees abound on this course along with native Florida wildlife including deer, alligators, otters, eagles, wading birds and more. Cheval is one of the area's most prestigious semi-private clubs and offers 18 holes of championship golf. Precise shot placement is required to avoid the 108 bunkers and water hazards that lurk on every hole. A large practice facility includes target greens, distance markings, a practice greens-side bunker, a practice fairway bunker, large putting green and separate pitching green.

Not Worth It
Cheval is nowhere near its price. Given my friends and I live 15 minutes away we had to try it out, but I have never been more disappointed playing in Tampa. We paid $120 and experienced the following:
-Slow play (ended 55 minutes behind pace after the starter bragged about how many groups they got out that morning)
-No cart girl until #9 and only saw her once
-A cart that lost charge on #7 so we had to walk the last three holes. Not something you can always control, but the shop had zero empathy. No apologies and didn’t even have a cart ready at the turn. Waited a few minutes and snagged one from a group that finished 18.
-Asked for range balls twice in the pro shop prior to the round and was told to just go to the range. Range had no balls laid out and we couldn’t figure out where to ask for them, so we just went to #1.
For any average $30-45 course I wouldn’t be upset, but given we paid $120, I could not be more disappointed. Although the fairways and greens were decent, I certainly wasn’t blown away by the course. If you’re considering playing a nice course in Tampa, I’d suggest the following over Cheval:
-Fox Hollow
-Westchase
-TPC Tampa
-Mangrove Bay (A municipal with better greens than Cheval)
Challenging layout, professional staff
Course requires managing well. A good challenge. I expect better maintenance around the greens from this course. I'll be back!
Great layout,
There are some very tuff holes, yet very playable. Around the greens and the tee boxes, it's a bit rough right now, but they are working on improving them. Fairways are in good condition. Requires good course management.
Definitely looking forward to playing there again. Very friendly staff also.
Cheval had us there 5 plus hours
Long day at Cheval.
Good thing we had nothing else to do today because we spent a greater part of our day out on the links at Cheval. Really helped when our twosome was joined by a 3rd on the 3rd hole because it became apparent we were in for a long slow death march on a nice day today while playing golf! Good thing on hole 16 a ranger showed up so we were able to play the last 3 holes in regulation time. Course was nice shape as always, fun layout, enjoyed the course even more than normal by at least an hour! My partner and I enjoy playing Cheval, to bad they don't have enough workers to encourage slow groups to pick up the pace just a bit to finish in 4.25hrs max.
Wil come back again and take our chances the march will pick up the pace next time. That will provide time to spend some $$ at the 19th hole before heading home.
Ted
Great course, punishing on errant shots but a very nice layout
Good course for lower handicap players
Lots of challenges on this course with plenty of water and very limited landing areas short off most tees. Hit it straight and watch out for the 18th it doesn’t fit this course if you ask me a bit quirky.
Great place
This is a great course… Lots of winding holes with beautiful views and tests for golfers of all skill levels… You will see deer ,Exotic birds and alligators And probably somebody shaking his fist at a missed putt Ha Ha Ha. This track is a hidden Tampa gem I recommend you give it a play.
Great Layout
Awesome course great greens . Pricey however it’s a prestige golf course
