Carmel Mtn Ranch
Great layout through neighborhoods. No one hole is next to each other. Good greens with lots of undulations.
6/15/16
Course was very crowded. Had to wait at every hole. Then felt like I had to play fast to stay ahead of group behind me
beautiful nicely layed out course
Staff was great very nice greeting and start. It was nice to be back in San Diego where I grew up. The course was laid out very nicely and was challenging enough but was just right for a higher handicapper. My only complaint was that there weren't enough signs to follow, whole to whole because the course winds around through the housing development. It was the first time I played the course and had to ask direction on more then one occasion. I also had individuals ask directions more then once. other then that it was a very pleasant day and great pace to play a fun course.
6 Hour Round
Played on a Saturday around noon. 3 groups of Koreans were holding up the entire course. Took almost 6 hours to play, made the round extremely not fun. Course was in good condition. Greens have some crazy slopes. Some greens it was impossible to chip it close to the hole.
CMR
Course was in great shape. The greens were the best I have seen them. Very fast above the hole but fun.
Carmel Mountain Work in Progress
interesting course layout that requires some direct experience or some help from someone with the keys to avoiding major issues and to optimize opportunities.
Bunkers are very inconsistent and newly installed waste areas off the fairways are in need of some upgrading to make them more user friendly for the average golfer.
Greens were a challenge for a first timer. Overall, when the fairway/bunker improvements are complete, the golf experience should be improved
excellent
well , for me is it the best challenge course golf , because each hold is complete different that is very important for me.
Fun course
Had a good day playing Carmel Mountain. The course was wide open and a good time
Pleasant surprise
For some reason, I had dismissed this course after playing a couple of tournaments here in the 90s. Not sure why. After coming back this morning, CMR is back on the list.
Tough course winding through housing area, but not overly tight. Significant elevation changes make the 6500 yard course much longer than you'd expect. Especially when two Par 3s require 240-260 yard shots - ouch.
Tees, fairways, greens in excellent condition. They are turning significant parts of the way off rough into bare areas to reduce watering. You have to be pretty wild to get there.
I look forward to returning.
landscaping
landscape construction was underway to make the course more water friendly on some holes, but was not to much trouble.
Not to bad
The lay out its great and greens still good. This course used to be so green and beautiful. Now you see too much brown on the course and some fairways are becoming hard like #17 hole.
Believe the suggested tees
On first looking at the score card, one tends to look at the yardage. In this case, look at the recommended tees by handicap rating. They are a true indicator of course difficulty.
The course features several elevation changes, well protected greens, some interesting sloping fairways and greens that are both well maintained and extremely challenging. Found the greens to run well until a marshall suggested they were a bit shaggy. Sure enough, on the next green, putts fell well short. Go figure. Did not notice any other shaggy greens.
Some blind shots that will play well the second time around.
Great scenery throughout.
Great value and definitely a keeper.
great golf
Great course with great staff and amenities good value for the price
Plenty of elevation changes and greens roll true.
Will definitely play on a regular basis.
Advice for Visitors
I visited the San Diego area to get a break from the Pacific NW rain (previous 30 straight days) and lucked out with near perfect golf weather for my 6 days here.
The course choices I made were based upon recent (December 2015) reviews on Golf Now, however without exception all reviews included the qualifier "considering the drought" or words to that effect. For those of you planning a trip here I want to provide reviews without that disclaimer so you get an appraisal relative to what your used to in non-drought stricken areas.
The conditions at CMR were poor through the green and terrible elsewhere in play. The greens were and nice fast and fairly true, however every green had unplayable areas not marked as they should have been. The numerous areas of unfair lies through the green were not marked as ground under repair. The tee boxes were bad to awful.
In addition to CMR I played Torrrey Pines South, Madera, Salt Creek, Rancho Bernardo Inn, and Coronado. These were the 6 best rated courses who also had 18 hole tee times available (11:00 or earlier start) within an hour of Rancho Bernardo where we stayed.
All these courses had poor playing conditions. Maderas was in the best shape but even it was in sad shape. My advice is to try San Diego another year and look elsewhere for the next year or so.
Loved the course
Not a real long course but tricky. Helped that I played with a local. Staff very friendly, I'm going to play it again had fun the first time.
Interesting course with challenging holes
This course has interesting holes that require t-shots placed correctly, many times to blind landing areas. Several birdie opportunities. Greens fair, but challenging. This appears to have once been a very upscale course that has not had the "love" it deserves in recent years. Fairways a little sparse in areas, little, if any rough. Desert and waste areas off fairway. Regardless, it is an enjoyable experience and an excellent value. I would certainly play again.
Tricky course
For beginner it is too difficult to play and to easy to access to every hole.
Amazing!
This course has an amazing layout and is in top notch shape! The fairways are plush and very articulate. Even the bunkers are beautiful! No teebox here is the same. You drive through the beautiful neighborhood of Carmel Mountian Ranch on a quest to tee it high and let it fly! Every hole has an amazing view. I highly recommend this course to any one who loves the game and experience it brings.
Staff was very friendly and extra helpful as well!
5 Stars all around!
