Enjoyable course on a muggy day
Was paired up with another single this morning, and had a very enjoyable experience. Humidity got to me over the last few holes, but the course has a lot of positive traits going for it:
- Very friendly staff
- Beautiful and challenging layout, with 5 different tee boxes for golfers of all ages and abilities
- Greens were in very good shape, and very puttable. Fairways were also in great shape, as well.
- Course is not long, but accuracy on many holes is at a premium. The course also will reward you for hitting a good shot at the right times.
- Pace of play was 3.5 hours, excellent when considering the weather.
Couple of negatives:
- Didn't look like pin placements were changed for a few days, as the edges were frayed and in rough shape
- Certain areas for shots that were slightly off were very penal, and the bunkers were hardpan with no sand in them.
- Halfway food and drinks didn't have much to offer.
Would love to play this course in the spring or in the fall, when it isn't 92 and muggy - but I enjoyed this course a lot, and would recommend this to anyone looking for courses to play in the area.
Awesome course
This is a great course as are all the Arthur Hills courses that I have played. A lot of variety of holes.
GREAT Spot
The course is in great shape in a BEAUTIFUL location. Plenty of photo spots and wildlife to be seen. The old "keep it in the fairway" saying is true here, the rough is long and deep. Its a great spot that I will definitely return to!
This course is back to how it was from the start
Wonderful golf course hadn’t played it for a few years but was very impressed even with all the rain they had everybody we saw there was very welcoming and friendly we live in Kentucky and are definitely going back
GMierz
Love the course layout and scenery. The only negative response was to the depth of the rough. The first two cuts were fine but the third was 10”+. There was no chance of finding you ball in that stuff.
Great course
Visiting from out of town and only got to play a couple courses in the area. Was really glad I chose this one as one of them. It’s as difficult as advertised, but more interesting than most courses I have played. Signature hole is great, and having the river running along the majority of holes creates both a challenge and some great views.
French Broad excites us
What a great layout - several holes depart the mainland for separate islands in the middle of the French Broad River. Wish they would cut the rough around the greens a bit shorter, but if my game were better ...... ? Anyway, don't miss the opportunity to play this great gem!
Great course layout and friendly staff
A very fun course, especially the “island” holes in the middle of the French Broad River. Very clever design work! Greens in great shape, but I wish they would cut the rough a bit shorter, especially around the greens. Nonetheless, this is a terrific track and we WILL be back!
Just a great overall course
Everything is great about this course. Great layout, great fairways, greens are typically slower here but they’re in great condition. Best layout around.
Great layout, poor maintenance
I have been playing this course since it opened and love the layout. Unfortunately the new owners don’t seem to want to put the effort in to keep the maintenance up. We play there at least once a month and have seen a steady decline in the conditions since the change in ownership, Cups don’t get moved, we play on Monday’s and it is very obvious the cup hasn’t been moved in several days. Tee boxes are shaggy, as are the fairways and greens, you can lose your ball in the first cut of rough and forget finding it in the jungle called the second cut. Grass bunkers are impossible because of the lack of cutting and sand bunkers need to just be removed since there’s not enough sand in them to play from (sand traps on this course have always been an issue, primarily because of poor initial design and build so that is more on the designer and not the greens keeper).
I love the course and wish it were in decent shape. But it is not, and I personally will not be back until the maintenance improves dramatically.
Great layout with the greens and fairways very nice. The course needs to be cleaned up around the greens and tees. The bunkers are in really bad shape and need attention.
Great views-crazy rough
Really enjoyed this course playing as a tourist from FL. Beautiful views as most holes run along a river with bluffs. Greens not quite recovered from aeration and were slow but rolled fairly true. The rough just off the fairway was fair but if you get 4-5 ft out of the fairway it’s a lost ball. Hit three brand new balls that hit in fairway or in the first cut that should have been less than a foot in the high stuff that I never found. That was most disappointing. Didn’t understand the logic there. Small bucket of range balls were a fair $5. Everyone friendly. Does not go back to clubhouse after nine but has a good food truck at the turn where you can also get beverages. Bring a small cooler though because they give out the non-effective plastic bag and little ice with it. About an hr drive from gatlinberg. But near a brand new Bucees. Overall a great time and would recommend.
