Style Links
Par 32
Length 2153 yards
Slope 84
Rating 29.9

Haystack Mountain Golf Course in Longmont utilizes the natural landscape of the course to provide a fun and challenging nine-hole course. Cottonwoods line some of the fairways and are scattered throughout and the lush greens meld seamlessly with the rolling terrain. The public, executive-length golf course is 2,153 yards from its longest tees with a par of 32. The course features a links-style layout with lovely views of the Flatirons. It is a relatively flat course that is suitable for all levels of golfers. Although it is a shorter course, the interesting layout guarantees a challenge for all. Haystack Mountain Golf Course's par-4 third hold is the signature hole, which features a tricky dogleg left.

Love my home course

I play here about once per week, maybe a little more, as it's the best value for the time and money (and four miles from my house!). I pay $11.50 through golf now (including a small bucket!), and because there are no tee times at this course (first come first served) I don't have the pressure to be there at any certain point. There isn't any sand, and only two water holes, but it can still pose a challenge with it's small greens, and tree lined fairways. It's pretty short too, so you don't use many clubs. I use my Driver on four holes, 3 wood on one, 6i on one, PW, SW, I generally drive the ball 270-300 and hit a PW up to around 150. The scenery is beautiful, and most holes are played along the wildflower lined river. Great value for the money, no questions! Family run operation as well, so really chill.

Family/beginner course, but awesome!

Great value! Only two water hazards and no sand, but a few tough small greens. 9 hole course, but only $5 to add on another 9!

Staff

The people that work at Haystack are simply the BEST. We are very pleased as "rookies" to how friendly and considerate they all have been in making our experience a good one as we endeavor to learn and play they help by making it a comfortable experience. Only thing is there are no port-a-johns out there and that can make for a tough part of the last couple of holes. LOL

What I Want, not What I Need

Being someone who knows how to work with what they have at hand, I have the utmost appreciation for Haystack. This is a course that comes with no pretense, or snobby elitism that one often finds at other courses peopled by mostly rich old white men.
Instead, some very friendly, cool staff greet you respectfully at the counter, send you on your bucolic round, or pour you a beer and catch up on news and niceties.
Because the course is not manicured with a toothbrush and green spray paint, you may find some pine needles on a green, or some deadfall that blew out of the Cottonwood stands along the beautiful waterway. You may also encounter a large friendly king snake on a fairway, and see evidence of elk, deer and bear in places. Even Haystack Mountain is a picturesque sight, especially with the snow covered Divide as its backdrop.
I have been golfing on and off at this course since the 80's, as a permanent rank amateur. It has recovered nicely from the flood damage it incurred, and is beautiful year-round. It is a Hidden Gem, as far as I am concerned. My only regret about giving this review is the props I'm giving the course, and the subsequent crowds that will soon be filling the fairways.

REAL STEAL....FOR AVERAGE GOLFER!!!

I drive 48 miles JUST to play here. THE ABSOLUTE "BEST" deal is "GRILL NITE" Wednesday pm w/music, BUT get there 3pm or so....or else IT IS SUPER SLOW PLAY, all walking.
GRILL NITE/summer only w/music... IS $22, includes meal w/salads, fruit and choice of 5 entree', brat/burger/etc. AND token for driving RANGE, 80 BALLS, -+. + nine holes. The beers on tap, $4-5, MIKE and ANDREA serving them up, don't be in a hurry, this is a quaint, family owned place...SOAK IT UP!

The course is shot a maker's course-- woods, water and longest is 200 yds. No bugs/mosquitos, they spray WEEKLY. Great place for just a beer. IF the 1000's of techies at nearby IBM, etc. ever discover this GEM....it will be ruined or overrun. Come to enjoy the breeze (?) and ambiance and Haystack "Huerfano" Mtn, 3/4 mile north and west of holes #1 and #2.
The drive from my home in Aurora is worth every mile and gallon. I have been golfing for 15 years, and at 69 this course is always a challenge, but have parred every hole, but NOT in one outing, it is that difficult....FOR ME...but so enjoyable 1.5-2 hrs.
IF it is busy your first time, walk it and see and just PRACTISE on the driving range, slow play and beginners can be prevalent, as I never play weekends here. The OWNER is one special LADY, she makes some of the salad on GRILL/GOLF nite!

Niche course, low pressure, fun day

This course is a good place if you want to play a low stress day and don't mind not hitting your driver much. The longest hole is 359 yds with strong dogleg left. The next is 318 yards. You get to work on your middle clubs. Hole #1 is 259 & #2 is 287 fading right. So, if you drive 260-300, you can drive maybe 4 holes...but it's risk/reward. The atmosphere is great in that you can often just pause after a hole, even in the shade (especially after #5)...great spot. You get to hit over water a couple times. You could even do a 4 club bag and work your hybrid, 7, wedge, and putter...if you like that sort of thing. The greens are fairly benign. You can even take novice friends here to learn the game. #7 may be a bit shorter than the 143 yd stated distance. Oh yeah, beware of #9 (over a creek and through vegetation), it's hard to figure out where the tee is set...often short of the blue stated distance. The green fees are $14 during the week ($11 for seniors), $16 on weekends for everyone. $5 for 45 ball bucket, $8 for 90 ball bucket. So, the deals on golfnow.com can be very good.

LOVE THE STACK

What can you say about Haystack? It's the Northern-most course in the Boulder Area. It's beautiful out there. Great scenery, fun 9 hole. Your 2nd 9, if you choose to make the turn is only $5. You can play 18 holes for as low as $13 if you get a good deal. Staff is super friendly, solid driving range, and a good chipping green that most don't know about. These are the types of golf courses we have to support. The Stack is where it's at. Extremely laid back, great for a fun time. If you take golf too seriously stay away, you won't be happy and you'll ruin our good time. The only real issue is how difficult it is to keep the fairways and rough trimmed down. Right on the river, there's so much moisture in the air that everything grows like crazy. If you play earlier in the AM, you can find great conditions if it has just been cut.

Hard times at Haystack

September floods of 2013 did major damage to Haystack. The creek running through the course covered much of it, and unfortunately it has not recovered. The greens are about a 4 on a scale of 10, the grass poorly cut (fairway grass too long and rough ridiculously long.) This course is famous for getting "Haystack-ed": once you play the 3rd hole you are pretty much committed to playing all nine, even when the pace is excruciatingly slow due to the high number of novice players. I love that no carts are allowed, and it's a lovely walk, but it has a long way to go to be a good golf course. Did I mention that it is swarmed with people who can barely if at all play?

great place to play.

I love this old course. I learned to play here and whenever I get a new club I love to see how well it works here. The staff is helpful and friendly. One of my favorite things about Haystack is the driving range. Very well marked distances and tons of green grass.

Great fall conditions at Haystack

Haystack was in great condition when I played there this past weekend. Grass was nice and green and looking great; recovering nicely since the 2013 floods. Staff is always friendly... This is a 9-hole course; couldn't change pace of play to state that. I played at a few courses in northern FL at Thanksgiving time, and their grass was brown.... Go figure.
