Greens, traps, tees.

Course layout is okay, big gap between black and blue tees. 6700 vs 5900. Yea, I get the altitude and as a single digit handicap 6700 really is okay for me but my buddy struggled. The big issue is the greens. When wee played they were in full bloom and really hard, but not fast. Whoever laid them out must have thought two tere greens with false fronts, backs, and elephants buried underneath for humps would be a good idea. Not so much. Clown golf. Not worth the late hit price of $99. Won't be back. I'll stick to my country club where greens are fair and fast and there's actual sand in the bunkers.

Magnificent layout

Super layout amongst a Californian pine forest. Tight at times and 8000ft of altitude plays a defining role in club selection. Only marked it down due to the greens having been cored recently but generally the course played well. Fabulous finishing quartet of holes, amongst the best I have played on any of the 4 continents I have played. Ask for Iain, a fellow Scot who has made a great switch to Mammoth Lakes from Scotland and encompasses the best of U.S. customer service with Scottish golfing knowledge and humour.

fun track

Fun course in a beautiful place. This course is not as narrow as staff earn about. Don't be afraid to pull out the driver.

A shining star

Played in four hours on a Thursday morning. The course has character and sufficient defenses to challenge low handicappers. On the short side - 6400 from the blues and 6700 from the tips - couple that with thin mountain air and long hitters will salivate. But beware, this course requires precision off the tee. If you insist on hitting a driver or even a three wood off the tee you must be able to shape the ball. Don't let your concentration lapse as you take in the incredible scenery. To score low, you will have to accurately place your approach shots on multi-tiered and heavily contoured greens. This track is loaded with mountain charm. Oh - and please don't feed the Bears!

Beautiful course

Along with Snowcreek, Mammoth Lakes has two of the most beautiful courses anywhere! Sierra Star winds through the forest and upscale homes and condos but still has gorgeous views of the Sherwins. It is really a must play and the staff is very friendly. Pace of play came to a halt after eight holes but I was a single so I was able to take some cell phone photos.

Sierra Star Beauty

Our foursome teed off in on a Saturday afternoon. We were pleasantly surprised to see the course was not crowded. We were cheerfully greeted by the staff and played a great round in just under 4 hours. The course was in great shape and the weather was perfect, warm but nicely cooled down with a brief summer afternoon shower. I would definitely recommend this beautiful course.

Amazing

This course is in exceptional shape. We got out for the super twilight rate at 4:20 for $35 and got in 18. Greens, fairways, rough, everything was very well kept. Tough but not over the top. Looking forward to playing this course everytime we come up.

Beautiful Tough course between the Pines

The course is beautiful. The course is narrow and lined with pine trees. The fairways were in excellent condition, the bunkers had fluffy sand, and the 1st cut was dense bluegrass. The greens were in great shape but run slowly. Although the course is near the base of the Mammoth mountain ski runs, the course itself has little elevation change. The fairways are narrow and creeks and ponds protect some greens. A fairway wood or long iron is a smart play on many par 4s- so of course, I pulled out my driver and whacked the ball into the woods. The staff is great. A bear lives on the ninth hole: his den is in the drainage culvert. No joke. A great time and the views are spectacular.

Best in the Sierra

Sierra Star Golf Course is the magnificent! Perched in the high alpine of Mammoth Lakes, CA at 8,000 feet, it's the highest golf course in California. Ball flight is amazing! Stunning views of the Sierra's complimented by immaculate California sun and low humidity. Challenging at times due to the fairways lined with tall pines on either side; the course loves you to hit it straight! Walkable or carts available. Very friendly and accommodating staff at club house with a festive atmosphere at the Chip Shot bar and cafe. Full service pro-shop with lessons, rentals and demos available. Free practice greens, driving net and chipping greens adjacent to parking lot. Long days enable play from as early as 6am until dark around 8pm. Common to see black bears and other wildlife roaming the grounds. Great food & beverage specials as well as $25 for 5 holes after 5pm, 7 days a week. Golf in the morning, hike, bike, fish or check out Yosemite in the afternoon. More info here: http://www.mammothmountain.com/sierrastar

The majestic atmosphere is the best. It makes up for hitting a drive straight and then the undulating fairways pitch it into the trees. This is a beauty but you have to play it multiple times to know how the course plays.
