Salado Del Rio at Fort Sam Houston Golf Course
About
Fort Sam Houston is home to two 18-hole courses, Salado Del Rio and La Lorna. The Salado del Rio course is the more scenic of the two, offering spectacular views of the rustic countryside. The historic facility boasts some famous players including Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer. The layout is also more difficult than the other championship course at the club due to the presence of numerous blind shots and water hazards. Both Fort Sam Houstan golf courses feature tight, tree-lined fairways and greens that are medium in both size and speed. In addition to the two golf courses, Fort Sam Houston also houses extensive practice facilities including a practice chipping green and lighted driving range.

Reviews
Narrow Fairways
The fairways still had a lot of moisture, making it hard to get better distance. The fairways are somewhat narrow making it more challenging but adds to the beauty of the course. The greens were very good and somewhat fast.
Weekend play made it slower than normal and the lack of course marshals did not help.
For the price either of these courses are a great deal.
The course.
It had been raining the past days thus the grass are so thick that if you hit outside the fairways you can hardly find your ball. Some fairways were just mowed and was not blowered thus they are rough.Other than that I love playing this course.
I reserved for Salado but it was closed for maintenance so they let me play the La Loma course. The course was cart path only due to the rains the past days. The course was still in good condition although there were still some areas of some fairways flooded.I definitely recommend this course.
This could be a great course if better kept
This course is much nicer looking and challenging than La Loma, its neighboring course. Pros: really challenging, plays decently long, nicely kept greens, great design, and scenic looking holes. Cons: the fairways are pretty beat up, no GPS on the carts. I would probably play at this course again, but I would rank this course below the other munis in San Antonio. This course would be a last resort.
Great Fun
Course challenging due to design. Lots of fun. Greens in great shape for July. Some work being done but no very distracting. Very helpful and friendly staff.
Shot poorly, but still had a good time.
Fabulous
We had a great time would highly recommended!!
Thank you so much
Had a good time
Husband and I played the course on a day after it had rained the night before and the morning of our afternoon round. The course was still a little wet so it was cart path only for the round, even though there were several who either didn't get that info or just didn't care. The round was enjoyable despite the oppressive humidity of that day. The pro shop staff was super friendly and explained to us that going from #3 to #4 is quite the trip and that we would not be back at the clubhouse until we finished our round. He was not kidding!!! Number four is fairly easy to find if you're a white or blue tee player. For those of us who play gold or red, it was a little more difficult. If you fall into the red or gold group, just keep going down, down, down the hill to the bottom. Once you're down there you'll play 4-8 before you climb back up for #9. After number 9 you will still be way out on the course. From #9 and #10 you will be able to see Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. Quite an experience to hear a 21 gun salute and then TAPS while playing a round. Once you finish #12 you'll cross the street somewhat headed back to the clubhouse.
One thing we would have liked to have was a better idea of where we were hitting. There are several blind holes and having a better understanding of how far the corners were from the tee box or how much was needed to carry certain areas would have been nice. The only place we had an idea was from a sprinkler on the long par 5 #14. The sprinkler just short of our tee shots said "RIP IT!"
Overall we had a great experience and look forward to another round at Ft. Sam.
Slow play
From the time we tee off the group in front of us was talking in the fairway, on the greens and teeboxs. No respect for others. This isn’t the first time playing this course. It took almost 5 hrs to play. Wasn’t to happy about the situation.
6.5 hours to finish 18
The golf course closed Salado on Monday without notice, forcing everyone onto Laredo. My tee time through Golf Now was for 8:33 AM, finally tee’d off at 9:15. Pace was ridiculously slow. Finished 18 in 6.5 hours! Thursday of the same week, they closed Laredo for a junior tournament without any notice. Rate of play was horrible with many novice golfers and no staff on the course! I’ll pay more to golf somewhere else.
Crusty Greens
The greens were aerated, sanded and, evidently, left to bake w/o any water. They were roughly as firm as the parking lost though quite a bit bumpier.
The layout is nice enough and the overall condition about what you'd expect.
Nice folks in the pro shop and excellent pace of play (4 hours, 5 minutes on a Saturday)
Where am I??
Course layout was horrible. Had no idea which hole I was playing or which course I was on. Couldn’t find the 15th hole so we just called it a day and drove back to the clubhouse. Fairways and greens were ok.
I enjoy the courses at Fort Sam
Just know that you can get bumped for a military player.
We booked 3 slots at noon. Somehow another 2 some was booked and one of players was going to get bumped as the other 2 players were soldiers.. Then they said we could move to 12:33. Which was fine with us, but luckily the 2 some ended up running late and we went off at our scheduled time. We were told that it was a military installation and soldiers had priority. Which I am okay with, just know the risk going in.
Blind shots.
Great track, but a lot of blind shots. Unless you have played this course, you will be guessing on shots until back nine.
Truly enjoyed
First time playing this course & will play it many more. Thanks Golfnow:)))
Print GolfNow confirmation!
Front desk was annoyed that a golfnow printout was not provided even though I had the confirmation on my phone through the golfnow app. They should focus more on customer service if they offer external booking options and wish to keep those new customers.
