Traps need seasonal attention
I know this is a city course, and a private management company that is doing very well. I noticed a dozen people picking up range balls that we're imbedded I’d like to think they were the operator of range staff and not city employees?
It would be nice to see half of that labor directed at improving traps desperately needing water drainage and some evidence of equipment which is attempting to improve some poorly maintained traps. It seems only the private clubs can afford to invest in this seasonal and ideally daily effort to run an ATV around them.
I appreciate the efforts Portland parks has steadily improved problem areas needing better drainage and how tricky that balance of projects vs. daily maintenance must be in the years I’ve been playing here. The grounds people are hard working and always very considerate, could they find a youth to volunteer to run an ATV around a side of the tracks traps for a few rounds of golf.? I imagine it’s complicated to get a volunteer to do something like this?
Just a hope that if it were possible and not yet considered.
I would have happily done it 40 years ago!
Muddin' Season
Mud, wet mud, sloppy mud and slick mud.
Enjoyed the course layout, greens were slow bit fair.
Knew it was going to be sloppy and it did not disappoint. Sucks losing a ball that plugs in the fairway, but such is winter golf in PNW. Enjoyed the round and the Bald Eagles on 17.
Slow play
The pro shop had single join a couple and myself, great we are a foursome now. Unfortunately the single kept repeating “I never play before, only practice. Well their turn to tee off and they didn’t know or have any tees. 🤦♂️ They also slowed us way down due to no golf knowledge, leaves bag in all the wrong places. By the 4th we are holding up about 3-5 groups at this time the players assistant arrives to tell us to speed up, at this time I informed the players assistant about our playing partner and ask him to tell our slow player how and to speed up and he says ok. Fortunately for everyone behind us they only played nine holes. By hole 11 we are now waiting for the group in front of us and I noticed one player is playing the black tees and can’t hit the ball more than 150 yards, and the kicker the ladies were playing the white tees and hit it about 75 yards. Redtail is the longest round in Portland.
The greens were just plugged and that’s understandable but the big patches of no grass on the greens to the point that it influences your putt 12 was really bad.
Not a course I would recommend
The course was overbooked and the pace of play was way too slow. The Older Marshall was very nice and professional. Unfortunately the course is overbooked, and just took way too long. The tee times are spaced too closely, and the course was in pretty bad shape. It needs a lot of work, and needs to be managed more efficiently. I will not being returning to this course.
Fun course!
Fun course with holes varying degree of difficulty. Some great options for pulling out driver. Greens were fast and a little dried out but it has been a hot summer. All staff is super helpful and friendly and they have amazing range and training facilities!
Pace of play soul crushing
Picture this, it’s a Weds morning, great weather, fairly inexpensive round thanks to golfnow, no one on the first tee box. But, once you make it to other second hole, foursome groups in carts one after the other playing terrible slow and BAD, stalling play. Finished nine even playing with two balls and chipping around and it still took 2.5 hours. Called it quits. Did I mention no one would let me play through?
A little disappointed
Fairways in bad condition. No such thing as a good lie there. Lots of overgrown clover too. Very disappointing. That said, decent greens, fairly fast.
Disappointing
The layout is nice. The course is challenging. The greens are probably the best kept part of the course and they are not great. It drains horribly! I don’t think anything around is worse. Also they clover, dandelions, and crab grass throughout. Notorious for slow play, good luck getting around in less than 4.5 hours! It’s a shame! It could be rad, instead it’s sad. 😂
Great layout and course- terrible conditions
After 8 years I finally tried RedTail. Usually the massive crowds, slow play, and unkept course conditions you can see from the putting green kept me away.
But today it was raining, freezing, cheap, and... Empty. Let's try it!
I loved the course. It's interesting challenging and could be Really good. Just as good as it's proshop and range.
It's a shame every tee box is littered in broken tees. The drainage is poor, and the grass is spotty, a variety, and ungroomed. Some greens were fair others... Questionable.
But I had fun. And it was empty.
The course had many areas with taller grass and a lot of marsh areas on the sides of the fairways. It is well laid out and easy to follow. Know that they charge $18 perversion for a cart. The greens were not in very good shape especially on the front 9 with bare spots and bumpy areas. The greens on the back 9 seemed better.
