Palmer at Saddlebrook Golf & Tennis Resort
The Palmer Course is one of two championship courses designed by Arnold Palmer at the Saddlebrook Resort just north of Tampa. Although it is seemingly tame at 6,273 yards, it plays much tougher. The golf course features more elevation changes than the resort's other course, the Saddlebrook. The undulating, tree-lined fairways were designed to mimic a hilly New England course but the moss-covered cypresses, palm trees, and marshy swamplands are true to the Florida landscape. The layout features tight fairways framed with contoured mounding and the occasional water hazard but the most formidable challenge comes from the bunkers strategically placed along the undulating greens. The approaches to the tiered greens, which are often sloped from back to front, demand accuracy. Golfers should be prepared to use every club in their bag and employ a variety of different shots.

Beautiful course; bring extra balls
Played the Palmer course, first time. Friendly and attentive staff at arrival. You do need to be early enough to accommodate the time needed for valet parking and short shuttle to cart station. *Despite the price details on GolfNow, valet parking is not included and is a $5 fee.
The course was in good condition, with cart path only due to many moist areas on fairways. Which is great for grass, but terrible for balls plugging and disappearing. I had several balls, hit into fairways, simply...vanish. This is the only reason for a four star rating, because the challenging layout, the beautifully manicured landscaping, and the perfect greens are otherwise a 5 star experience. Pace of play, as a single, 3 hrs. Nobody in front or behind until 15th hole. Unforgiving of any deviations in distance or direction due to the number of water/bunker hazards. Thoroughly enjoyable round despite the issue with wet areas. Definitely a must-play course.
A Good Course Marred. By Rain
The Saddlebrook Palmer course is challenging with the final layout. However, there was a big storm last night and it was cartpath only when I played. The fact is, the course does not drain at all that is terrible after a rain storm. Today was cartpath only which only made for a long round
Always a good experience
Beginning with the property guard the entire staff is friendly and helpful. Pro Shop team is always friendly and helpful as are those tending to the carts. Ranger is great and due to hot weather was circling the course with much appreciated cold water.along with a smiling lady on the beverage cart. Despite our recent heavy rains the course and greens continue to be well maintained. Always enjoy the facilities and appreciate the accommodating staff.
Good condition for moist period
Nice greens, course wet but better than most local courses. Only got slow at end when I caught up with a foursome... How can people play slow in 95 degree humid weather? Personnel very nice, honored my desire to play alone. Beware parking. $5 valet fee or park over a mile away and ride van. Arrive 25 minutes earlier than expected unless you do valet. Driving range facilities are a long way from course, so factor that in, too. Still nice getaway.
Course should not have been OPEN for play
The course was soaked and we should not have been allowed to play. It was cart path only, my shoes were soaked after the first hole and I was in the fairway. Too much water on the course, and the course was damaged in quite a few areas by carts, and equipment.
The valet staff charged a fee even after I showed them it was included in the Golf Now price.
Wet but enjoyable
The Palmer course at Saddlebrook boasts a fair challenge of golf. Accuracy off the tee is rewarded but not always a must. With room for error on the first shot it is crucial to approach the green with a quality second shot. Most greens are very small and have a fair amount of undulations. There are a few greens that are hour glass shaped, choked down by sand traps to each side. The course was very wet today which made it difficult on second shot and judgement of the green speed. The layout is fantastic, there are some very great holes like number 8, a practically U-shaped par 5 that slopes from left to right as you approach the green, with water hugging the right edge. Also, I really enjoyed number 12, it’s a straight forward hole where your tee shot is placed on the top of a hill and you’re hitting downhill 20+ feet to the green. My biggest criticism of the layout is that the finishing holes are rather uneventful. So much so that you end with a fairly pedestrian par 3. All in all, it’s a great course that’s a fair challenge.
P. S. If you book on Golfnow it will not tell you that you have to pay a $5 valet fee, but you do so be prepared.
Course in great shape
I had played this course many years ago but found a great rate available. The course was in great shape. Greens were rolling good and course was challenging. I will go back to play again soon.
Beware of the extra slow greens.
I say it's well worth it because of the price I paid and for the layout of the course. I'm actually playing again tomorrow, the saddlebrook course, we played the palmer course today. I'm a little disgusted that they force you to pay $5 for parking now, there is no self parking lot just valet. So tomorrow will be my last round there for a long while.
The greens were slower than molasses running downhill on a cold day, I needed thor's hammer to putt today. For a resort course, the greens are too slow.
Overall everyone is pleasant and I have always enjoyed playing both courses. GPS would be a nice upgrade and having the snack bar open on the turn might help, especially with how hot it has been. So if you're not prepared, you will suffer out there like we did today. Yes there's a cart girl, but we only saw her twice.
Staff was super friendly. Palmer course was closed so rerouted to Saddlebrook course. It was cart path only, which was full of potholes and crumblin
Fairways were either barren or freshly mowed with grass mounds in abundance. Cost was very inexpensive, but I spent twice as much in tips to the excellent staff. Must valet park and pay, plus tip. Then shuttled to Golf Pro Shop, with tip to driver. Then club staff takes over to transfer clubs from shuttle to golf cart - more tips.
Play this course.
If you haven’t already had an opportunity, give it a try. I played the Palmer course and it was a great test and an even better value for the money. Lots of pros so I’ll start there. The layout is very unique. Short but challenging with doglegs, tight landing areas, lots of water and bunkers and multi-tiered greens. A challenge, but very score-able as well. The greens and fairways were phenomenal, maybe a little bit soft but rolled true and no bumps. Rough was thick but playable. One con would be the fact that there were clumps of recently cut grass all over the rough. Making it difficult to find errant tee shots. The only other con would be a little disorganization when it comes to tee times and groupings. Overall I really enjoyed my experience at the resort.
Not sure about some of these negative reviews... this Course is in the best shape you are going to find. Any complaints people are just being difficult. Best course I have played in the Tampa area and getting the deal price its incredible bargain.
Great staff. Great courses
Just finished 4 rounds at Saddlebrook. 3 on Palmer course and 1 on Saddlebrook. Courses were a little wet but still played well. Will be back again. All staff were great. Ask for Matt or Logan at the golf shop.
Just aa nice place to play
Only drawback is valet parking but should be expected at a golf and spa resort.
Course was good but just aerated
The course was in good shape. Only downfall was it was just aerated. But still a course we like to play and always go back.
The course is absolutely beautiful...but the practice putting green is a joke. The practice green has 3 holes.and were so slow. The course greens were great, but practice greens may have looked nice... way too slow...no even close to course greens.
I read previous reviews about driving range being too far away. They weren't kidding.
Still worth Golfnow price which is a great deal...But
