Maybe the Best Course on the RTJ Trail

The Ridge course seems to have a more devoted following, but I've always thought the Valley course is superior. The opening tee shot is perhaps the most spectacular on the entire RTJ Trail; if not, it's second only to the beautiful first hole on the Judge at Capitol Hill. Valley also has more memorable holes and a better variety of holes. The fairways are wide but with strategically placed hazards, so you have to think your way around the course, but it's gettable if you'll play to the landing zones.

Course was in absolutely terrific shape when I went. The greens were flawless. Bunkers were extremely well maintained. Pin locations were borderline sadistic, but nobody's perfect. I am pretty stingy about handing out five-star ratings, but the Valley course undoubtedly earned it.

One of my favorite courses anywhere

This course is visually stimulating and intimidating. The layout is fantastic, with dramatic elevation changes which flow nicely from tree lined hole to tree lined hole (up, down, across). It seems that it would be impossible to score here, but if you hit it semi-straight with some distance this place is gettable as fairways are generous. Course conditions were exceptional. They had just punched the greens about 8 days before I arrived, but there was no issue, as the maintenance staff had done such a good job it had no effect on the ball rolling even around the cups. The greens, while they always seemed to be perched up on a ledge, or across a ravine are not too complicated. Generally, putts only break once and the drama associated with getting to the greens doesn't' necessarily apply once you are there. I played the valley course last year and while I thought it was a nice course too. The true gem at this place to me is the ridge course. I like playing here in November, as golf season is almost over and the parking lot during the week was not too full. Pace of play therefore was excellent. If you load this place up with players I could imagine that pace would be an issue with all the possible places that golf balls could end up. To sum it all up in a neat little bow, one only needs to look at the title of this review.

Target golf

Other reviewers have captured the divisive opinions between which of Oxmoor Valley's courses are better. Both are strong, but there are differences. Which course one prefers seems to center around whether you prefer Bent greens (Ridge) or TifEagle Bermuda greens (Valley). The Ridge, which also provides more elevation change, offers no quarter from the very start. Less than well-struck tee balls will leave mid irons into a large, elevated green. The par-5 second hole rewards good drives with an opportunity to get on in two. Seeing a theme here? You must drive the ball well on the Ridge to score well. The par-5 third hole is one of my favorites on the course and Trail alike. A small pond squeezes the landing area off the elevated tee, but there is more room up the right half than appears. From there, the hole plays back uphill. This green was literally blasted out of rock, creating a beautiful, blind approach. I hope you have the fortune of playing this hole while a train passes by on the tracks that run the length of the right side of the hole. It is a neat experience. The target golf continues throughout the rest of the round. Playing to the 150-yard poles is always a prudent play on any of the Trail courses, and this is no exception. The par-5 12th is a highlight of the inward nine. Notice the seldom-used double fairway on the left. It doesn't look like you could fit a ball into it from the tee box and, even if you were able to, it looks like there is no fairway to hold it. But it is an optical illusion. I mention this only because if you happen to hook one down there, it is not dead. And if the pin is on the left side of the green it can really shorten the approach. Tip for the par-4 14th: The end of the fairway is a bit of an illusion. It looks like the end of a runway, but be advised there is no trouble beyond it and the best play is to drill something that runs over the edge, setting up a short approach. The par-5 18th is a brute. Stay down the right side! Tips: sharpen your tee game. Play to the 150-yard poles to stay out of trouble and stay below the hole. And finally, be aware...forced carries litter this course.

First RTJ expereince

Wow, what a first experience, why haven't I played these courses sooner. I was on my way home from a golfing week in Hilton Head, I would have much rather preferred these courses. From tee to green the conditions and layouts were amazing, scenic yet challenging. I played with two gentlemen who have been on every course on the trail, and I am hooked. Need to get our spring outing moved from Las Vegas Nevada to Alabama !!

RTJ does not disappoint.

Every time I play a RTJ course I am not disappointed. This time was not any different. The course was in good shape, especially for March. I thoroughly enjoyed the course layout although a couple holes seemed to repeat themselves.

I would NOT pay full price of 80ish bucks, but the twilight rate ( which I played ) was an AWESOME deal @ 31. I saved 7-8 bucks by going through GolfNow instead of just showing up ( after GolfNows $5 fee ) and getting the twilight rate direct from the course. ( I asked - I've been hosed once or twice by paying more than if I just showed up )

Wet but Great...

The course was in good shape even though the course was wet from days of rain. The Ridge is challenging yet fair. Lots of blind shots on both fairways and greens. The staff was very attentive and friendly to all of our needs. If youre playing on a Sunday and like an adult beverage with your warm up, you'll wanna wait until after noon to book your tee times.

Flat lie on tee only

Very challenging layout. Need to play it a few times as there are plenty of times you can't see the ball land. Great par 3's. Make sure you play the appropriate tee as many second shots are up hill.

Tough Course

The fairways are narrow with woods on both sides. Lots of sand traps in mistake locations. Tough to play first time without knowledge of creeks, etc. Picturesque course that requires accuracy over length.

Not the Typical RTJ Trail Experience!

First, let me start by saying that I am from Middle Tennessee and thoroughly enjoy making treks to Alabama to play the high quality RTJ Trail. It is wonderful having such well-designed courses in a fairly close proximity. I have played multiple courses, including Mindbreaker, Heartbreaker, and Backbreaker at Silver Lakes, Highlands and River at Hampton Cove, and Fighting Joe at The Shoals. My playing partners and I thoroughly enjoyed each of those experiences, particularly the exceptional quality of the courses and the great friendliness shown by the staff at each of these courses. Unfortunately, that was not the case at Oxmoor Valley. Considering the time of the year, the course conditions were quite good with the greens rolling smoothly and the fairways and greens being in good playing condition. Both courses presented a very fair challenge, with the Ridge being a very fun track to play! On the other hand, the staff friendliness was very poor. One of my playing partners booked both of our tee times (8:20 at Valley and 12:50 at Ridge) by phone two days prior to our arrival. We arrived at the course a few minutes prior to 8:00 and were told by one of the cart boys to just put our bags on any cart. The other cart boy was much more interested in his cell phone than any golfers arriving. I might also add that in the several times I passed the area where the cart boys were stationed, at least one of them was on the cell phone every time. That ranged from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. My playing partners and I found this to be very disrespectful and terribly poor management. In all of my RTJ experiences, that is the first time that has occurred! At other courses, the cart boys have eagerly been waiting to obtain my bag and are glad to engage in conversation. That was certainly not the case here! After this, we entered the clubhouse and looked around for a few minutes. My playing partner who booked our tee times stepped to the counter to inform the pro shop attendants of our tee times so we could go ahead and pay and head to the course. We were informed that they had our tee time for 12:50, but not for 8:20. The attendant's excuse was that they were using a new tee time system. Fortunately, the attendant was nice enough to work us in to an 8:25 tee time. We were thankful for that, but how do you have down one tee time and not the other? My playing partners and I did find both rounds to be rather enjoyable, especially considering the time of year and the intermittent rain showers we played through. We had no real problems with the golf courses themselves, but found the customer service to be very disturbing. I will not say that this RTJ Trail site is off of my replay list, but it will certainly take some serious thought before returning.

Home course

This is my home course. It is a fantastic facility with a 18hole (very challenging) par 3 course. And two other courses with layouts that are a constant challenge no matter how many time I play it. My only qualm with the operation is that the Rangers and starters and very bad about staking groups on top of each other so it makes very a bit rushed feeling. Other than that.. If you can get the right spacing (which is the starters responsiblilty) you can have a very nice and FOCUSED round and learn a great deal about you game and equipment! Great place and well taken care of. Be careful though there are some rather large stones in some of the bunkers. They could also use a larger chipping area. The driving range is not optimal for accurate viewing of your shots. It's a great home course as I said. I will be playing here for a long time with no real regrets!

Lots of Hills!

I've played this course a couple of times. The last time was cart path only due to rain earlier in the week. Be prepared to hike if this is the case. The course is all hills and valleys. It can be a lot of fun, but it can also be alot of work. By the time we finished our round over 4.5hrs later we were worn out.
