La Purisima
Played the Blues (6670/73.1/136) with GK Guru's Gary & Pedro in brisk, breezy early morning conditions that warmed up to quite pleasant by the conclusion of the round. We played in around 4.5 H and enjoyed the surroundings. The tees were above average with adequate coverage. Several are crowned but only the par 3's needed divot repair. Only #3 (coots) was in poor shape. The rough was lush, thick and punitive. Forget advancing clubs their regular distance out of this stuff. Much thicker than most So Cal courses, tough to chip out of or hit the longer clubs necessary to reach the green if you miss the fairway here. The sand traps were nicely maintained with thick sand. The large greens were mostly smooth, putted medium fast speed and held approach shots well. Only #2 (coots) was not in well above average condition. Biggest negative is that there is no GPS on the carts and this is one of the poorest marked courses for yardage I have ever played. The customer service was excellent from everyone encountered. No drink cart, but adequate water on the course. Fun, very demanding layout. Love that there are zero houses anywhere close and all the old oak trees around the course. I get beat up by this course every time I play here but still enjoy the experience. Recommended = Yes.
Great course for a challenge
Staff was friendly. I was paired up with 2 other golfers who knew the course. That was a good thing because you have to know where the hidden hazards are. The course was very challenging. I enjoyed it very much. Definitely one of the toughest courses in the area. I would highly recommend.
Beautiful and challenging
Well groomed fairways and fast greens. The rough was long due to the recent rain, so had some challenges getting out. Shouldn't have been there in the first place! The bunkers were inconsistent- some soft sand, some hard. Could do with more than one rake per bunker too! Great practice facility. The staff were excellent! Everyone in the pro shop were friendly, and helpful. We liked the course so much we went back the next day!
Great Day of Gold
Recently played La Purisima and it was a great day of golf as soon as we were cleared to play after the frost in the morning. The pace of play was excellent and the course was in great condition. Because of the recent rain, there was standing water in some of the sand traps, but it also made the course green.
Too good for 250mi. away from home
beautiful course, challenging, good maintainance, very friendry staff, beautiful rustic view and good price.
this course is in great condition
This course is in great condition despite the drought. I would suggest it to anyone for the views alone. But if your sort of new to the game, don't be to hard on yourself because it's super tough.
Bring your "A" game!
"La P" is special...always worth the hour drive for me coming from Santa Barbara. Tough course, demands focus, but lots of fun. Good shot placement is key to success. Trees are a factor on many holes.
Never seen the greens anything but immaculate, and fairways are superb even with California's drought.
Overall great value for your golf budget.
La Purisima
Played the Blues (6670/73.1/136) with Ron in 4H on a Groupon deal that was a B-Day gift. Thanks #1 daughter! The weather was overcast, calm, foggy and cool. I played most of the round in a windbreaker, which considering most of my recent golf has been in over 100 degree weather was quite the change!
I like this layout even though it bests me up every time I play here. I commented to Ron that there are numerous holes that look like they line up well and are not that tough... but 5-7 strokes later on the next tee? The rough really gets me here, it's much thicker than most So Cal courses, tough to chip out of or hit the longer clubs necessary to reach the green if you miss the fairway here.
The tees were average with adequate coverage. Several are crowned and needed divot repair.
The fairways were mostly good. A few problem areas that the maintenance staff was out watering, but mostly good lies and nice to play off of.
The rough was usually thick and penal. Not real tall, but the ball usually sat down, especially tough in early morning wet conditions.
The sand traps were a mixed bag. Sand depth okay, but too many rocks. Tough traps here, you have earned an up/down out of most of these if you get a sandie.
The greens putt much better than they look. Mixture of grasses, they look patchy. Medium speed, held approach shots well, mostly smooth.
The customer service was excellent from everyone, especially Russ in the Pro Shop. No drink cart, but adequate water on the course. Had an excellent Cheesburger special after the round in the onsite restaurant. Fun, very demanding course. Love that there are zero houses anywhere close and all the old oak trees around this layout. I get beat up by the course every time I play here but still enjoy the experience. Recommended = Yes.
Nice track
I really enjoyed the course. Wish I had time to play it again after now seeing the layout. The greens were very receptive. Golf staff couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating to meet my needs. Hope to visit and play it again. Couldn't beat the golf now hot deal price of $30 w/cart.
Fun, Challenging
Always fun, always kicks my butt, can't wait to try again!!
The could have a US open here
One of the best and toughest public courses in California
Hidden gen
We passed it once as the signage from the highway is not great. That was pretty much the only thing not great about this amazing track. We did twilight on a Friday, and were a half an hour late from LA due to accidents on the highway coming up. Staff couldn't have been more understanding and helpful and got is right out once we arrived. Local knowledge help a lot as we discovered but still good shots were rewarding as this very difficult but fair layout never stopped challenging. Great undulating narrow greens rolled as true as can be. What a great time for only 30 bucks includingt cart for twilight. Brava
Best course for miles
This is the most hidden gem golf course around. Yes, it can be really tough, especially when it is windy, but the new management has made the course more playable for higher handicap golfers by cutting rough and slowing down the greens. This course really makes you think and is just awesome. I always come back even when I have a tough round. There is a reason why it is a US Open qualifying course. If you want to play in a pretty place, on a challenging and fun course, with light crowds, and very reasonable green fees, this is your place. Plus, there is a great chance you'll see some cool wildlife like hawks, bobcat, and coyotes. I normally don't write reviews, especially since I want La Purisima to myself, but thought it deserved the recognition.
Perfect course
Tough course! Tough greens but I wanna play again!
Value at La Purisima.
Aside from the rough where lies were difficult because of hard pan with tuffs of grass creating a nest effect with firm tuffs of grass around the ball, and the ball itself sitting on hard packed dirt, the course was otherwise very well maintained. Blind tee shots, elevated tee box, elevated greens, and water in play all added to the fun of the round. No one pushed us from behind, and no waiting to tee off. The views were spectacular. All in all, a great course to play...well worth the green fees.
Tough as usual
La P is a tough track for the bogey plus golfer. But it is a rewarding test of your skills and shotmaking ability. Greens were recovering from aeration and a bit slow... thankfully. Lush rough that penalizes, seldom a flat lie in fairway and strategic bunkers and trees make for a tough day if you're not hitting it really well. I was pleased with my 94 and I'm a 16hcp. One day I hope to break 90 there.
Beautiful, challenging and a perfect golf course
As good a course as I have ever played. Best value on a quality course I have ever played
The old LaP greens are back
The weather on Christmas eve was ok, but very windy and cool in the low 50s. The rough was also difficult due to rain and growth, but the greens were back to 11 stimpmeter speed and very challenging. This is a difficult course in the best conditions, but speedy greens and tough pin locations make it even more so. That's what I have always loved about the course - never easy, always a challenge, and always interesting. There are areas of the fairways and rough that are not in the best shape, but hopefully a rainy winter will fill them in. Bring your A game, low expectations and a lot of patience to LaP. It's a beautiful and treacherous track.
Difficult course with super fast greens
Beautiful course that will challenge you. The greens were really fast with enough slope that it was very difficult to putt successfully.
Difficult course
The course was in good shape, but just difficult for the an intermediate player.
The staff was very friendly, but the restaurant/grill closed at 2;00pm. not enough time to get food at the turn.
