Not bad; not great
Definitely not a bad course by any means but for the price they're charging it could use some work. Course is probably $100K from being where it should be.
Tee boxes, cart paths, fairways on some holes and yardage markers all need work or need to be actually created. But the greens ran consistent. Not fast greens at all but they were soft so you could play aggressive. Challenging layout but not the course you want to play the first time by yourself. Lot of unknown tee shots.
Overall it's a 3.5 but couldn't give it that.
A Windy Challenge Not for the Faint of Heart
Really enjoyed this track. Bring your game or you will struggle all day. It's always windy at La Purisima so avoid the course if you don't want the wind challenge. You need to take an extra club or two at some holes with your approach shots. Greens are beautiful and fairways in good shape even given the severe drought CA is experiencing. Rough is penalizing so keep it in the fairway at all costs. A good position in the fairway rewards you with a open view at the greens.
Somewhat challenging course
There are two courses, La Purisma and River course at Alisal, in Solvang/Lompoc Area. Both couses I played first time last week. I will definitely recommend La Purisma, but will not River course at Alisal. Alisal is too flat.....no challenging.....
good time
great golf and new owners are doing great things to course ....
Excellent, except for the snack bar.
Got a great rate on this site! The course was almost empty; played as a single, was let through by 2 two-somes, and finished in about 3 hours after waiting on a threesome for the last two holes.
Pro shop was very friendly and helpful, but when I went to the snack bar at the turn, there was nobody to help me. There was a gal bussing tables, but either she was a golfer or she wasn't willing/able to help. The snack bar employee, it turns out, was next door in the Pro Shop talking to the counter person. NOT GOOD!!! So, I subsisted on water from the fountains on the course.
I have played this course since it opened and love the layout tremendously. The greens were lightning fast and had a pure roll. Except for a few brown spots on a few fairways, it was in tremendous condition. Great times!
Tough Course, great condition
As always, this is a real test for even the best golfers. The weather was cloudy and there was some breeze late in the round. Facility has been rumored to be up for sale and in poor condition. I was informed by the staff, that it did sell in 2013/14 and owner has made investments in upgrading facility and building lodging. It was in excellent shape. The only criticism is that they need to do something with the cart paths. Rutted trails when there is a trail, sometimes difficult to figure out where you are supposed to go.
A little rough
A number of blind shots with plenty of rough rough. Greens putted very true and though hilly they were easy to read. Though the greens were fairly fast distance on putts was easy to figure out since they were so uniform. Good course that with some familiarity probably gets better and better. But why the long rough?
A Bladt
Big and wild . No cart paths in places. Local knowledge would help . Very friendly and helpful staff .
Aaaaaaah La P! I love you.
Aaaaaah. What a course. Everybody who's ever played this place knows the secret - it's an amazing course you wish you could play everyday. What a wicked, brilliant, challenging design. In a perfect setting: Cool wind off the coast blistering through, the unbelievable up and downs matched by the sideway lies under the perfect California sun. I really wish I could play this place every day. Every day. I mean it! OK so the driving range has a lot to be desired, cheap balls with hardly any grass but mostly mud on the range. But you won't care - because the course awaits. As it says on the plaque by the main entrance, the designer intended the place to be a challenge, and attaining Par is like getting to Shangri La. Yes, it's that challenging, especially when the wind blows as it mostly does. Today, unfortunately, the course was playing rather soft, and the greens had not fully recovered from the punching, so they were still a bit jumpy in spots. But still - I think about this course all the time. I love it that much. Why does it have to be so far away???
such a disappointment
got there early with a hot deal and was told even though i was a single and there were open groups ahead of me i needed to wait.
the counter person said they are very strict with a hot deal time. no marshal on the course, played as a 4 some for 4 holes in 1:10 mins, i left the group and played with another single and we moved much better. the course has horrible conditions with weeds everywhere as well as gopher? holes. not a full cart path thru out and the course is not well defined, so many carts in odd spots by tees, bunkers etc (other groups in odd places too, so following didn't always help) bunkers are in terrible condition. will not play here again.
Must play
All green far ways and greens, thank God for well water, they have two of. The greens are in good shape.
Disapointed
I wish Golfnow or the course would tell you that the course has recently been aerified before you signed up. It is not fun at all to be playing on a already difficult course with added problem.
Classic Course
Beautifully designed course. The course conditions were good.
The back nine plays completely different than the front nine. The front nine is open almost links style but the back nine is tight lined with trees. Being new to the course it was difficult at times to know where the next hole was, there was a lack of signage directing you to the next hole. The play was quick, 4 hour round.
The hole designs were very challenging. First four holes have water in play. The next 5 holes were on a mountain slope and the back nine takes you into the forest. One of the things I appreciated was that there were good landing areas rewarding good shots.
challenging course
I enjoy this course. It is more difficult than most of the other courses in the area. They have cleared out some of the bad areas to make it more fair. The left side of #14 is an example. It used to be that if you hit your ball in there it was lost. Now you can find it but might have to chip back to the fairway.
Difficult Course
A Slope Rating of 130 from the White Tees explains enough. It was a fun course but not an enjoyable course. Don't think I will return.
Not What I expected!
I've played here before although it was a few years back, I got an exceptional deal on line and thought I would give it a shot.
I was really disappointed , the course is hosting the Canadian Tour qualifying in two weeks, the course conditions were not what one would expect for a professional tournament host. The fare ways were sparse, the bunkers like cement, the greens were fast and were the best part of the course. I was disappointed to say the least. I know water is a problem in C.A.
But very sparse fare ways with lots of weeds, clover, even dandy lions is not what one wants from a tournament ready layout.
Price isn't everything I guess.
Rough ride
I can't imagine playing this course if it rains again in Cali, cart paths are rough trenches and the other areas are like a cobblestone field. It was my first time playing there so I had no idea what to expect. Conditions are a little spotty, some areas mowed down around greens and right next to it, aren't. Sand traps are inconsistent with sand, but the real problem is all have a sudden face or 3' - 4', even some fairway traps. Most courses I play have a few of these but not every trap. A lot of the traps have no way in or out other than a 3' drop or step out. Not to playable for an old gridiron casualty like myself as it was fairly hilly. I was lucky and had a good day with direction of shots so once I realized how penal the traps were, I made allowances. As a 17 handicap, I was 6 over that and if I play there again, I will score better. Nice course but not for the weak of knees.
Great course. Disappointing snack bar
Awesome course. Not as difficult as I was always led to believe, which made it more enjoyable to play. Our tee time was a little past noon and the wind started to pick up around 3 to 4. Which was expected so I would definitely recommend playing well before 12pm. My only complaint, is that coming off of hole 9 and seeing the little shack that was meant to order food I was stoked since my brother and I were both starving. The wires were cut on the telephone so we had to call from our cell phone. They answered only to say they were closed. It wasn't even 3pm.
Good pace, rough ride.
Love the coarse, there are some challenging holes and several with blind tee shots. the pace of play was very good and I enjoyed the round. When I'm in the area I will play this coarse. There was no restaurant or snack shop, only some snacks in the pro shop. (It looked like they may be refurbishing the restaurant)
My wife came with and rode along in the cart, where there were cart path's they were very rough, where there weren't you pretty much got beat up. I usually walk, probably why I never noticed the condition of the paths before.
Great value and wonderful golf course
We had a perfect day at LP. Weather was awesome not too much wind. Golf course conditions were very good. Only complaint is the tee boxes could be a little better. The greens were very good, fast, rolled pure and very healthy. Pace of play was 3.5 hrs and wide open at 12:30. Definitely recommend checking this course out. Don't be scared of the wind or the length, just play an appropriate tee and enjoy the quietness and beautiful hilslide beauty. I shot 83 with three triples....oops.
