Great value, great greens!
Had a blast at Malibu. The pace of play was almost as quick as the greens, which were very fast. Very important to be below the hole here. That being said they roll very true. Great secluded layout that requires a lot of different shots. Challenging yet fair.
Malibu CC: Change is gonna come
Malibu Country Club is about to undergo a major facelift come fall of 2014 -- 40 bungalows are to be built, meeting facilities expanded and the golf course itself groomed and retooled. So the course will be shut down for a spell, then reborn as the Malibu Institute, a joint venture with USC.
The time to have a last look before the project starts is right now! Green fees are reasonable, the outdoor experience is without parallel and the track is plenty challenging unless you have extraordinary control off the tee. Malibu CC is carved out of a canyon just miles from the Pacific, and it's hard to find a flat lie or a four-foot putt that won't make your knees knock.
The par 5s are modest in length but require forethought and restraint -- number 4 plays to only 482 yards from the tips, but a nice 200-yard downhill five-iron will thread the narrow needle far better than driver. Patience is greatly rewarded out here, and mind over muscle is not a bad mantra.
Slow play
I came up to malibu to see how it was course in pretty good shape. Greens a little bumpy bit worst part was the pace of play. I went out at 12:45 and was done at 5 I caught up to groups that had all started before noon and them proceeded to wait at every hole after the 11th for at least ten Minutes if not more
Golf
The golf carts made the first experience brutal. Always jerking that I walked the whole course. Unacceptable for a $100 round of golf
Not Enjoyable
The course condition was just ok, nowhere close to top standard. The worst part was the golf cart. The guy at the pro shop politely informed us all golf carts had battery connection problems that may stall if going full throttle uphill; it would go fine and just a little slower with only half throttle. We appreciated his warning and did not think it would be a big deal. Then the starter assigned us 2 carts with the GPS units removed, but we saw all other carts had the GPS attached. We asked if we could switch to other carts with GPS. He told us all the GPS units were not working and the golf carts were the same. We took the carts and did not think it was a big deal again. We were so wrong, we had to find the sweet spot of throttle to get the cart going uphill, otherwise it would stall. And it moved even slower at back 9. We did not bother calling to have the carts replaced. We thought all the carts were the same and just wanted to get it over with. But we were done, we saw some carts run by pretty fast. That made me thinking if it was just our unlucky day or something else…
You will enjoy your round.
This was our second visit back to Malibu in the past couple of months and we found the experiences consistent. This course is in a beautiful setting with challenging but very playable holes. The greens are decent speed (not to fast/not to slow) and role very true. They are indeed hard to read so expect a few three puts till you play here a few times (at least I hope so). The staff was exceptional in all ways, we felt as if we were at our home course. Two minor drawbacks are no driving range, just warm up stations and sketchy cart performance on aging cart paths. We are going back again and you will enjoy your round if you can handle shooting two or three strokes above your handicap.
Great value if using Hot Deal option
Extremely beautiful course but only for those who live north of 405/101 junction. I live in the southbay and it took me 4 1/2 going and coming back.
The cart died on hole no 2 and the other cart GPS died on hole 10, the replacement cart offered did not have a GPS :-)
Tee boxes are worn out and greens are extremely slow. If you were hoping to have a cart lady swing by there is none , so remain thirsty and hungry till the turn.
Several holes have blind shots and the fairways are way too narrow with little options for recovery shots
Overrated
I had heard good things about Malibu but it was exceptionally disappinting. It was in about as bad of shape as a golf course could be and we went through 4 golf carts to get through the round. Only saving grace was smooth greens and played really quickly.
Another great day playing Malibu!
This is just a beautiful and challenging course for the money! Especially with the GolfNow specials! Sure it could be in better shape but if it was it would cost a lot more. Tight fairways and greens that are in great shape really makes this course great! I drive 2 hours from south OC to meet a golf buddy from Ventura there. As it's such a nice course with no noise or outside world distractions. Just great mountain and valley views!
Great Course
This is a beautiful 18 hole course. I would have given it a higher rating on conditions of facility if their carts were in better shape. They are loaded with GPS units which works intermittently, but the real problem are the carts themselves. They stall constantly when going up and down hills. Most of the time, it would have been faster, and less jolting to walk.
Regardless of the carts, this course is well worth the cost of play and I would highly recommend it.
Great scenery
The first hole is wide compared to the others. If you like narrow courses that force you to think your way around, then this course is for you! The scenery is great and the weather was better!
Great course for the price
The course was in great condition. I gave the quality of food one star only because we didn't get to try it. 19th hole is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The snack shop did not have anyone attending to it. My only other criticism was that when we made the turn they were letting out people onto the back nine to start their round and thus caused a bit of a log jam. Other that that, it was a great round. $36 on hot deal.
breathless views
Surrounded by Sta Monica mountains, This course is a must play for me. Awesome lay out. The fairways are tight. But you have to stop every other holes to enjoy the never ending views of the beautiful mountains. The greens are patchy but tolerable. Driving range is a net. The gas in the carts work intermittently. And to be frank, i didn't think it was giving me the correct yardage anyway.
overall it was a good day .
Don't play here save your money and go somewhere else...... !!!!

Drought really affecting the course
The Course has a really nice lay out, but I'm guessing because of the drought that is on going in California the course is very dry.
The GREENS were very bumpy and patchy.
BIG PROBLEM was that our carts' battery died out in the front nine, then they were replaced and then again the carts died in the back nine. we barely made it back the clubhouse. The GPS on the carts never worked.
When we returned after the first nine they didn't say anything to us. basically "ohh well".
We were all very disappointed,
This course has lots of potential it just seemed that their focus was else where, like the wine tasting party they were having...
Ohh yea and the snack shop after our first nine DIDN'T have any BEER!
The course is not everything is seems
The day started out great and continually went down hill from there. The pace of play was awful and Marshall's did nothing, we had a basically dead golf cart and told "well that's what they all do", the course was mixed alive and dead which at this time is so so understandable. The bartender was awesome, the starter was great. We loved the layout but would hesitate coming back because of the same issues returning. Several groups around us regretted making the drive. I'm not a negative kind of guy but for what I was hoping, things fell short.
Equally Beautiful As Challenging
I'm a 17 handicap and played this for the first time. Glad a took a cart, but had to exchange it for another - and both had issues climbing the hills. First time I've four-putted more than once in a round in a very long time. This is not a course you'd play and expect your handicap to go done, no matter what your handicap, but it is extremely beautiful and the weather typically stellar. Paying full price would not be a good idea unless you're a glutton for punishment.
Nice Challenge
I got there early and the starter let me go as a single. Pace of play was great, less than 3 1/2 hours to play 18, although three groups did let me play through, so waiting was a minimum. The course was in decent shape considering it's winter and we're in the middle of a drought. I like the layout, with a lot of elevation changes.
Overall experience
Course not in great condition, in fairness this is largely due to the drought in So Cal. Greens good and fast. Tee boxes need attention. Big distraction after nine holes the carts began to stall badly and we just managed to limp home. On inquiry we were told the batteries on the carts need replacing but it wouldn't happen for another year. Given a voucher for a reduction in green fee next time but am not inclined to return till the cart issue is fixed. Overall the course used to be in much better shape. Disappointing.
