Pasatiempo Golf Club
About
This classic golf course is arguably one of the top venues in the country. Pasatiempo was certainly one of designer Alister MacKenzie's favorites. The legendary architect made his home off the par-5 sixth hole and regarded the difficult, uphill 16th as one of the best par 4s ever designed by him or anyone else. To make it even better, the golf club embarked on a two-year restoration project headed up by Tom Doak. The result was nothing less than spectacular as bunkers and greens were to returned original specifications with modern turf and drainage technology. With its great design and elevation changes, Pasatiempo Golf Club plays much longer than its yardage and will test good players. The back nine is particularly strong, perhaps as good as any in the country.

The par-4 14th. A great example of what makes this course special. Notice the hillocks and hummocks on the left side of the fairway. Otherwise, this would be a mundane hole, but this addition collects tee shots and makes the approach interesting. Photo submitted by BrandonWebb on 08/12/2017

Makenzie called the par-4 16th the greatest two-shotter in the world, largely due to the three-tiered green. No room for error long, short or right. Photo submitted by BrandonWebb on 08/12/2017

Nice course conditions. Pretty good layout. I walked and it was a decent walking course. Greens were in great shape. Not sure if I would pay $350 but definitely worth checking out once. A lot of blind tee shots. Accurate tee shots pays off and being on the right tier on the greens.
Never disappoints
My favorite course never disappoints. Drove from Tahoe just for a day trip to play 18, turned around and went home after. Love this course.
Great Deal
Course had just completed an aerating but it was hardly noticeable given it wasn’t a plugging effort. Course was in good shape and the rough was fairly long. Still need to do something about the crossover from 12 to 14 as there is a hold up if the timing is right and players coming down on 12 interfere with those teeing off on 14. Even a sign telling those on 12 to help the speed of play by not holding those teeing off of 13.
Very difficult course
I knew before teeing it up that this was going to be a real challenge. First time players need to keep this in mind.
Amazing conditions and great test of golf
Rated as one of the best courses in US Pasatiempo does not disappoint. Strategy is key here especially on your approach shots. You need to hit to specific parts of the green to even have a chance at 2 putting. If playing this course come early and practice on their putting and chipping greens, it will totally pay off. For example if you are above the hole on certain greens you have no chance at 2 putting, your first putt will roll off the green and you must chip back. It's an excellent test of golf and a very humbling experience. Its a short course but long hitters cannot really overpower this course. Accuracy is placed at high premium here.
Best golf course I’ve been on
Pasatiempo is hands down the best course I’ve ever played. A magical day with mild temperatures, light wind, no clouds, enhanced the experience of walking the greatest course I’ve walked on. Perfect tee boxes, perfectly manicured fairways, exceptional greens with dramatic slopes and waves made for a perfect golf day. Even a triple bogey on the par 3 finishing hole was fun.
If I could afford the rates I’d play here all the time but I appreciate the rare visit and will be returning for special occasions.
Pasatiempo Critique
I had played two other courses designed by Alister Mackenzie (Cypress Point & Augusta National), and Pasatiempo differed greatly from them. The greens seemed much larger than I had expected. The course had several forced carries, that provided a challenge because I don't carry the ball as far as I did when I was younger. The routing was rather confusing, particularly on the back nine where directional signs could have helped. Shrubbery along the property line could have enhanced the back nine where houses detracted from the view. Course fronting neighbors' houses have a hodgepodge of walls, fences, their own vegetation, and nothing that detract visually. The driving range with mats for the tees, remote from the clubhouse, and probably built after the course itself, also detracted; however, I enjoyed the course.
Overpriced yet somehow worth it?
First things first this is a very expensive golf course to play in. It’s beautiful and the layout is amazing very well-maintained challenging greens. You get your moneys worth from McAllister designed golf course. It is the closest thing to Augusta that you will ever experience in California. However paying this amount of money made me think twice as I should have just played Pebble Beach or Spanish Bay or pelican Hill in Southern California however it appears that I actually had a great time playing Pasatiempo.
Very Nice.
This was the first time I played Pasatiempo and I was very pleased with my experience. This course was on my bucket list and I'm glad I played it sooner than later. The staff were friendly and helpful and had I known there were caddies I would not have gotten a cart. I played as a single and was partnered with a very nice family from out of state. I'm not going to lie it was a tuff course but I enjoyed the challenges this course threw at you. Not only the aesthetics of the course is a pleasure to look at but there's the history behind it as well that makes this one of the top 10 courses I've played throughout my 25. years learning this game. I totally give Pasatiempo a thumbs up.
An amazing but humbling experience
The course tests you early and often. The slopes are much greater than what I experience at home. I missed the green at 16 long by no more than 2 feet. Even if I had my A game that day, I'm not sure I could've kept the ball on the level. The rough is think and sticky. That was probably the most fun 8 I've ever made. The greens were hard for me to read (thank goodness for a great caddie) but rolled incredibly well and true. The staff's hospitality and service were absolutely amazing. As soon as I can get there after the course reopens, I'll be thrilled to play Pasa again.
Great layout - plays long
Course condition ok - greens were much slower than the putting green, fairways cut pretty short, no lush fairway lies, plays long - even from the middle tees (white) there were several par 4’s longer than 420 yards and a couple of long par 3’s. Very expensive for walking - although carts are available at the course for an extra cart fee (which is higher priced than other courses). Also, course is fairly hilly and not the easiest walking round. I got my round at a reduced rate due to booking it the morning of the round and also had a 20% off code - but still the total cost was much more expensive (even for walking) than other high quality courses in the area.whose tee times come with carts. I personally feel the course at Wente Vineyards, the Bridges golf course and Cinnabar golf course are equivalent if not better course conditions and also these all have very interesting layouts - for a much better price point.
