Named after a nearby highway that was once the only route to the bay area of Tampa, Old Memorial Golf Club opened for play in November 1997.

Along with a mixture of subtle and bold contours, Old Memorial's primary design feature is its bunkering. Large and beautifully sculpted, the bunkers have sand faces with long grass fingers that give them the appearance of a series of smaller bunkers. Unlike water hazards, bunkers are often just a quarter or half-shot penalty and recovery is always possible. Smyers' bunkers are dramatic, sweeping hollows of sand that intimidate, deceive, direct play and frame the course's landing areas and greens. Often, they make holes look more difficult than they really are. As one architecture editor wrote, "Not since MacKenzie or Tillinghast has a golf course architect used bunkering to make such bold statements, express such flair, instill such fear."

Old Memorial Golf Club is a pure, undisturbed sanctuary of golf, where members and guests can get away from the hectic pace of life to enjoy friendly competition, the camaraderie of golfers from diverse backgrounds, and the free exchange of ideas.

Excellent course. They were sanding the faiways while we were there but didn't take away from the quality of the course. A long test from the backs. Excellent greens and great caddies

I had the great thrill of playing alongside the architect, Steve Smyers, and it was on a picture perfect day. To play a beautiful place with the man who knows every inch of the property is an informative, eye-opening experience. And Steve is one of the nicest men you'll ever meet in this great game.

Old Memorial was a treat. The bunkering was fantastic (a Smyers trait) and each hole plays with a different wind direction than the hole before it. The course is very difficult and the greens were lightning quick, which is exactly how the members (most of them single-digit handicappers) prefer to see it.

The clubhouse and the men's grill topped off the day and made the whole experience one of the better ones you'll find anywhere in the country.

Nothing but great things to say about Old Memorial.

For the last couple years, I've played at Old Memorial in a fundraising tournament for Lowry Park Zoo. The people at the zoo run excellent special events and this one is very well done. Old Memorial is a nice host for this and other similar events (such as the Derrick Brooks Golf Tournament) and makes all the participants feel like members for a day. Forecaddies/caddies are solid guys while the course itself plays difficult but rewards accurate shotmaking. While I will never be a member at Old Memorial, I respect the property and take advantage of any opportunity to go out there and play either in a charity event or simply as a guest.
