University of South Florida Golf Course - The Claw
About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 10/2023.
The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Course conditions
Tea boxes, fairways, and most greens in bad shape.
Cow Path! 2” grass on the tee box and more Dirt than grass on the greens
This was the worse course I have played ever and I have been playing for 10 years. The grass on the tee box was 2” tall (un-cut) and the greens were not green they had more dirt than grass! For $ 47.00 what a total rip off! And the club house was a 10’ trailer. I could go on forever about how bad this was for the money! When we came up on the 18th green, the driving range and putting green practice area was being cut and watered!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Just don’t play here! I will never again and I will tell everyone how bad it was!
USF should sell this place
Not worth going. some tee boxes are pure sand. They must not have a maintenance budget because fairways are dried out with leaves everywhere. No amenities. No beverage cart. The cheap greens fees are not worth it.
I played this course a lot from 2012-2016. I heard a few years ago there was a fire in the cart barn, which must be the case because it looks condemned. The old pro shop and grill are empty, everything is out of a trailer now.
Never Play here again!
I paid $47 dollars to play on a Goat Path! More dirt on greens than grass, grass on tee boxes were not cut! 2” tall. The whole coarse should be closed down! Give me my money back 3 players at $143.48
The Claw
Played in February 2023 and won't try till February 2026, need tons of work, (praying we don't lose the Claw too!!!
Maybe worst in Tampa
no clubhouse, no bev cart, greens were bad and fairways were worse
Shadow of it's former self
It's not completely awful but it's very close. A few tee boxes are nonexistent. They are just dirt. The fairways are mostly in good shape. Half the greens are bad and about 3 are almost unplayable. I feel like they are putting in the absolute minimum while they get ready to sell the land and turn it into condos or something. I wouldn't play here again unless I was desperate. Sad. Go Bulls!
Horrible condition
If you’re thinking about playing here, don’t it’s not worth it regardless of the price. The tee boxes are sand, the fairways are sand and you guessed it..the greens are sand.
Terrible condition
The course is very poorly kept greens are terrible. Tee boxes aren’t much better. However, the bunkers are in great shape. The course itself is challenging and a good layout just in very poor conditions. You would think for a college course and of this size they would keep it up. Hopefully it gets better because I like playing there.
Horrible but cheap
Tee boxes sandy, greens ruined, slow pace, hard to take the place seriously when there’s no grass in the tee boxes and the ground is like concrete
University should take some of their endowment money and pour it into the course it has always been a crappie course
Never to Return
No carts at tee time, had to wait 30 minutes for a cart
A group of 3 came off 18 and moved to number 1 and held us up
Had to call pro shop 2 x before anyone came out
GM came out and explained because there was as no starter when group of 3 started and they were backed up they started on the back without permission
GM allowed them to continue to play
GM did offer rain check however we travelled over an hour to get there
It was a 5 hour round
Course was like a cow pasture
Course is in rough shape.
Course is in terrible shape greens were rolling but were terrible, had all kinds of weeds growing. Tee boxes were bad, fairways in bad shape. There was one hole on the back 9 that actually resembled a nice golf course, at least the fairway did. Box and green still sucked. Hopefully this place will get back to being decent, has never been a pristine course by any means but is darn right tough to even play in the current conditons. Don't plan on returning here until I see some new reviews talking about improvements.
