University of South Florida Golf Course - The Claw
About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 10/2023.
The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Embarrassment
I really hope USF doesn’t host any golf here because this is by far the worst course I’ve played in the Tampa area. 60%+ of the greens were dirt or unputtable, tee boxes hadn’t been maintained in forever, the bunkers were amazing surprisingly, and the fairways were in decent condition. A 1 putt could easily turn into a 3 putt due to the condition of the greens.
Course is borderline unplayable
The course is closing in September and it seems like they have given up on any maintenance. It was bad before but this time I went I didn’t even bother putting on more than half of the holes. The tee boxes are bare and the rough that’s just off the fairway appears to not have been mowed in weeks. The fairways and bunkers are the only positive thing about the course as the fairways are mowed and at least 75% grass and the bunkers are soft. I am fortunate to have gotten a good deal on the green fee but I would not pay full price for this course.
They should just close it now
The course was in horrible condition. Nothing was mowed. The greens were 100% dirt or mud was not worth 5dollars let alone 32. Spend your money elsewhere. Pictures of greens included.
KEEP THE CLAW OPEN
The claw needs more love on and off the green! It would be a hotspot for the community if more time was spent on areas that would impact the game positively and not just for looks. I hope the claw gets a second chance and doesn’t close any time soon GREAT beginner course!!!
Not worth the time or money
The course is in shambles. Greens, tee boxes and overall course is in bad shape. If this was priced at $20 I could understand, but they price it over $35 and not worth the time or money spent. If you are from out of town, book something else. Please take my warning and go anywhere else to play. If you get a hot deal for $20, go run around, but don’t expect flat greens, groomed fairways, tee boxes or anything for that matter. “Clubhouse” is a trailer shack as well 🤦♂️🤨
Reminds me of the War
If you miss the feeling of being shot at while in a trench this course is for you. Plenty of fire from hackers slicing into you.
I’m all seriousness $38 is a joke. This course isn’t worth more than $15. You have to move your ball to grass in the fairways. The greens look like bombs went off. The layout is uninspired.
Please save your time and money and go literally ANYWHERE else.
Still a dump
The 7th green is the worst of any course in the area. The 8th tee box is basically unplayable. Greens are quite fast. Only play here if you get a hot deal and every other course is booked
Round at The Claw
We were glad to find a mid-morning tee time for two under a hundred bucks. We were disappointed with the tee boxes and greens, as many of them were in poor condition. Some of the tee boxes were just dirt.
The pace of play and layout of the course was good. On a positive note, I hit my first ever eagle.
Probably won’t be coming back to this course unless they fix the greens, as we barely had a chance to make a putt with the irregularities.
DO NOT PLAY
This course was completely run down and in the worst shape of any golf course I’ve ever seen. Tee boxes were complete sand, golf carts covered in dirt, no pro shop, greens didn’t have grass. Unreal they charged $45 dollars to play or are even open at this point
Great staff great layout
Every time I go here I’m on a 1st name basis with Carl Easton Natalie I love to golf here layout is great only issue I have is the rough is always to rough so you may loose some balls. And make sure to hit them straight trees or water or both in play on almost every hole. Plus hole 6 and 12 are amazing holes
Not Bad
The t boxes need a lot of help. Very dry and Sandy. Some of the greens need help. The layout of the course was great. The carts were great as the staff was. For $26. On GN was good. I don’t think I would pay $37.
Great for beginners, budget players.
Beautiful course at a great price. Conditions may frustrate some experienced players, but had to complain at this price. Beautiful nature and wildlife, comfortable pace of play, but pro shop is a shipping container, and driving range is separate from the rest of the facility.
Course has potential
This was my second time playing this course. My first time was when the signature hole was immaculate and difficult. Since then they have cut down the low hanging limbs that made hole 14 so fantastic and challenging. It still has the distinctive tree line that makes it difficult, if not impossible, to cut the dog leg. But the Claw was missed. The greens and about 40% of the tee boxes were in terrible shape. One tee box, a par 3, was nothing but sand.
So much wasted potential
There are maybe 3 good/really decent greens. There is no water on the course. The pro shop is a shipping crate. It’s a great layout with no housing, few holes face a major university street, and plenty of nature that may or may not help your slices and hooks. Not sure why no one puts anything into it but hopefully that changes one day
Horrific
I grew up in Tampa and went to USF Tampa played this course many times in the 90s and early 2000s. This course is a complete embarrassment to the game of golf. The clubhouse was abandoned and falling apart. The course grounds were absolutely the worst I’ve seen. Most tea boxes were just sand. I can’t believe they actually charge to play this course. Until it’s bought out and redone I’ll never go back. Come on USF spend a little money on a remodel. We know you got the money
