About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2022.
Established in 1908, the Great Southern Golf Club overlooks the Gulf of Mexico as the oldest golf course in Mississippi. That helps explain the course's peculiar greens.
In 1999, Great Southern Golf Club was renovated by Brian Curly, who took pains to keep Ross' square greens and still satisfy the USGA's specifications. The greens are minuscule, undulating and hump-backed with deep swales in the middle of some and wild, unexpected slopes in others.
No. 6, for example, is a 250-yard par-4, which appears easy enough, but there are big oaks on both sides of the fairways, a small, elevated green that slopes sharply left to right and bunkers left, front and behind.
Great Southern Golf Club measures 6,278 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 117 and a 69.7 USGA rating. The course features three sets of tees for different skill levels.

Used to be Great.
This course was destroyed by Katrina. Lost 300 trees & clubhouse. Surrounding neighborhood was also destroyed, and hasn't recovered yet. They do not have the play to upgrade the course. Greens are not great. Fairways are ok shape. If in Biloxi, I would play again.
For $35 I was not expecting a resort course. It met my expectations.
Great Southern Golf Course
This may be the oldest course in the State and its looks like it! For 42.00 its not worth it. WAY overpriced. We can always play The Oaks for the same price and get a better experience. This course show be a 20.00 -25.00 based off of 2 THING !
Staff was great.very nice..
Fairways were OK,......The Tee boxes and Greens are awful. Mixture of sand and grass and some tee boxes had no grass, All the greens have crab grass and weeds....like if you went in your back yard and cut grass as low as possible just to make a green. Carts were great...wont be back again until we hear different...very disappointing for the price.
Great course
Very nostalgic. The history is worth the play. The fairways kinda shaggy but no complaints. Very nice course over all would play again. Staff super friendly
It was just ok
I understand it was a historical course , BUT being that, the upkeep on it is not one of such. The tee boxes were terrible and some holes, you couldn't tell the fairway from the rough. Also there is no driving range or real warm up area. If asked to play there again, I'd probably pass on it!
Fun round
Course in much better condition than when I played a couple of months ago. Staff was super friendly and even gave me a more discounted rate than what was on Golfnow because of a Thursday special rate. Will definitely be back as many Thursday’s as I can.
Coming along
Although the course is restructuring their finances the course is fairly good condition. Pleased with the progress
Not worth the money
Course is not in very good shape.some of the tee boxes are like hitting out of a sand bunker would not recommend this course for a vacation person to go play
Get away
I played just nine holes to get away from wife & mother in law. The staff was very friendly & gave me an earlier tee time than what I booked to get me ahead of a larger group. The course was very nice and forgiving for my bad shots even though it rain very hard the night before I played
Fathers Day gift
Have played better and worse. Have heard the Gulf Coast courses are alway in great shape. Greens were not but the rest of the course was good!
Course in poor condition
This course was recommended to us while we were golfing in Florida by someone who had not played it in many years. It turned out to be bad advice. The weather was fine. All the people were met were friendly. The course layout wasn't impressive but had a couple nice views of the Gulf of Mexico. No elevation changes. The greens were in terrible condition with shaggy un-mowed grass and many bald spots. Fairways were also in bad condition. My wife and I have golfed in nearly every state and this one of the worst we played. Would not recommend this course to anyone except beginners who just need a cheap place to learn the game.
A fun old style course
The course could use some rain but is still very playable. A very unusual layout as you play the first 8 holes then cross a railroad track, play holes 9 to 17 re-cross the railway and finish up on 18.
Great scenery on the Gulf.
Great views, but poor conditions
Fairways are really poor, tee boxes lack grass. Greens are ok. Just not a good value for what you are paying.
Not bad at all :)
This place really embodies southern hospitality and golf. Perfect for the casual golfer and even those who don't play that often. Beautiful view of the ocean since it's right on the beach and it's the oldest golf course in Mississippi so it's worth playing at least once just to say you did. Price was pretty fair for what you get everything considered. Would definitely recommend to anyone.
Disappointing
Grass in fairways still dormant, and greens had been sanded, so the course wasn't at it's best. Greens are very small and raised, so difficult to hold. Course is in poor condition and needs maintenance. Course is historic, so I wanted to check it out. Other courses in the area may cost a bit more, but worth it.
Southern Gem by the sea continued
For as much rain the coast been getting this course holds up well.plus the lay out is great n wide open.like it better Everytime i play it with my buddies
Southern Gem by the sea
Course is faitly friendly to average golfers like myself n buddies.we played this course every winter we come down to Mississippi.
