If you come to Arizona to play desert golf, forget about Ocotillo. Ocotillo is a refreshing change of pace from most of the Valley's courses precisely because it isn't surrounded by desert. The White Course is the most unique of the three. It has only one par 5, and the water is a factor on just five of the holes. But it also has the best hole on the property -- the 479-yard, par-4 ninth, which used to be an easy par 5 but is now a treacherous finishing touch. The Gold nine is a devilish test and not just because water comes into play on six of the holes. The greens have a lot of slope in them and are difficult to read. And some pin placements are brutal; hit a downhill putt two feet past the hole, and it might roll down into a swale and 30 feet by. Uphill putts, on the other hand, are extremely difficult to get to the hole, if for no other reason than Ocotillo's greens aren't as fast as some of the Valley's marquee desert courses.

Never expected...

Tee time 9:11

Made the turn and looked to check the time cause i knew it had been a while...going on 3 hours to play 9 holes...called the pro shop they said they were sending marshalls right away....no marshall 30min later and we were still on the same hole....never did i imagine ocotillo would let it go this far....

Lucky for me the pro shop took care of me since i ledt afyer 11 holes 3 and a half hours into my round...beware of slow play here....

Bring back Troon

Five hours and never seeing a Ranger is BS. On line it says "off cart path" and starter who got starting order messed up said "a couple holes" may be roped off. Virtually half par 4s and 5s were roped off. Love this course but it seems whenever a course goes away from Troon management quality drops.

Wet and muddy

Gold course was ridiculously muddy and wet. Just off every green was mud. Also gold and blue course bunkers were wet and clumpy. 9 on gold literally had standing water in bunker. Sad how the conditions have gone down hill over last 10 yrs

Az Lakes Golf

Course is challenging due to water and sand. Course was in good shape with a couple fairways dry and hard, but overall really nice. Staff is very friendly and course amenities are great!

Great value

Great value course and a nice change from desert courses. A real variety with the three nines. Had to pay for range

Balls this year, pretty sure they were included last year. Overall I really enjoy this course.

It was a very good course in very good condition, but be warned most holes have water. Of course this adds to the beauty.

What a Great Course!

Beautiful course; lots of water to keep the challenge up but also manageable for less skilled golfers. Conditions excellent for overseeding season. Blue course was excellent; White course was fairly good but a little behind the blue; we did not play the Gold 9.

We will definitely come back here - and the price was also terrific! Don’t miss this course when visiting Scottsdale-Phoenix area.

very nice course

The course is very nice and in great shape. Pace of play was a little slow(4 1/2 hours). Also we were told it was 90 degree rule, but there were a number of holes that were roped off and we had to walk from the cart path.

One my Favorite

Ocotillo used to be one of my favorite courses. Seemed to have taken a step back last few years. I played in a summer league for a a bunch of summers. . Watched it slowly trend downward. With the Mickelson group taking over and the overseed complete, it seems to be regaining some of its luster. This is the second week in a row I’ve been out. All three courses are now open with the white being the last and cart path only. My only negative was over the summer they shut down all three nines to do from what I understand was some irrigation and drainage overhaul. Wish they would have used that down time to fix some of the teeboxes. There’s a few that are crowned and almost impossible to get a good stance on your tee shot. But overall the course is in beautiful shape out of the overseed and well worth the $40

We were supposed to play the blue / gold but got stuck with blue / white because a large group of club rental players showed up late and backed up the course from the start.

The blue Course was great the white course, not so great - it just opened from overseeding and was a huge disappointment, but we knew that when we were given the option of a 5 hour round behind the hackers or a 4 hour round on the blue / white course combo.

We also missed the golf board rentals they had last year. They were fun.

Put this on your bucket list

I'm a local and usually take advantage of one of many summer golf passes (We Ko Pah, Troon, etc) and have played many really nice golf courses across Phoenix and Scottsdale. Ocotillo is one of those courses you want to play as the layout is challenging yet fair with water in-play on many of the 3 nine-hole courses (Blue, Gold, and White). The course was in perfect shape, the greens were rolling pure and the tee-boxes were nearly perfect. Put this course on your bucket list, you won't be disappointed.

As usual, a great course.

Great "after overseed" conditions. Will only get better with time but in great condition already.
