Ocotillo Golf Club - Gold/Blue
About
The Ocotillo Golf Resort sits on 185 acres and features lush contoured fairways that flow gently amid patches of mature trees, vibrant flower beds, pretty waterfalls and numerous lakes.
The Gold nine is a devilish test and not just because water comes into play on six of the holes. The greens have a lot of slope in them and are difficult to read. And some pin placements are brutal; hit a downhill putt two feet past the
hole, and it might roll down into a swale and 30 feet by. Uphill putts, on the other hand, are extremely difficult to get to the hole, if for no other reason than Ocotillo's greens aren't as fast as some of the Valley's marquee desert courses.
Two holes stand out on the Gold: No. 5 is a 212-yard par 3 with water running down the entire left side; and No. 9 is a 468-yard par 4 with a carry over water from the tee -- water that dissects the fairway about 50 yards short of the green and water left to the green. Par there is a great score.
Ocotillo's Blue Course is a watery grave; water comes into play on eight of the nine holes. It's not overly long but there's so much water the length becomes irrelevant. The best hole may be No. 1, a 590-yard par 5. Big hitters are faced with the classic risk-reward: Do they lay-up on their second shot or try to fly a tributary that splits the fairway about 50 yards short of the green?

Good course except for bird poop
This is a solid course and somewhat easier to get on than many. The main drawback is the amount of bird poop on many holes. It was the worst I’ve ever seen it. They really need to do something to control the coot population. Otherwise a good course. Has a nice outdoor patio to enjoy a refreshment after the round or get a bite to eat.
Do not be fooled, play elsewhere
Trust me when I say this, DO NOT PLAY HERE! Save your $150. Unless you’re over the age of 60 and hit it about 160 off of the tee. Way too many janky holes and layups off the tee (even on multiple par 5’s) I’m talking 7-8 or so holes that you have to lay up off the tee on due to water throughout. Total Mickey Mouse gimmick course. The staff was friendly, was kind enough to charge us $20 for range balls that the starter said were free and clearly were there for everyone. Course conditions were absolutely brutal. Appear to be understaffed outside and overstaffed inside. Bring your hammer for the tee boxes (rock hard no joke) tee boxes were also shaggy and had divots from everyone laying up on every hole. Fairways were also shaggy and lacking attention. The greens rolled ok minus all of the bird poop. Bird poop everywhere, be prepared! I’m a 10 handicap and golf 3 times a week and I never leave reviews or complain. Our entire group felt robbed. $150 per person to play a goat track full of poop. Seriously, save your money and go just about anywhere else for the money.
Dear Govers,
Thank you for taking the time to share your visit with us, Ocotillo is a challenging track that requires course management strategies to navigate through all the water. We do apologize for the bird poop in certain locations, the maintenance team is working hard every day to minimize the negative impact to the golf course. I will share your review with the team, and we hope you will give us another chance in the future.
Have a great weekend.

Good course. Lots of water and sand
Fun course! Good shape and good pace despite lots of play. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners because there is a lot of water and sand....unless you bring a snorkel and camel.

A golfing first
Played this course for the first time. Lots of water but it’s fair. The greens are large and have lots is angulation. The pace on the first nine was slow and a marshal stop by three times to update us. They made a slow group ahead of us speed up and then skip a hole. They were asked to quit after nine holes and refunded their money. We played the second nine in under two hours. I have never played a course where the marshals actually did something for the good of the rest of the players. I would play there again in a heartbeat.

Terrible Condition
I've played this course occasionally for over 20 yrs. Ever since Arcis took control of management the course has consistently gotten worse every year. Poorly kept sand traps, dead areas on greens, poor greens keepers, hacked up tee boxes and a driving range with required hitting of lousy quality mats. Several greens were striped with dead kill from leaking mowers and previous pin plugs sinking 1/2" below the putting surface.
They now have ball washers only on select holes and no ball washers on carts.
Simply cheap lousy management and no one seems to care when you bring it up. This course, which USED TO BE one of the premier courses in the area, is now nothing more than a HACKERS OVERPRICED DOG TRACK.
A perfect example of CHEAP ownership. I'll play anywhere else at any price and get a better value. What a waste of a good course design and my 4 hrs.

Potential for a great course, needs attention for the drive if not close
We played "Blue" and "White". The staff from the pro shop, starter and on course was great! Its important to note that we played in January and our first round of the "Blue" 9 was a bit disappointing as the course was over-run with geese and ducks and their waste. From a design perspective, there were water hazards on many holes which made it fun to navigate, but found that sometimes even driver would get you in trouble with things you could not see from the tee box. The "White" nine holes had many great holes that were fun to play with the best being the 9th or our 18th, with a back to front sloped green that required a carry over water for your second shot if you were able to deliver a good drive down the right side of the fairway.

Target practice - bring balls
Course is a very unique layout with water hazards on virtually every hole - a rarity in Arizona. It's target practice - I hit fairway woods off the tee more than my driver. The white course was very easy - ended up shooting my best score of the year there.
Conditions were typical for this price point in Arizona. Tee boxes were beat up, fairways were sticky painted grass, rough was dry dead grass. The most frustrating thing about the rough was how it wouldn't hold any balls up - ended up losing 2 shots that would have been stopped on courses that maintained their rough. Goose poop all over, tons of birds on this course. Greens were very solid, just full of ball marks.
No GPS in carts. Ball cleaners every ~6 holes. No towels to wash off balls. Practice range was mats only. Our playing partners cart shut off on hole 18 - ran out of battery. No food at the turn - drink cart only had snacks.
The wait at the bag drop was too long. Check in was too long. There was no ranger on the course. The starter doubled as a guy working the bag drop.
We had a frost delay but the course was up front that it would be a ~30 minute delay and we were off maybe 20 minutes after our scheduled tee time. The course was packed and we waited every shot for the group in front of us. Still ended up having a 4:15 round which wasn't terrible.
The course would not give singles their own cart, so I was paired up with a gentleman who would constantly park the cart in front of our playing partners hitting their balls. We had a twilight time and since there was a frost delay, he was always making comments about how we needed to "push the group in front of us" (they were waiting too). He went off on 1 hitting into the group in front of us, and sped down the fairway without waiting for our playing partners to join - causing them to hit into us. Thanks for forcing us to share Ocotillo, really made for a memorable experience.

Water and geese everywhere
While one of the prettiest courses in the area, it is overrun by geese. After the significant number of water hazards, geese are the next biggest challenge. Bird droppings from tee to green. It might be better later in the year, but in January the bird dropping left me feeling dirty.
Dear u2961644,

Love the course
I love ocotillo. Probably the best winter value in the area. If you are a “sprayer” of the golf ball you may want to go elsewhere. There iw water everywhere. I didn’t count, but probably on 15 or 16 of the 18 holes we played (they have 27 holes). Course was in good condition and pace of play was good. We waited on the group in front of us on every shot of every and still finished in under 4 hours.
Now for the bad - it was cold and windy - 18 MPH wind with gusts up to 25 according to the weather app. It was a difficult day. If it’s reallly windy and you havent played in awhile either: go elsewhere or bring lots of balls. One grandson lost 15 balls and the other about 10. It was a poor choice of course by me for kids that havent played in 6 months…Oh well, it paid for the balls. :)
Dear Corey4652891,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a 4-star review, Ocotillo is a great layout with challenging water obstacles. Add wind to the equation and there is an opportunity for some lost balls. Ultimately we are extremely happy to hear about your love for Ocotillo!
