Lookout Mountain Golf Club at Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort receives distinctions: Golf Digest placed it among the top 450 U.S. public courses, and it regularly features among Arizona's best 25 golf course. It doesn't hurt that the golf club regularly hosts eye-catching affairs like the Harmon Killebrew Invitational, the Royce Clayton Charity Classic and the Phoenix Suns Scramble. The golf course itself offers lush greens that entwine with the Sonora Desert's terrain, which the golf club says it carefully preserves, and features 18 holes of championship golf in tandem with magnificent scenery and plenty of challenges.

There's a fairly good chance that golfers will catch sight of a quail or coyote out on the Lookout Mountain Golf Club at Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort, and management asks that layers give the critters the right of way. In order to ensure golfers' shots go straight and don't snag in a cactus or chuckwalla, the club offers both individual and group glf lessons. This is also a place to enroll in the Hilton Golf Academy.

That's before the round at the Lookout Mountain Golf Club, though: Afterward, mosey on back to the 19th hole, called the Pointe In Tyme, for the drinkables and eatables.

Much Too Crowded

This just wasn't any fun to play. While it was very hot out, that wasn't the issue. At one point, think around the 10th hole, we had no less than three foursomes sitting at the tee box, and we had been backed up the entire course. What I understood from the group in front of us, was that they has a group in front of them with a child playing, and they were playing very slowly. Somewhere on the back nine, the child stopped playing, but the parents continued to play just as slow as they could. Took 4 hours and 45 minutes to complete the round, nothing short of ridiculous. I won't play here again, I don't like playing when people are running up my backside. The views are amazing, but beyond that it just isn't worth my time to go there, these guys are more about money and packing in as many as they can and less about quality of play.

Koosemano,
Thank you for taking the time to review Lookout Mountain Golf Club. We apologize that we were not able to uphold our 4:18 pace of play on the 4th of July. Being a holiday, we were rather busy, but we do use 10 minute tee time intervals as opposed to some neighboring courses using 8-9 minute intervals.
We do hope you will give us another try as our guest. Please email matt.nagel@hilton.com with any other concerns or if you would like to come play Lookout Mountain again.

Very good course that could be great

I was very pleased with this round that I booked through Troon Advantage through my home club. The only 2 negatives is the starter let a 5-some go out in front of my 3-some and the bunkers are worse than the last 2 municipal courses I have played (1 back in Dallas and the Encanto 9 here in downtown Phoenix). I am normally a good bunker player and these were pitiful in that they were compacted dirt more than they were sand bunkers.

Now that I have the negatives out of the way, let's talk about the positives. The greens were in excellent condition, and the tee boxes, fairways, and approach areas were all immaculate. Overall, given what I saw in reviews for other courses in the greater Phoenix area and their costs, this is a good value if you can access it via the Troon network at a discount over the published rates.

This is not a walking course, which is why the 5-some in front of us was so slow. Had they all been on carts, it would have moved faster, but as it was, we still finished in a little over 4 hours.

We were warned by the starter to watch out for snakes, but we didn't see any. We did see hundreds of rabbits and even a couple of coyotes as it approached dusk.

Jekyll & Hyde course

First six and last few holes were mellow; middle 9 were nuts -- crazy elevations, pretty views. No GPS in the carts, and the golf shop and facilities were antique. Still fun, esp with a hot deal.

Deano

Nice course, really nice staff, front was a good pace but the back was totally backed up, the tee boxes need to be leveled out, still a great course though.
