San Tan Highlands
About
San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

Great Course
Was cool and very windy so the course was empty. Finished in 2 1/2 hours. Greens were great course was great.
Old Johnson Ranch is in rough shape
I gave this course another chance since it changed to San Tan Highlands. I wasn't impressed. The front 9 cuts tightly through a housing community that leaves little to the imagination. The course conditions were very dry and lots of patches that easily could be manicured with effective results by a regular maintenance crew. Narrow rolling fairways and dry areas made it a long day, especially when you're backed up to a 5 hour round. No Marshall to speed up play. Then you make the turn and you get the mountain views up and down. It would be nice if it was well taken care of but its not well maintained. Some blind tee box shots that give you zero hope of finding fairway unless you have course knowledge. They got you out there in the blind. Good luck! It is a long drive from Phoenix or Scottsdale and definitely not worth it. The price wasn't great for the conditions. Tiny hard greens and fairways. Tee boxes uneven and chewed up. Where is the maintenance crew? This could be a prestigious course but you can tell nobody wants to spend any money for upkeep. I play a ton of golf and this was a disappointment.
Need Course Knowledge
Thank you to my new playing partner for telling where the trouble was on each tee shot because I've had a hard time navigating the course. The carts do have GPS so you could survive. The golf carts are really nice by the way. The back 9 was really fun to play with the views. The course overall is a little dry and tired. The ground is hard and you get more roll. The bunkers have no sand. Narrow fairways so definitely move up to a tee box that's is right for you or you will hate golf afterwards. I had to watch 4 guys play too far back and struggle all day. It was painful to witness.
First Time
The course is beautiful and in great shape. The staff were great to work with.
Good condition and worth the drive even through road construction from the city ldg
Fun to play and cart was stocked with one bottle of water but no drinking water on the course at all except from one or two bathroom faucets.
You could use one cart girl per 9 holes for refreshments
Horrible pace of play
Group ahead of us was a hole behind group in front of them. Marshal was called by our group and group behind us but never did anything about it.
Terrible pace of play - no marshall and proshop didn't care
Greens were very good, fairways good, bunkers - absolutely no sand - more like gravel/concrete.
Pace of play was horrendous. Started on time and within 2 holes was behind pace due to slow play in front of us - no marshall to be seen. 5 hour round with a 150 start time - finished in the dark at 7 pm. Proshop didn't care when pace of play was mentioned at the turn. Had a cart of 3 young teens with loud music drive through our group on a golf cart (they were not golfing) and swore at us for trying to have them wait for us to tee off. All in all - not worth the $ or time to play the course - especially in the afternoon.
Always a great time
This course plays amazing. Can challenge both the high and lower handicap players.
Nice condidtions on the greens and fairways
The green were a little slow from my perspective. The starter was very friendly. The pro shop staff was ok but did not offer any information about first tee direction or where the starter was located. Cart girl was excellent, covered the course well, worked backwards to make sure everyone was served, We saw her 3 times which is excellent.
Pace of play
This is course is overpriced the pace of play needs work especially during peak playing hours. The bunkers is in need of better quality sand without pebbles and rocks. Chipping green needs more attention, however, putting greet, driving range and staff is friendly and accommodating.
Starter
The "starter" was unhelpful in cart deployment and treated young people in the group with sarcasm based solely on their appearance. The group was unsure why this was done and thought a review worthwhile due to the unusual customer experience..
