TPC Scottsdale - The Stadium Course

About
Designed by Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf, The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale was purpose-built to host the PGA Tour's Phoenix Open, and it has done so since 1987. Designed with high drama in mind, the venue is well known as one of the most exciting and fan-friendly in all of golf, which includes a thrilling finishing stretch that begins with the risk-reward 15th hole. The course plays to over 7,200 yards from the tournament tees, but golfers who play the course during their Arizona golf vacation will find the layout has more forgiving fairways than many other area desert courses. The TPC experience includes one of the most encompassing practice areas in the destination, as well as grand clubhouse that includes the Toro Restaurant and Rum Bar. TPC Scottsdale is also home to the Champions Course, which plays out of a separate facility nearby.

Horrible condition
I’ve played this course previously and it was well maintained- this time it was below the level of a municipal course, I actually had to take relief from a tractor tread just off the green. After playing Grayhawk, WeKoPa, Troon, Quintero….. there are too many other well maintained courses in Scottsdale to waste the greens fee on this one .
Fun
Very dry, shocked how dead the grass was in the rough. Greens were great. Staff was great. Overall good experience.
Great Course
Course is a lot of fun. Somewhat of a challenging layout. Green run fast but true. Don't be above the hole.
So disappointed
Booked a time when we went to Phoenix for a 3 day weekend. I was really looking forward to playing here-especially after seeing it during the WM Open. Paid 300.00 per player but that was okay for us. It wasn’t okay to pay that and take 5 hours to play a round. We got stuck be home 2 groups for a bachelor party, with the 2nd group having 5 guys playing. Starter said they were already watching them to speed them up…this was prior to us even teeing off.
I asked an employee about letting 5 guys go out on hole 2 (after a 20 minute hole) and he replied that he 100% GUARANTEED that 5 guys weren’t playing and he was “on top of it”. As soon as he disappeared all 5 guys were playing (and we took a few pics of it but it isn’t worth my time to show them here). At exactly 2 1/2 hours into the round we finished #9 and I happened to run into the same employee at the halfway house and I expressed my displeasure with a 5 hour pace, to which I was told I was wrong and that everyone was only a few minutes behind pace (4:25 pace they say there), but I informed him that we teed off at 9:00 and it was exactly 11:30, so unless math has changed , we were on a 5 hour pace. I was told they track the carts inside, not on the course…nice answer. I also let him know at that point I GUARANTEE that all 5 guys were playing regardless of what he told me previously. The course Marshall (or course ambassador as they call them I think) actually did watch all 5 guys play and put a stop to that which made the rest of the round more enjoyable on a course that I had high hopes for but felt more like a fraud… shame on me for high expectations I guess.
The facilities and staff were great from the Toro restaurant to the course. The course was in great shape and very challenging (especially the front 9)! No straight putts! Cool to play where pros play and gives you a better perspective just how good they are!
Golf Trip to Scottsdale
Took my son's on a golf trip to Scottsdale and included TPC Stadium course on our list of courses to play. The stands for the WMO were still up and being taken down. It was very cool to see them up and to play 16, 17 and 18 with the stands in place. Course is tough. Great shape. Facilities are top notch. Pricing - high. It's nice to play once. I have played it twice now because my son's wanted to play it but we likely won't be back as $430 plus $30pp for a required caddie is high. There are many more courses around that you can get a great golf experience for less money.
Fun to Play Where the Pros do
Excellent course to play, not as pretentious as a country club. Everyone we met and played with was very friendly and happy to be there. The weather was amazing. Cart Path Only was no problem. Only lost one golf ball into someone's imaginary martini (into the stands). We just had a really fun time playing here. Definitely a bucket list course, highly recommend.
Stadium course
4th time playing the course, 2nd time with grandstands up. Amazing course to see with grandstands up. Forecaddie Frank was amazing, great reading greens and getting yardages since it was cartpath only right before the tournament. He also took care of putters unlike the last forcaddie Sergio who put a ding on the face of my new Scottie bashing it around with other clubs in his hands. Would give a 5 star review except the guy at the range was completely unprofessional. I hit a few balls, went to the putting green to chip and putt then was told there’s no chipping area to practice due to the tournament. Fine. Went back to the range to chip some balls and was promptly berated for returning to the range to chip. Tried to publicly shame me by saying “You hit balls, went to the putting green, now back to hit more balls? What’s your tee time?!” We still had over 20 minutes till our tee time at that point. I paid $1200 for my son and I to play there and don’t feel like I was treated properly by the range attendant. He was also throwing empty bags of balls from the hitting area to his golf cart like he was irritated to be there. I’m not new to golf, low-mid handicapper that’s been playing 30+ years. I’ve played most of the great courses in the US. Course was great, Frank and rest of staff great. Range guy a complete idiot. TPC can do better
Nice course. Much nicer courses in the area.
Finally played the stadium course. It’s nice. Bunkers in great shape. Fairways were ok. Greens were fast. There’s nothing super special about it without the grandstands from the WM. 16 looks and feels totally different obviously. I would likely not play again because there are so many courses just as nice or nicer across the valley for half the price - Wekopa, Quintero, Wildfire Palmer, Ak Chin. Staff was great.
