Editor's Note: Course closed in 2018. See The Phoenician Golf Club listing.

The Desert/Oasis Course was the Phoenician's first 18 holes, which were later joined by the Canyon nine. The aptly named course may have desert surroundings but its numerous palm trees and blooming flowers will make golfers feel as though they've been transported to a tropical destination. Although all three golf courses cover only 150 acres, none of them feel cramped. Any lack of length is quickly forgotten after playing the creative challenges of the layout. The golf course offers plenty of variety that make it appealing to low and high handicappers alike. Dramatic elevation changes characterize the Desert nine, providing the breathtaking views that have led it to be the most requested course. The Oasis nine is memorable as well with water coming into play on six holes and a unique moat of sand on the par-4 finishing hole.

Great Course

This is a short course, but has all the bells and whistles. One of the top 3 courses my group and I had played with few people in front or behind us on our time on the course. Beautiful views and perfect playing surface!

Fun And Enjoyable….But….

Let’s start with the good.

The golf shop was great and the folks who checked us in were great. We laid down our clubs near the bay drop and they were loaded on a cart that was funny equipped with GPS ready to head to the range where there was complementary range balls.

The fairways and greens were all nicely mowed with very few dead spots. Greens rolled smooth and the rough were short and thick giving nice lies just off the greens and fairways.

Overall I would say the course condition was a 7/10. Pretty solid for a course that gets a ton of play. Also, the GPS was a must. There are a number of blind shots and bunkers to navigate so have accurate GPS built into the cart was really great.

Now let’s talk about the not so great things….

First, the range was a ways down the road from where you check in and the tee grounds on the range were fairly beat up. Not a huge deal, but it would have been nice to hit off more lush grass when warming up for the round. Secondly, there were a large number of unrepaired pitch marks on the green which is really sad considering despite that the greens were in fantastic shape. Third, there are a number of blind shots which made it difficult to not hit into the group in front of you, as well as, be hit into by the group behind you. If pace of play was not an issue, maybe this wouldn’t be on my list. But that brings me to issue number 4.

The pace of play on the back 9 was equal to a 5 hour round. Which is no fun at all. There should have been better marshaling being done to keep the pace of play to 4 hours or less.

Finally, the course layout was aweful. Tees and greens were very spaced out at times, and although there we good signage leading from one green to the next tee, it definitely hinders the character of this course. It doesn’t not feel as serene as you would hope by the photos given online. Sadly this course is a typical resort course that seems squeezed in by its surrounding as opposed to beautiful desert/mountain golf.

All in all I would say if you don’t care about those things, and want a course in solid condition, friendly staff, and don’t want to break the bank, this is a place is one you can and will enjoy.

Desert Getaway

Awesome resort course. Not going to kill you. Beautiful surroundings. Only complaint is that I accidentally left my breakfast sandwich because I had to rush to tee off. When I went back to get it, it wasn't there. The person working at the course restaurant didn't seem to care and at those prices I wasn't going to buy another one. 😒😒

Great course, beautifully landscaped, good value for the money but the pace was 5 1/2 hours!☹️☹️

Love the course but the marshal was not doing his job!! It took a ridiculous 5 1/2 hours to play the course!

Very Plush Resort course with a phenomenal staff

Am I going to give this place an “Over-the-top” review? Yes I am. It’s a resort course in Scottsdale that backs up to Camel Back Mountain. The Entire staff goes out of their way to make sure all the guests are having a fun time. The value far exceeds the costs. It’s not the most difficult course in the area and it’s fairly short from the gold tees. Houses line most of the holes on the front 9. Lots of home/condo construction adjacent to the course currently can be a small distraction. Definitely could not walk this course so carts are a must. Those are super small issues.. so otherwise, this one is a real jewel

Beautiful Golf Course.

Great course, great staff. You think it’s a lot but you get to play a course with pristine fairways, painful roughs and smooth fast greens. The course is only half the cost though. The staff hooks you up with as much bottled water as you need. Club cleaning, bag/cart setup and after play services. From the moment you show up you just get to enjoy a relaxing round with little care about your gear getting where it needs to be.
