Hillcrest Golf Club at Sun City West
About
Hillcrest Golf Club possesses a championship length course that offers a great variety of game options with five sets of tees. The course has a traditional design that features open fairways lined with trees, which put a premium on straight shots. The greens vary greatly with some that are relatively flat and medium sized and others that are quite large and dramatically sloped or multi-tiered. In addition to several sand bunkers, water hazards in the forms of lakes and ponds come into play. The signature hole is the par-5 13th, which has been touted by the Phoenix Gazette as being on of the best holes in the state. Hillcrest Golf Club not only has a dogleg around a lake, the hole requires an approach shot uphill to a green that is guarded by eight bunkers.

Great Layout, Louzy Condition
We started playing Hillcrest back in the late 80's. It was once a majestic course that hosted both Senior PGA Tour and LPGA golf tournaments. Over the last decade the course has fallen into more of a dog track with fairways exhibiting bald spots and bunkers more like rock pits. A creek that ran through several holes on the course was dry.
The course is located in the middle of Sun City West, a retirement community that has it own private Country Club, four regulation and three executive courses. This once fine golf course is now been reduced to sad golfing experience.
Solid course for the money
Recently coming from the midwest, this course is the closest thing I've found so far in terms of the condition of the greens and how they receive the ball. Instead of being rock hard and extremely fast, you can actually stick and spin the ball on your approaches. For that to happen though, there must be major watering going on, which shortens some of the rolls you get in the fairways and on bump and run shots.
If you keep the ball where you are supposed to - the condition is great. Anything off the beaten path or fairway -- there is some improvements to be done for sure. But you can't expect pristine when you don't hit the shot where you want it. The course played well, the staff was friendly, the range was in good shape, and the experience was great for the money. Will definitely go back!
Challenging and good value
Tee boxes were a bit rough, but a challenging layout with great greens. Good overall value.
Great round of golf
I enjoy this course. Enough challenging holes to use all your clubs. It’s fair for all levels and I can see the improvements being made. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely playing this again.
Bad course. Terrible condition.
Go literally anywhere else lol. Terrible condition all around. Terrible layout. At one point on a par 5 had 4 other carts in our fairways from other holes. So should tell you something. First Course I’ve ever been to that you can’t take alcohol on the course. Extremely backed up after 9. Got the back nine done in over 3 hours with the front 9 only taking 1.5 hours. Not worth 40$ anytime during the year. Play literally anywhere else
ok
fairways in good shape, greens real good, off the fairway pretty rough lots of bare dirt spots, no cart path just bumpy dirt , no beverage cart on a weekend
ive always liked the layout, and for what was charged in summer its ok . but definitely a budget course, you get what you pay for
Still Playable
Greens in good condition. Good rates brings out less skilled and golfers with no golf etiquette.
Great value
Course is in better shape than normal for this time of year. Still has the usual dead spots in some fairways and rough, but most fairways were in excellent condition. Greens were the best condition I’ve seen them in. I play this course 5-10 times per year and found it to be a great bang for the buck. Not the nicest course, but it was fairly empty due to the heat and we finished 18 in 3.5 hours not rushing.
Great design needs maintenance
The layout is great and it’s nice and long. Some challenging greens with tough pin positions. The pace of play was great last 2 days went out around noon. However, the course needs a TON of work. Fortunately the fairways and greens are getting water and are very playable but the rough and cart paths are a disaster. There is no signage or hole number / yardage which you would expect for a course that used to host tournaments in the past. Played the Hot Deal and it was well worth it.
Fantastic Condition for the $$$$$$
We were pleasantly surprised by the maintenance. The fairways were green, and putting surfaces were running smooth.
Sand traps could use more rakes, but other than that, we will put on our list to play, again, and again.
Nice, could use some work other than watering the crap out of
Nice course, I like the lay out but they need to water the course and not all the bare dirt.
