About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
Cahoon Plantation in Chesapeake originally opened with a 27-hole layout but it has seen a major transformation since opening. One of the nines was eliminated and the flat terrain was molded into a gently rolling championship layout. The golf course has mostly parkland holes but there are some that have a links-feel, guaranteeing that there's enough variety to please any golfer. The layout is mostly wide open with very few trees to obscure the views. Water comes into play frequently throughout the golf course and there are a few strategically placed bunkers as well. The 15th hole is Cahoon Plantation's best par 3. The green is well protected by bunkers and a small pond but there is still an opportunity for a birdie, which will probably be your last chance for one before you face the difficult closing stretch of holes.

A great day with sunny skies and temps in the low 70's so we could wear golf shirts. Course was in good shape but wet from rains we had the day before. Greens were slow and fairways had little roll. Played at noon and had no one in front of us until the 12th hole so that made it nice.
One of the Best Public Courses in Hampton Roads
Great course. Great conditions year round. One of a few courses with similar course conditions year round. Fast greens, green fairways, nice tee boxes
Love playin at Cahoon
Love to play at Cahoon. Keep up the great work you all are doing to make it an enjoyable course to play. Kudos to everyone involved.

Green fairways in the winter!
Nice course. Nice to play on green fairway grass in December. Most other courses have Bermuda grass and were all dead. Course was a little soggy but it is december. Greens were good. Played with another single and we finished in under 3:15. All in all a very nice golf experience.
This is the only course in the area with bent grass greens and fairways.
Very nice course but extremely wet. According to a member I played with, its due to the excessive watering by the grounds grew. The greens were very soft as were the fairways. Tee shots got no roll out and approach shot stuck. Dry this course out and it will be diamond in the ruff as the ruff is 3-4 inches thick.
Interesting Holes
Nicely laid out holes. Challenging with diversity. Construction in progress so a bit noisy and busy.
Great relaxing round
This is the perfect place to play a round and relax during an afternoon.
It stormed a lot the week prior, so it was pretty wet and soft. But overall it was pretty decent conditions.
Bent grass fairways were nice to hit from and well maintained. The roughs were pretty think and made you think about your shots.
The greens, on the other hand, were a little bit worn; I was hoping for a little smooth grounds.
A lot of straight holes, a little bit of water on a few holes, and some narrow fairways.
I'd go back if I lived near by!
Really slow play
I have played Cahoon a number of times and it is always the same slow play. They have a ranger that rides around and tell you how far he can hit a golf ball but cant seem to do his job and move slow players along. Instead he gives away golf ball to them. We were a two sum and had a 3 1/2 sum which was a little kid about 7-10 which neither of the adults had the courtsey to let us play through for we were a 2 sum. The ranger also didn't have the smarts to ask them if we could play through. iI though I would give Cahoon on more try and thing have not changed. So if you do not like rounds of 5 hrs and 15mins don't play Cahoon.
Sloooooow Play
We played as a two sum. It took us 5 1/2 hrs to play. There was a ranger driving around telling us how far he could hit the ball but did little to improve the pace play. So my advice to any golfer that hates slow play and a ranger who makes friends with 3 sums and 4 sums buy giving them golf balls instead of moving them along or suggesting to let a 2 sum play through. Don't play Cahoon. I have played there before with the same slow play and thought I would give it one more try and it hasn't changed.
Good course
I have heard a lot of hype about this course. I played it and it exceeded my expectations. Very nice course and had a lot of fun!
Good course.. Poorly managed
Had an 0848 tee time and did not tee off until 0912. Course allowed 2 twosomes to tee off separately in front of 3 foursomes, although the course has a published policy prohibiting this. 18 holes took over 5 hours.... Ridiculous !!
Course to wet from watering
Overall course is a nice challenge and good value for the money but they water the course too much. Had to clean mud off my ball on every green. Not sure why they are watering so much.
Excellent Course
I love playing at Cahoon. It is a very tricky course that makes you make plenty of risk-reward decisions. Their deep bermuda rough makes you pay for errant shots and the greens are top notch.
This outing was tempered a bit by what seemed like a high school golf team who were out ahead of us and really tore up the tee boxes. I've never seen deeper gouges out of a box. It's a shame because they are normally immaculate. Regardless, it's still a 5 star experience in my book.
The rough is rough
There is no reason that you should have 4"-6" rough entirely over the golf course. It not only lines the fairways but all hazards as well as every green. It looks as though the greenskeeper is trying to save money by not mowing. If you are getting ready for a tournament, maybe grow it up but not to these heights unless the big boys are coming to town. It is no fun losing balls because you can't find them unless you are standing right on top of them. Then, if you hit the green and it rolls a few feet into the rough, you can't hit the delicate shot needed to get it close. Can't believe that anyone would come back since it is the farthest thing from customer friendly or fun. It must be a new approach to golf.....drive your customers away.
Not what it used to be
This course used to be one of the best in the area. The greens are beat up. Fairways are better than most. For the money, just not worth it any more.
New to the area
Excellent course! Great afternoon round of golf and would definitely recommend to a friend.
SOFT FAIRWAYS AND FAST GREENS
The cousre was in great shape but you need to stay in the fairways if you want to score. The rough is the rough for lossing balls and adding extra club to get any distance. You will have sandfill your divots on every shot in the fairways. Good challenge.
Great Experience
Had friends in from out of town and they loved the course.
Good test for most amateurs
Doglegs, undulations, elevated greens, well-placed fairway and green sand traps, some water. Greens have good speed, but course requires some strategy to score well. One of best public courses in the Hampton roads area. Plays longer than the card yardage.
