Editor's Note: Course closed for business in May 2019.

ASU Karsten Golf Course features a Pete and Perry Dye-designed links-style course characterized by design features that challenge, such as Dye's mounding and bunkering - making it important to pick the right golf clubs if you don't want to run up that score. Big-name PGA and LPGA Tour golfers like Phil Mickelson, Billy Mayfair and Grace Park have all played this course.

ASU Karsten Golf Course offers several holes one could call "signature," such as the short par-4 fourth, the tough par-4 ninth, the daunting par-3 16th (248 yards from the tips) and the challenging par-4 final hole. The water on the left side is the reason this is called one of Arizona's most difficult finishers.

After a round at the ASU Karsten Golf Course, check out the 21,000-square-foot Sun Angel Clubhouse, which tempts players with its Southwestern and American fare in the Trophy Room.

One of our favorite Phoenix Courses

ASU Karsten, is easily one of our favorite Phoenix courses to play. The staff, pace of play, and consistancy of the Greens (Both on the course, and in the Practice area) are fantastic.

The staff is great, there are plenty of relief stations on the course, and the tees offer a great variety of play for all levels.

Off the closely mown areas, the course has been experiencing some uneven turf conditions. But being a Pete Dye course with large mounding, this can sometimes be advantageous.

I hope it stays open for a while to come. It will be sad to see it go.

ASU Karsten: Soon to be office space and parking lots?

The ASU Karsten Course has never REALLY been viewed by the local golfing cognoscenti as a particularly good track. Too many goofy looks and shots; inconsistent course conditions; pricing that has often been far too much for what is offered; a driving range that at one point went to a type of Cayman Ball for WHATEVER reason one can imagine and so on... While there ARE some good holes on the course (9 and 18, although they are MUCH better when played from the correct tees as opposed to the switched versions, which makes sense from the Death of a Golfer standpoint), for the most part this is a golf course that has not stood the test of time well and which is, in no small part, why the golf course will (???) become a memory in the not too distant future. At least that has been the thought for the past few years... and if not? One could literally play golf once a week for an entire year in the Valley of the Sun, never playing the same course twice and find oneself to be in a position where ASU Karsten was even briefly thought of.

Fun course!

I very much enjoyed my round at the Karsten. Nothing in particular stands out about the course itself, but that works both ways. Not a word bad to say about it! The pro shop is fun with all of the ASU gear. The bar has a good variety of beers and a fun staff. I appreciated my time out there and would recommend playing!

Loved the layout

Perhaps it was not the most manicured course, but it was fun to play. Fairways were decent, rough was not penalizing, and not great shape, some tee boxes were uneven (did not play the tips, but the next toughest), but I am a fan of Dye layouts and this typical of his style. Lots of uneven lies, big greens, challenging bunkers, and railroad ties everywhere. Cool knowing that this where the likes of Michelson, Casey, Rahm, etc. Cut their teeth on this track. Nice practice area.

Great course but green fees a bit steep

ASU is a nice course. The greens are in great shape and the course has a very fun layout. Good mixture of desert holes and water holes and short and long holes. The staff seems friendly. You will definitely see a lot of planes especially on the back nine like every second another one is taking off from Sky Harbor! Only complaint is that green fees are too high here especially compared to other courses in the area which are comparable.

Fantastic layout and design, a true players facility.

Not exactly the most bougie golf course in the Phoenix area. This place is a players facility. Course conditions are well cared for and the course has a variety of holes that will make you use just about every club in the bag. This Pete Dye design track is where the D1 Arizona State Sun devils golf team plays their home games. Just about any player will be impressed with its design and playability. It has a fantastic practice facility and staff is super friendly on top of everything here.
I was very happy to get the chance to play the Karsten course. Was told it's going to be decommissioned to build additional housing for ASU students which disappoints me as well as any other golfer in the area.

Playin' under the planes.

Always a fun course to play. Considering the age of the course it is a pretty darn good condition. Sand traps were a little thin in some places.

Great Value Dye Course!

Sparky Special online at $44 is a steal! Course is in good condition, greens in good shape. Par 70 layout is quirky (i.e. - back to back par 3''s w/ no par 5 on the front) but very challenging. Would be brutal from the tips. A few Dye trademarks like railroad tie bordered waste bunkers & lots of mounds hiding flags. One of the best values in Phoenix where rounds $100 and up are typical.

In wonderful shape

Greens rolled wonderfully, fairways were a bit soft but generally had at least some bounce to them. Really good conditions for late May.

Played alone, off the 10th tee, in about 2.5 hours. Played through one foursome and one twosome, saw no one else out there.

Awesome Course

Played here with my Dad and it was the first time for both of us. This course is played out in a links style with many mogul hills and bunkers, which makes it a bit difficult to play if you aren't used to it. I can say it was one of the most enjoyable rounds of golf I have ever played. The staff was extremely kind and helpful. The course itself was in great condition. 10/10 would golf again!

keep it strait or bring your periscope.

This course has very deep and tall mounds and moguls all around the greens and on the sides of many fairways. It is a great challenge and is fair. The par 3 16th is a must play hole and beware of the bookend finishing holes on each side the 9th and the 18th are as challenging as it gets to finish up a good side or round of golf.

Good course design

My adult son rented a set of clubs and he got a great set of pings. This course was well designed but the upkeep on the course does not match the conditions of other higher rated courses in the Tempe area. Also, the staff seemed annoyed to have to answer questions or even take the bag at the bag drop. One thing that I found annoying was that you had to hit balls off a mat on the driving range. I played on an afternoon when it was about 98 degrees and the cart girl stopped coming out after the second hole. Also, navigation on a couple of the holes was confusing. Overall, it was a well designed course and I would recommend it.
