ASU Karsten Golf Course features a Pete and Perry Dye-designed links-style course characterized by design features that challenge, such as Dye's mounding and bunkering - making it important to pick the right golf clubs if you don't want to run up that score. Big-name PGA and LPGA Tour golfers like Phil Mickelson, Billy Mayfair and Grace Park have all played this course.
ASU Karsten Golf Course offers several holes one could call "signature," such as the short par-4 fourth, the tough par-4 ninth, the daunting par-3 16th (248 yards from the tips) and the challenging par-4 final hole. The water on the left side is the reason this is called one of Arizona's most difficult finishers.
After a round at the ASU Karsten Golf Course, check out the 21,000-square-foot Sun Angel Clubhouse, which tempts players with its Southwestern and American fare in the Trophy Room.

Thought I Would Be More Impressed
I understand my play was in January and the course was not showing its best. But still, it just wasn't in that great of shape. I was really surprised at the condition as this is the ASU golf team home course. Still, I would play it again in prime season just to give it a fair chance. As far as the staff goes, the interior staff were very friendly and professional but I think someone gave all the cart guys and starters lemon and vinegar for breakfast.
Hot Deal and weather worked out very well
I've played ASU many times, and while I really like the course, the pace of play and price are usually less to my liking. This time the golfnow hot deal price was great, and the inclement weather meant the course wasn't busy so 3.5 hours was all it took for my threesome to get around. Good time all around.
Tough but fair course
The key is accuracy so stay on the fairway.
The bunkers are difficult and the greens are challenging. All in all an enjoyable course.
Just plain bad
Hidden costs not reflected in GolfNow pricing of $8 per person upon arrival at course. Extremely slow play (4 groups of golfers on hole #9!). Fairways and greens were in poor shape. Grass in rough was dormant. Geese were eating holes into hole #18 just feet away from clubhouse. No starter or Rangers were present. This course is not worthy of a visit.
Great course and service
Well designed so you see your hole, but not the ones parallel to your hole unless you spray. Narrow fairways with good lies, but moguls if you go left or right. Pace of play was about four hours. Greens very smooth, some difficult to read, challenging, putted true.
No marshal
Course is in good condition but the pace of play was way too slow at 4h 45 min. No evidence of marshal.
Rename it Sky Harbor Country Club
Disappointed in this place. Endless planes, a disgusting power plant belching smoke ... there are so many nicer courses that will give you a true Arizona experience. Hated all the moguls (thanks Pete Dye) which are better for skiiing. Old golf cart with a big hole in the side and no soil/seed mix to replace divots. Cut the bermuda rough, too -- it was hard to find balls hit just off the fairway. I'll never return. Phil Mickelson played here, whoopty doo.
Wheres the Marshall
Tee Time 1:24
Left the 16th hole at 6:00 because of darkness
Seemed like a drunk fest rather than a golf course with no supervision... really
After overseeding the grass was a bit long but in excellent shape as were the greens.... Pace of play ruined the experience
for target golf
If you like narrow fairways this one is for you. Not far from the airport so not a quite course plans flying over all the time. Otherwise it is a challenge and fun to play.
Good Course, Bad Location
The course was enjoyable, albeit only par 70. But it was the surrounding area that turned me off. A local power plant and it's power lines seen too often, busy streets too near some of the back nine holes. But most of all way too close to the takeoff path for the Phoenix airport and it's constant jet noise. But like I said, the course itself was very fun and fair to play.
Eye pleasing but tough
Course layout is great. The greens are in great shape and learned they were punch a few weeks ago but couldn't tell. It's a must play if you're in the area!
SGreat Course!
We really enjoyed our round, the hills are quite a challenge and narrow fairways made straight shots a necessity! Will definitely play again if the price is right.
Fun and challenging course
This course is fun to play with lots of interesting holes. The course plays longer than its stated yardage due in large part to strategically placed mounds and bunkers.
Great Layout tough from the Tips
Played Karsten the day after they opened up after overseeding. The course was in great shape, just a little shaggy and slow greens which would be expected after overseed. We tipped it out which would be normal but due to the lack of rollout out, the long par 4s of 460s and 470s and even a 490, played extremely long. Looking forward to going back when its hard and fast. We were the first out at 7:20 am and got around 18 in 2:50 which was awesome.
Just reseeded
Played 1st day after reseeding & cart path only. Played this several times and always fun.
Slow play and no sufficient rangering
I was part of a foursome held up behind a criminally-slow threesome for nine holes. By the time we made the turn we no longer had any desire to finish the round.
An interesting Pete Dye course that has unfortunately become a typical "cram them out there and don't supervise them" kind of public logjam on the weekends. I hope the course supervision reads this review and takes it to heart.
