Starr Pass

Beautiful location & scenery. Even though middle of summer - course conditions were below avg. Too many "rigged or tricked-up" holes - - especially when can't see fairway fr tee box or hit tee shots on par 3 over corner of private home (8 Rattler? black tee). When starter states "expect to lose 2 golfballs per side", it is not a positive beginning. Approach shots tore up greens as they were too soft. Need either GPS on carts so can tell where / how hole is designed w/yardage to & carry over ravines. OR, sign on tee boxes as to distance required to carry obstacles. Will not play again.

Patchy fairways and mud balls

Worse I’ve ever seen the course. Mud balls in the fairways. Bare lies in the fairway. Patchy fringes. Most greens are still good.

Don’t waste your time or money!

We played this course today. The course was in horrible shape!!! The fairways had more dirt patches than grass. Some of the tee boxes were lacking grass as well. Greens were in good shape albeit a little fuzzy. This was by far the worst course we have ever played. Additionally, we were shocked at the lack of customer service. At the end of our round, there was no one to greet us when we pulled up to the cart return area. After waiting for about 4 minutes, 3 employees who were the outside staff employees came out of the clubhouse. Not one of them offered to clean our clubs or carry our clubs to the bag drop area. They basically ignored us. We had to carry our clubs up to the bag drop.

After our round, we went into the clubhouse grill for a bite to eat and some liquid refreshments. Both the bar area and dining room were busy, but every unoccupied table was dirty. There was no hostess or servers around to clean them. So we left and took our business elsewhere. On a positive note, the starter, ranger and pro shop staff were helpful and friendly. The beverage cart girl was attentive on a hot summer day.

Don’t waste your money on a round on this course. It was in horrible shape and we will never play here again!

Nice Layout

The layout is great. However the fairways were terrible, and the greens were slow. I am sure during the winter months it is better. It is very mountainous with great views.

First Time-Nice Experience

Excellent golf course. We paid the summer rate of about $40 and the tees and greens were excellent. The fairways however had a lot of damage and there was a lot of areas roped off. There was grass near by so we just dropped. Had a great time. Will go back!

Challenging desert course

Starr Pass is deep in the Tucson Mountains and takes advantage of the terrain, leaving it much as it was before the golf course. Several of the fairways are split, cut by deep water trenches and have elevated tee boxes or greens. The foliage also makes it difficult to get a good look at the rest of the fairway or green. Keeping the ball in play means knowing where your lay-up will be. Unless you are a long hitter, getting to the green in two is nearly impossible with the hidden blinds and split fairways on all but a few of the links. However, it is more challenging than a generally flat course and the tees, fairways and greens are in good shape. Expect to lose some balls.

Good course

Played at 3pm. Finished in 3h and never saw anyone until the last 2 holes. Water available every other hole but never saw a beverage carry (saw one when we walked up). Got back and no one was around anywhere...pro shop closed, no attendants... Was just odd. Very much a target course, several carries even for forward tees. If you can't back off and play the smart shot (ie take an iron on a couple of tees rather than the driver because you think you can make it) then take several balls.

Great course

Stayed at the Marriott next to the course. Played at 10:00 on a Sunday morning. I was surprised that the course wasn’t busy.
We played in 3 hours!
We played the Rattler n Roadrunner. Great layouts. Fun to play. I’m a 6 and shot 79 with three lost balls. Tough but fair challenge. Just keep it in play and you’ll do fine.
I’d love to play it again.

So, I decided to do a solo golf day today, and boy am I glad I did. The course was perfect, the holes were challenging, and i had a blast playing 2 balls on each hole. Just go play, you'll be so glad you did.

Staff super friendly, nobody in the way, great day overall

Star Pass

The practice facility is one of the best. Starter “Eddie” is the most pleasant and helpful employee at the course.
Counter people weren’t quite up to the level of friendly, but were business like.
