DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge
About
Perched in the hills above Santa Cruz, DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge features plenty of elevation changes as well as tight, tree-lined fairways making this short layout anything but a cinch. The result of the tight layout, however, often translates into long rounds as higher handicappers look for their golf balls in the woods. Designed by Bert Stamps, the golf course opened in 1970. Conditioning is average, but DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge's green fees are a small fraction of its more famous neighbors.

Slow-Veaga
I like almost everything about this course except it's painful pace of play. In an effort to be friendly and open, they allow too many five-somes on this course. The course Marshall's (that you see often) never do anything to push the slow groups along and so a round that should take 3 1/2 to 4 hours to play on a relatively short track inevitably takes 5 hours to play. I once played the front nine in 3 hours... before I gave up and walked off the course. If anyone wants to know the singular reason for the death of golf - it's the laboriously slow pace of play.
No fairway
The "fairway" was not mowed having mostly not grass but clover ~3~5 inches long resulting in ball lost after hitting the center of the course or time-spending to find the ball. It also resulted in longer play time due to every golfer's effort to find the balls in addition to the cart on path only.
Biggest Rip Off Ive Ever Witnessed
For $84 twilight, this may be the worst deal I’ll ever see in my golf career. Started off the round with rude staff…. The course was just horrendous. I don’t think there was a fairway, only rough. The tee pads were more crooked than my bad knee. Genuinely, don’t come here. You may this is a joke, but go play Boulder creek twice or anything in Monterey. First time in my life, I feel like k have been violated.
Deplorable conditions
I play a lot of golf and have to say that the course looked and played like it had been closed and not attended to for months. $90 for punched greens, fairways that hadn’t been mowed in weeks, tee boxes with grass longer then tees and there was more sand on the greens than any bunker. They should be ashamed of the product they put out for the price they charge.
What a rip off.
Full price golf for a course that hasn’t been mowed in two weeks. Lost a dozen balls and 10 were in the fairway. A little warning about course conditions would have been nice before booking for $90. Will not be returning anytime soon. Same for the rest of the other singles in our group. Everyone felt the same.
Rough Course
This was the worst maintained course I have ever golfed in California. I get it has rained a little - but, it looked like there has been no maintenance to any fairways for the last year. I’ve never lost so many balls in the fairway in my life.
Overpriced
Played there yesterday and dropped out after it took 4,5 hours to play 13 holes. The course is in very poor condition. For a serious golfer it isn’t worth the money.
Conditions were bad
Course was very wet due to recent rains. Cart path only. Many shots would plug so badly you couldn't find your ball. Overpriced for these conditions. I would play it again if it hasn't rained for a month.
Thumbs up
I play Dela V as ll the time it's a good course lots of fun. Staff is friendly and helpful all in all I give this course a thumbs up.
Nice Track - Wet and Muddy Experience
DeLa can't do anything about the weather and understandably will rule cart paths only if the course is soggy. If you think the course may be wet on your day, I would call the course and book a walking time as a cart is the default billing on GN and offers no refunds once you pay.
Tight layout with up hill, side hill, and down hill lies
Great track! Gophers are winning right now on some holes.
Santa Cruz
Overall the course was very nice. I was a little unhappy that the par 3 tee boxes were quite sandy from overfeeding. The greens were in great shape.
Course condition
1. Aeration and sanding are expected, but tees should be placed elsewhere when sanding is done in the tee box.
2. Not watering a portion of the fairways greatly detracts from the quality of play. Santa Cruz received approx. double the rainfall last year! Is reclaimed (tertiary) water available to the course?
Aeration Warning!!
There was a warning about aeration. The Fairways were aerated, but the greens were not. they may have been a few weeks earlier? The green were not mowen=d! slow as molasses and bumpy as I have ever seen!
I played here many years ago.. will not go back for that price..
The resturant was closed at 4PM. sent is to the grill by the driving range. They were out of everything. no pulled pork, only premade sandwiches. My brother and I traveled from San Jose to play there. What a waste extreemly disapointed. Oh, and the ball mechine at the driving range ate $11 got no balls. ended up buying another bucket from second mechine, Told the Attendant who wandered by later. He said hit us up next time we will give you a bucket..
Might not go back..
A little more care please
Played from blue tees, tee boxes were not mowed at all and it was like teeing off from the rough. Not to mention excessive amount of sand all over the tee boxes.
Greens were like a great looking carpet which is the worst for putting, it was horrendously slow and inconsistent throughout all 18 holes.
I would definitely avoid this course for a while until it's back to the shape.
Great vibes
Had a great experience here. They were in the process of aerating the back 9 greens so it was like putting on a beach. Great course layout. The front 9 greens were in great shape.
Always a challenging track
Greens rolled great and smooth,(a couple had fungus and dead areas but pin placement wasn't near that).I understand the difficulties involved with maintaining a course on the hills compared to a flat muni course so I give them kudos for that. For the most part fairways were nice and tee boxes relatively flat. All in all a perfect sunny day getting paired with a wonderful couple we ended up having so much in common with. The couple we played with(Joe and Norda) were simply amazing and fun to talk to, and an inspiration for me and my wife.Maybe thats what made everything so incredible was playing with new people so friendly and easy going but it was a wonderful day all around.
