The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Spectacular views, in fine condition
I carried after booking through GolfNow. They had me play alone, which was fine and allowed me to look for both the first stray shots and the mulligans. Now problem with pace of play at all. A challenging walk for an old packer---sure got a workout--but beautiful wide fairways, and fast, often sloping greens. Bark mulch rough, and many new houses going up around the course. Clearly the feelings are positive around this place.
One of the best in Monterey
We had played Blackhorse a few years ago and liked it so much we came back the next day and played it a second time. Bayonet was closed for a qualifying round.
So this time we played Bayonet. It has been described as long and narrow, and that’s only half true. I am over 70 and play to an 18. Bayonet is long, in that there are no senior tees. You’re either playing almost 6000 yards or 5200- no combo to shorten the whites. On the white tees I played to my handicap on the front nine, and missed it on the back. There’s plenty of fairway roll, but I was wishing for some shorter tees. It really didn’t stress me though, nor did it detract from a fun round.
As far as narrow, I saw it as being medium width fairways filled with bunkers. I used to belong to a club that plays way narrower, but without the fairway hazards. A lot of holes here would allow wayward shots, some would not. To me it was more strategic than narrow. And the rough was not as penal as other places, it just was the short grass.
I want to give a shout out to Jake in the pro shop and Don the starter. Both worked at finding a gap on the tee sheet to get us out a little early. It was a great time on a beautiful course-played in well under four hours.
One thing that I noticed is that there were pitch marks all over every green. Really, people? Fix your mark.."?
Poor conditions
Paying over $100 per round you would expect the conditions to be great. No one racks bunkers here. No on fixes divots.
Course
What a transformation
It’s a good golf course now
Great value/Beautiful course
Have only played each Bayonet and Blackhorse a few times and this was the best condition thus far. While I got a great deal via GolfNow the various rates were at the level of lesser courses in lesser places. I don't play much so I got my lunch fed to me but well worth it. A beautiful place to play especially with the great weather on this day.
Although it was a difficult course I had a great experience. The course is beautifully maintained and staff was great.
Excellent staff and golf course!
Greeted by an excellent staff that answered all my questions in a very friendly way. The course was in excellent condition and provided great lies in the fairway and smooth greens to putt on. The views are great and the holes have character. All in all a great experience.
They could not find my reservation from Tee Off
I booked my tee time from Tee Off. It was deal time at 8:00am. When I check in the ProShop, they could not find my tee time. I showed the person in ProShop my confirmation email. Then, she game me the tee time for 8:10 am. When I check in the Starter, he did not get the updated my tee time. The Starter contacted with the ProShop, so we could tee off. I did not understand what happened This is not the first time they could not find my tee time. I booked deal time for Black Hose course one week ago. They could not find my tee time, either. They told me it was tee off problem. I do not know which side caused this problem.
A True Gem
My friends and I were looking to play somewhere in the Monterey area and glad we decided to play Bayonet. Its a truly challenging course that is well maintained and landscaped. We all had such a great time that we are already planning a future visit to the course. I would highly recommend this course for any golfer.
