Terrible condition
This course has a great layout,if it were kept in good shape it would be terrific, but it is severely neglected, sand traps are filled with weeds, greens are cracked, fairways dry and weedy, et.
Nice Setting, Terrible Shape
The course is in horrible shape. No sand in any of the
bunkers, greens patchy, fairways barely mowed, tee boxes are like hitting out of the rough and "hay-like" grass in the rough, mid-calf high. It has been allowed to grow back to wild, one par 3, #15 I believe, you cannot even see the green because the brush has been allowed to grow so high in the waste area between the tee and the green. This used to be a beautiful course. Now it will go bankrupt like Prince George Golf Course did recently. What a shame.
Make it a subdivision..it's not a golf course
A once beautiful golf course is now the biggest joke in the Richmond golf scene. How does this place stay open? What a waste of time to travel to this dump. I love the game of golf but I'm ashamed to say I went to play this place. Shut it down!
River's Bend
Won't repeat what everyone else has said, but, yes, the conditions at the course are laughable (they declared bankruptcy a while back and it shows). And we ran into a 6-some on hole 2 and ended up jumping them so that we didn't have an 7 hour round.
Instead of repeating all the negatives, I'll try to throw out some positives:
1. If you're a beginner, it's probably a great place to practice your swing without slowing the whole course down
2. Paid $14 on golfnow for it - would never pay more than that
3. The tee shot on 18 from the tips (up the stairs) is beautiful
4. Has some interesting hole layouts for sure that have gotten even more interesting as it gets more and more overgrown..
At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. Was it worth $14 to drink some beers and hang out with buddies? Probably.
Would I have been irate if I paid full price? Absolutely
Talk about going down hill.
It's been years since I've played here and I was hesitant to return. A friend of mine took a client there for a round and told me that course conditions were terrible. A few buddies and I decided to give it a shot anyway since it was a last minute round and not much else was available elsewhere. The tee boxes are something out of a horror movie. Hard enough to find ground to put your tee in without breaking it, but also not mowed. Fairways for the most part were ok but in several holes they were not mowed at all. The greens were the worst I have EVER seen in my life. You could 3 feet away and the ground would turn your ball in another direction. Thankfully I did not visit the bunkers but once, but I couldn't help but notice there was no sand in ANY of the bunkers.I am very angry that I even spent $30 to play a round here. Total waste of my time and money. Not sure what happened with this course but things have gone down hill. I'd also be angry if i owned a home next to this course, because I'm sure it drives the value of your home down.
Not maintained
I was excited to play the course, I saw it from the bridge and always wanted to play it. I saw the price was so low on golf now I had to play it. After getting there and seeing the course conditions, I see why the price was so low. The greens were in terrible condition and the grass in the fairways and tee boxes were poorly maintained. I will not be back to play it again.
Worst course ever played
This was by far the worst golf course that I ever played. They have not done any maintenance on this course for a few years and that is no exaggeration. The greens had weeds growing on them and they were cracking because they never get watered. What once were the bunkers were now filled with weeds and very limited dirt, all the bunkers were this way. The management has given up on the course. I do not recommend this course to anyone. I was very disappointed with this course, you could tell that at one time, this course was beautiful but it is apparent that management has given up on the course.
Needs Help
Rivers Bend is not even 25 years old but so much of it is worn out. No sand in any traps. The rough is unbelievably thick crabgrass that just eats golf balls. The lay out of the course is really nice and it has some excellent scenery. It could be an amazing venue.
Could be a great course, but it's below average
Lots of holes are overgrown, fairways are like concrete in certain areas, greens are in terrible condition. That being said, I paid $15 for 18 holes with a cart to play some pretty interesting holes with a beautiful view of the river, so I can't complain too much. #16 was so overgrown you couldn't see past the tee box (par 3).
Poor poor poor
This course is not worth your time. It's cheap to play but it's not worth the money either. Sad shape everywhere.
Awful
Other than the one person working there, nothing was good about this course. fairways were not cut, bunkers were all weeds, greens were torn up. it was like playing in a jungle. it is not even worth playing on any special deals.
You get what you pay for
This course, I hear, used to be amazing. Now if you decide to take the risk and play here it will shock you. Just about every aspect of this course is sub-par, from mowed grass everywhere, to mud patches all over every green. You imagine it, this place has it. Although it was pretty cheap....I do not foresee myself coming back here unless it's a day before payday and I'm down to my last penny.
Don't play here
I have played some "cowpasture" courses over the years, but this one takes the prize. The greens were spotty and cut unevenly. The rough and fringes hadn't seen a mower in about 2 weeks. You needed a jackhammer to get a tee in the teebox. They were also allowing fivesomes. Overall, a very bad experience. I recommend everyone stay away from here.
Bring Back the Glory Days
I recall the days when this course was listed as one of the top courses in Central VA. Throughout the years I've played this course about a dozen times. Being a very challenging course, this course required you to bring your "A" game to really score well. Over the past several of years the mismanagement of this course has caused this course to fall upon hard times.
For starters the course is in need of some serious basic maintenance. From cutting the grass in the fairways and rough to aeration of the greens, simple course landscaping management is a must. Fifteen out of the eighteen greens contained some level of significant damage. Although they current crew was able to find playable pin placements on these green, it still is a far cry from the previous manicured greens that greeted you in previous years.
From a nostalgia point of view it was nice to get around the course and rekindle with some of my favorite golf holes on the course. However, that was all overshadowed by the stark realization that this course is in a State of Despair.
Previously, my playing group and I use to affectionately refer to the Jordan Point Golf Course as a "Poor Man's Rivers Bend. Today the sentiment is reversed and River's Bend is just a Poor Man!
worst course in va
Rivers bend is a course where you can see the potential. Has some really nice holes, but worse kept course in all of va. Fairways are terrible, greens are even worse. The geese where pooping on at least four of the greens. Couldn't even putt on them. Will not play again unless things change. But I guess u get what you pay for. Hope someone buys club and does serious work to but my
Improvement needed
The course was not maintained very well. There are what you could call "grass bunkers", yet maintenance on them was poor to non-existent. The course was not groomed well in the slightest. A plethora of golf balls were lost due to the grass not being tended in the middle of the fairway, or around the play area. The grass bunkers are a result of the sand bunkers not being maintained, so there is mud and overgrown weeds in them. Not a course I would recommend.
Not a Golf Course - It's a FIELD
I rated this course challenging because there was no sand in the sand traps, just weeds. Greens are nearly gone, and the first or second cut did not exists.
We paid for 18 holes, but after 9 holes decided this was not worth playing.
Take this course of your list, it is no longer a golf course !
Buy a mower
Back in the day this was a $40-$50 course. It was lush and challenging. Now it is simply an un-manicured train wreck. As I played, I couldn't help but feel awful for the people who live in the houses surrounding the fairways. Their yards look so good with lush green grass and where the yard meets the course is like night and day. There are saplings and weeds growing everywhere. The grass is so tall in places that it is seeding. There are trees growing in the sand traps with no sand present. No water coolers. No beverage/snack cart. The course doesn't bring you by the clubhouse after 9 holes for a refresh. I will never play here again no matter how cheap the price is.
DON'T DO IT! WORSE. COURSE. EVER.
This is worse track ever! We lost at least 6 balls in the fairway! It is strictly crabgrass now and you could tell it was once a beautiful course. I went to talk to the starter who said he was the owner. I asked how could he keep the course in this condition and he replied that the cost of the course dictates the upkeep and thats why it is in the condition it is in! I couldn't believe it...then he said be owned other courses as well. In my humble opinion he is a crook for even charging to play this cow pasture. Whatever you choose to do don't play this course. EVER.
What a Waste!
I have played this course many times, but it has gone down to a pathetic level. The greens are horrible. The tee boxes are worse than my back yard. Several holes are so grown up that you have blind shots. We also lost two balls in the fairway. The worst part was seeing a great course go to an absolute goat track. I would suggest the staff that was sitting outside and waiting for golfers to register. Please pick up a weed eater and some weed killer and get to work on your course!
