Rivers bend golf course
Club house looked abandoned and full of rotted siding, paint peeling everywhere. The course was terrible with bunkers filled with stagnit water and weeds, fairways with knee high weeds. My backyard had more grass and better feel than that course.
A possible great course if maintained
horrible management of fairways, tee boxes and greens. Waited 30 minutes plus for carts because of a backlog of players due to no marshal ensuring standard play. Greens are rift with plagued grass which make it seem like the moon's craters. My lawn is in better condition then ten tee boxes which are not level or cared for. Fairways the same. Surrounding growth out of control and blocks many of your normal drives. A real shame since this could be a superb challenging course if maintained. Course managers have decided to neglect any sand trap and let local foliage take over . .
It was terrible
We had tee time at 11 they were out of carts so we sat around and waited for over an hour for other players to finish so we could use their carts,I've never been to a golf course that has ran out of golf carts.the course was in terrible shape the tee boxes hadn't been cut,the greens had divots the size of mountains and most of the sand bunkers had no sand
Sand Traps or Beach Grass?
The sand traps were overgrown and packed - grounds poorly maintained. The course was very challenging for a beginner, definitely not for the weak of heart, but probably good for an experienced player as far as challenge is concerned.
Nice layout - bad course
The course needs some serious attention. The tee boxes are non-existent, fairways are mainly crabgrass, clover and dandelions and the greens are like putting on the surface of the moon. The place needs basic landscaping like GRASS SEED!
One of our carts ran out of gas and was replaced promptly but still shows a certain overall lack of enthusiasm by the staff. I am from out-of-town and had to use a "rental" set which consisted of 80's mix/match clubs. Thank god one of the players in our group arrived late with an extra set. The club house had 1 bottle of Gatorade, a half dozen waters and half dozen domestic beers - at 10am.
The layout is one of the more challenging with water and woods on dog-leg holes that can relieve you of balls in a hurry. The course is in a fine neighborhood and it is a shame that it so poorly attended to - it seems like it could be a gem but not at all...never again.
Great piece of land with no grass or sand
This is the worst conditioned course I have ever played. Only grass in the "fairways" was crab, no sand in the bunkers and most of the greens had large brown spots. I have played poorly conditioned fairways before and not minded if the greens were reasonable. Even for $20 bargain price it was not worth the time or money. Great piece of land though on the James river.
The course is in need of work, but it is enjoyable to play
Course was not crowded, and the conditions were not as bad as expected. Some of the greens were in rough shape but it appeared they were getting better after the rough winter we had. Still a challenging and enjoyable course to play.
Poorly marked.
First time playing here. Worst issue was how poorly marked the course was. The book showing holes was hard to match up to the actual lay of the land. We had a beautiful day, which made it easy to look past the poor upkeep.
could be made into a good course
needs attention , no sand in sand traps just rocks and mud . needs mowing and greens need attention
Golf course needs alot of work.
Enjoyed playing the course, but greens, fairways, and traps were in poor condition. It is a fun course to play when the course is in good playing condition. The course needs a lot of work to bring it back to what is used to be in the past.
Not maintained at all
I wish it was better. Some of the tee boxes were dirt. The traps had zero sand. It was like they were letting it go. Goose droppings had not been taken off greens for days and all had small craters.
The setting is perfect. River..scenery and all. The staff and Jordan on the beer cart were very friendly....BUT and this is a VERY BIG BUT...the course was almost unplayable. So sad..... this economy is not being kind to great courses like this..
Sand traps nonexistant
Course conditions were pretty poor. The sand traps were overgrown with grass. Greens weren't horrible but not great either.
A sad waste of a formally great course!
This course has been disgustingly mistreated. The bunkers aren't even sand any more, the fairways and rough just run together, and greens are full of divots and holes. I would never recommend this place to a friend ever.
Great outing
After 30 years, I started playing golf again. This was a very challenging course and I enjoyed it. Although the course was not in the best of shape, it is understandable with the winter we had here in central VA., it still played very well. I found the staff very friendly and accomodating. We enjoyed the food in the grill and the service was very good.
I will be playing her again and often. The price is exceptional.
Very poor condition
Although this course is far away from it's glory years, it was still a decent course to play only about 1 1/2 years ago, but this time it was pretty terrible. Very disappointed and probably won't be back.
Friendly but needs some attention.
We had a harsh winter, and recent storms but the course needs some TLC. Bunkers mostly unplayable and wooden bridge has some rotten timbers. Greens are in good shape and the course layout is interesting and challenging. Staff are very friendly and discounted rates make this a good place to hone your game.
CASH Needed!
I played on this course 17 years ago the night before my son was born and loved it then! It was in great condition and well laid out… 17 years later, the course has run down, however if someone would put some financial backing into this course, it could/would be spectacular!!! The greens are in OK condition, the scenery along the river makes it special/ breathtaking, and even though you are playing along the James, you might think that you are playing a course in the valley with the variation in elevations.
Note – I had to select “yes” or “no” if I would recommend in order to post my review. I selected yes if you want a good deal and don’t expect to much. No sand in the bunkers, so we placed our ball back on the grass, no crowd even on a beautiful Sunday morning and the cart girl was great!
Again, this course only needs some tender loving care & “CASH” to bring it back!
Waste of money
Course is poor condition. Greens looked like pictures of Texas drought, cracked and brown. Fairways were the same. Total waste of money! Sand traps are actually grass traps that haven't see sand for years.
What Happened
I will be honest I have not played this course in 5 years. Not the courses fault but life in general being busy. Last time I played this place was beautiful. When I moved to Richmond in 99 this was the course to play. What once was an amazing course is now only a shell of its past. I am not sure what happened but I hope someone comes in and rescues it. The bones are there but a lot of work is needed. It was worth the $16. PLEASE FIX THIS COURSE!
An joke
This course is by far the worst I've played. We played it about 2 years ago and it was in fair shape today it was awful. The owner takes no pride in the facility. It was all weeds and dirt. No tee boxes except for markers. Not worth $23 we paid. Will play one more time only because we purchased a certificate from golf now prior to playing it.
