A course that used to be.
I played here back some 14 or 15 years ago and all i can say is that it looks better from the 295 bridge than actually on the course. Dont know what has happened but it is nothing like the go to course it was back then.
Bulldoze the clubhouse....
What a piece of garbage this is. Sad too, layout is good. I placed it under extremely challenging because it is unplayable in the condition it is in. So the issues...
- No sand in the traps. anywhere.
- Fairways are not mowed.
- Fairways are muddy.
- Fairways are basically yard grass and clay or mud.
- Ownership doesn't care. CLEARLY.
If George Emerson Jr. would only buy this place and give it the attention it needs.
Folks, seriously, don't go. It isn't worth 10 dollars to go play this. Just pass it by....
Cheers,
Rob
DON'T GO!
We were on our way to Myrtle Beach and knew this course is just off the Richmond by-pass, so we booked it. The course is in terrible shape. The bunkers are a joke, they have absolutely no sand. We actually lost a ball in one because it was filled with leaves from last fall. The layout is pretty good and was probably a very good course when it was built, but it has fallen into the wrong hands. It's a shame. We played it two times in one - first and last!
I knew what i was getting into
I knew what i was getting into, But the place is so close and cheap, plus im a golf junking, that is why i still continue to go there. Probably have already read about the poor shape of the grounds , but they didn"t have golf carts and had people waiting. Don't know what really happen that day if there was a lot of walk ins or just over booked, but seem like bad management or lack of. Then my brother went to walk 9 after work and it confused them, they didn"t know if he could walk, thought he needed a cart and didn't even had a walking price. Its all very funny to me, but its a local quick stop for me. If I was coming from out of town and burned gas and my time i wouldn't be so "lol" about it. thus the reason for my review
Good hot deal, but course was in bad shape
This used to be a top notch course. Now it is in pretty bad shape. The bunkers have more weeds than sand. Tee boxes are ln need of serious attention also. And the brush on hole 9 is out of control. But....... I guess that was why the price was so great!!!
the staf realley needs to be more friendly
the golf course could be a real nice one if it had some maintance.the layout is great, I do enjoy playing the course
Time to fix it or shut it down
Course is in the worst shape of any course I have ever played, it is a shame the course has such potential but is not maintained. The tee boxes and fairways have very sparse grass, and are not kept mowed. The bunkers do not have any visible dirt at all, I lost a ball on the first two par three's because I did not want to pursue them in the bunkers, the weeds were so high I was afraid I would not be the only living thing in there. The only redeeming thing on the course was the beverage attendant who was extremely polite and efficient. The course touts itself for having great greens....just because tehy are they only green thing out there doesn't make them great...they were also not kept mowed and played very slow.
Some great, Some not so great
This course has a very challenging flowing layout. From waterways to high hills, the design is fantastic. Staff was nice and food cart was attentive. Greens were slow and the course plays a lot longer than it looks. Many long Par 4s especially on the back 9.
With that said, you can easily tell the course is having financial difficulties. Bunkers have tons of weeds and are not taken care of, the cart we had needed some serious maintenance. The grass needed mowing and many of the tee boxes were in need of care. Although, I must say that most of the greens were pretty nice.
If they get some money and better management, this could be a 5 star course.
Never again
Stopped playing after 4 holes. The fairways were too long. Lost many balls in fairways. It would not shock me if they said they were closing down that is how bad it looked. Golf carts could not get up small his.
needs course maintenance
All the sand traps had major weeds in them. When you lose your ball in a sand trap and can't find it, then your course needs attention. The grass was not mowed in most places. Terrible course. Would not play again.
Pasture golf?
I've played on quite a few, "Pasture Golf" courses, and this one is not even up to that par. So much broad leaf on the fairways you can lose a few balls there. Roughs that are jungles, and sand traps that are overgrown and lack any sand at all. I only saw stones below the weeds. Have tried it twice in 2013 and will not return till the course management is better.
Sad as this location is a peach and could be a gem in Richmonds golf crown. As I have to enter a value, it gets one star that is undeserved as it should be none.
Very sad
This poor course has potential, but it's evident they are in dire straits. A few of the tee boxes look like construction piles...dirt mounds and rocks instead of grass...and there was no sand in any of the bunkers. More crabgrass than anything even on the greens, although they did try to keep at least the fairways and greens mowed to a decent level. One of the bridges on the cart path is a fatal accident waiting to happen. We were a little nervous about if they were maintaining the cart brakes because there are some pretty steep hills on the cart path, but survived. The restaurant was closed, and the cart girl had to go back to the clubhouse to get us hot dogs...when she made it around with them, they were wrapped in Saran wrap (sorry, we don't have foil), and could only offer us ketchup (sorry, no mustard). They were edible, however. Sad, because you can see what a nice course it could be, but at this point even for $19 with cart, we can find better conditions.
Great value & fun w/ right expectations
Didn't see a grounds person all day and it shows. Course is an adventure to put it politely. Bunkers grassed over, fairways like your backyard & 50/50 chance of finding the ball in the rough.
This course has good views and challenging holes. We felt a little lucky the golf cart made it through 18 holes.
If you have the right company and use the $$ you save on the greens fee toward a couple Bud's, you will have a blast.
Great challenging course, needs lot of maintenance
This course is very challenging, but it really needs a lot of maintenance. The greens were in great shape, but the fairways, tee boxes and rough simply had now been mowed at all. Hitting from the fairways was like hitting from the rough. The bunkers were all overgrown with weeds, They had a drop rule from the bunkers due to lack of maintenance. With the need for mowing, the whole time we were there playing, no mowers were in use
The course has seen its better days!!!
The course has seen its better days. I have always loved the lay out of this course but it seems to have been neglected with care over the last couple years. All the sand traps have been let go to fill in with grass. The greens were spongy with weeds coming through all over it was hard to hole a put over ten feet. The Tee boxes grass was a little long. The course has so much potential sad to see what's became of it.
Worst condition of any course I've ever played on!!! The owners should be embarrassed taking people's money to play there. Just terrible!!
Sand traps were mostly grass...fairways weren't mowed. The rough was impossible to locate your ball in...only the 3 holes nearest the clubhouse had been given even minimal attention. There were no water coolers out on the course! The greens were average and that was the best part of the course...tee boxes weren't mowed! You could lose your ball in the fairway. I'll never play here again! And it used to be a pretty nice course.
Golfnow.com should remove them from their list of courses. We played with 2 ladies from NC who were sorely disappointed as well!
The waterfowl were interesting.
The Greens and bunkers needed work in August. I saw a few people playing.
Bad Shape
Course is in rough shape. Greens aren't too bad, it's a cool lay out, just poorly maintained!!! Fairways were the length of what would be expected from the rough...the rough looked like it hasn't been cut in weeks...if you missed the fairway, good luck finding your ball. Course has gone down hill a lot. They were cutting fairways with a bushhog.
A little work can lead to greatness
Fine course and enjoy the scenery, but maintain grass a little more and weed the greens might help. If you miss the fairway, you most likely lose the ball where there is high grass in rough area. A little maintenance will go a long way
, but it's one of the great deals to play in central, Va
Cheers tommy x
Don't Bother - Extremely Bad Shape
The course is in bankruptcy and it shows. My wife and I both lost balls in the fairway, the bunkers had no sand just long thick grass that swallowed the balls. We had to wait an extra twenty minutes for a cart to come in.
It is a shame because the layout isn't bad and could be a good golf course again if someone has deep pockets.
