Needs help with greens
Played here 10 years ago and it was a first rate course. Super excited to go back. Unfortunately the greens were less than ideal. Many greens had invasive grasses and it really seems like they left them grow out shrinking their size. I could be wrong there but looking at the bunker positions and the size of some of the greens, it looks like they had to be designed bigger. Tees and fairways were good. I would rather see less than perfect tees and fairways with great greens. Will try somewhere else local.
When its breezy swing easy!
Another Lake County course situated in the once huge Wekiva River Basin. Black Bear’s front and back 9’s start at its highest elevations and then steeply drops into a basin. The vistas are magnificent and wildlife abounds. The greens are usually slick and quick but today they were on a 9.5 stimph rating. This no doubt due to the recent rain. The greens are well manicured as the tee boxes and fairways are. The course is forgiving so you can spray it around a bit. Be careful though because it is well bunkered from every tee to every green. Most greens are elevated but 5 or six greens are flat or you are hitting downhill. When the wind kicks up as it did today the course becomes very difficult. Club selection is always very important but in 12-15 mph winds as today you best be precise. The clubhouse is well decorated with a variety of roadhouse foods, a good selection of beer, wine and spirits are available. Very good practice facilities are available and even in winter the rates are very reasonable. I have played here 50-75 times over the last 10 years and course remains consistently good. I highly recommend playing Black Bear. I guarantee you will enjoy what you find.
The course was in really nice shape. The greens rolled nicely and were receptive to spin. Fairways were also in great shape. Only quip is the bunkers. Would go back in a heartbeat if it weren’t so far was at. We played twice and made a day of it.
Great course, beautiful day
Love the practice facility, course conditions and layout. Restaurant is one of the best at a golf club in the central Florida area. Great staff.
Where is the starter and ranger??
Went off on schedule and played the front 9 in under 2 hours. Got to the back and had 2 groups jump in front of us. Must have started on the back and with no starter to stop them it took over 2 1/2 hours to play 7 holes!!! Never seen a ranger to ask what the heck was going on. We finally quit after 16 holes.
I play a lot of course’s in the area and have not seen it this bad!
Excellent shape, grass is perfect.
Love playing this course. It is extremely challenging, yet it still gives you a break if you mishit a shot or two, or three. The staff and food staff are over the top friendly. This course even gives you a workout , even though they supply a golf cart. Lots of hills and valleys to manuever.
fun course. good pace of play .very good condition.all the shots you want! and more!
Fun course. Mix of hole conditions. Some really need some work while others were well maintained. Not a very aesthetic course, however it has a lot of elevation change to make it both difficult and enjoyable.
A great course
It was windy but cool. The course in great condition. I love this P.ete Dye design with elevated small greens. A brilliant challenging course.
Staff was friendly. Range was decent. Course was in excellent shape. Greens rolled nice with decent speed, maybe a 9. Some greens are very small. Course is pretty wide open. Wind will make the course difficult. Bunkers are huge and deep. Some are a little washed out. Undulating fairways, so different lies. Played as a single and took my time, still finished in 2.5 hours with a 1 pm tee time.
Bunkers seriously washed out; greens and fairways in good shape!
This is a fun course if you like a challenge - lots of hills and bunkers. After getting into a bunker on the front nine that was seriously washed out at the edges and had black moldy stuff, decided to treat any like that as ground under repair! Some bunkers were fine. Fairways were in good shape; greens decent but a little slow.
The reservation said GPS included but none in carts.
Tee boxes good, fairways good, greens good but a little slow, climbing up and down hills when you don't land in fairway or on the green not good but that's not courses fault now is it.
Used Golf Now and got a "Hot deal" price during mid day. While it was hot, a breeze came up at times and made it more bearable. Course is in very good condition compared to others played this summer. Staff is always accomodating and friendly.
Deserves more visitors
Played many (more expensive) courses and this is the best value we played. Great hole design with tight greens this is a very nice test of golf. Tee boxes and fairways are excellent and greens recovering well from aeration though on the slow side. Had a nice beer in the friendly clubhouse to round off a great day. More golfers should take a trip out here rather than some of the overpriced tracks in Orlando.
