A little dark, but black bear in a dark tree, hole # 6...appropriate for Black Bear Golf Club! Photo submitted by relivgolfers on 09/29/2013
Black Bear
Great course with lots of topographical changes. Plays tough in the wind. Have always enjoyed playing the course. However, conditions are not up to par. Greens were fast, but tufts of grass adversely affected puts. Areas around every green need work. Chipping was very difficult given the poor conditions. Will be back for another round in the Spring.
Slow play
Course is in good shape for winter, some of the greens have some form of fungus but playable. Fairways are in decent shape with not too many tight lies. The course, itself, is fun and challenging
Fast, tricky, well-protected greens
Water comes into play only on the 18th hole, when a long carry is required on the second shot to an extremely narrow green. The rest of the greens, many of them elevated, are protected by deep bunkers left and right. The greens are also fast and rolling, making even two-putts a challenge. Greens are in good condition, as are the tee boxes. Fairways are in good shape for a Florida winter.
Almost every Green is elevated
I like this course for its rolling fairways but do find the greens are over elevated on several holes. Very challenging for amateurs but all in all it’s a fun course to play. There’s not a lot of grass around the some of the greens making chipping challenging when the green is so elevated. They need to do something with the 18th hole as there are a couple of options to play to two different greens. Possibly eliminate the first green and create more fairway to the back green or something. All in all it’s worth the trip to play it.
Not the value for the money
We paid $75/pp to play this course. It has a nice design tee to green, but it was not worth the price to play as the greens were not in good shape. All of the greens had been fertilized or sprayed with something to emulate grass (not sure which) and had very little grass. At $75:pp, the course should be in top condition! Very disappointed.
Not up to their usual standard
I love this golf course and always look forward to playing it, but not this time. The course is in poor shape with little grass on the fairways and greens. The pond on 18 was over flowing its banks onto the cart path and fringe. Pace of play was slow even with rangers roaming the course. As my title says not up to their usual standards
Fairways and pace of play
Course needs attention , rangers need to move people along
Beautiful condition.
My friends and I always enjoy playing at Black Bear. This week it was predicted to be a bit windy but the winds were about 25 - 30 MPH and constant so it was not as fun as we hoped. The course is in excellent condition overall and we plan to play again soon. We will watch the weather and be more concerned about the wind.
Course conditions
Best conditioned course around. They have done a great job!
Typical Winter conditions
Almost did not go after reading some reviews. I found the conditions normal for Florida in winter for courses that do not overseed. Greens putted quick and true. A few had some issues, but it did not affect play. Fairways had some grass, but lies were tight. Rough was not high. Will definitely go back.
Typical winter conditions
Course is typical of non overseeded courses in Winter. Fairway grass not growing, Tees and greens had grass. Greens putted fast and smooth, but were hard. Do not know why the bad reviews. It was a good value for $30-60 price range.
Black Bear
We have played Black Bear for many years. We love the course and although the course was not at its best, management has always done everything they could to keep the course at its best.
Great course!
Black Bear is an excellent course,, best in the area!
