A little dark, but black bear in a dark tree, hole # 6...appropriate for Black Bear Golf Club! Photo submitted by relivgolfers on 09/29/2013
Needs work
Have played this course 3 years ago, it wasn't very good then and now its worse, you can see they are putting some work into it with sod in some places, the greens were surprisingly okay, just be ready to roll your ball to get a decent lie in the fairways
Course is terrible condition!
I have played here before and enjoyed the challenges of this course. It tests your course management skills. However, our 4some playing this course on 13 January for $50 dollars each seemed too pricey for nothing special. Only the teeboxes and the greens were OK. Everything else is barren soil and patchy grass areas. This is isn’t winter related, this condition is care related. They aren’t taking care of the course. I will not go back to it until after I hear decent reviews from other players.
Great course, but not for a beginner. Tough pin positions.makes it very tough. Don't think they were fair as the had a lot on the crest of slopes.
Not for your beginner
Course was very tough with the pin placements. Not fair and very fast. But we had a great time with the challenge.
Felt obligated to warn
Well greens were aerated and there was no notice in the booking! Fairways were fair but weeds and dirt anywhere else up tot he green.sure not a 55 green fee course. Was told they didn’t have the budget to compete with the course I compared them too! Oh well. If it was convenient then maybe 25 round but not a dollar more!
Fair and Simple Assessment
I've been playing this course for years. It has certainly seen better days.
Simply put, 4 star layout with 2 to 3 stars in ALL other areas. Honestly, it's in the same shape as all the other courses in the area (red tail, eagle Dunes) which is great at all. Greens are packed damp sand with no grass creating predictably horrible rolls. Fairways are mainly dirt and dried grass. More to talk about but you get the point.
$25-30 is a fair price to pay. Anything more will leave you disappointed.
Great course....staff so so .....
We were a 4 some and played pairs best ball. the course was great. It was out first time here.course was lacking restroom stops. There were a few porter potties. (the ladies did not approve).... the course was not busy at all which was great. pro shop was very well stocked. On our turn the desk guy rushed us and said we needed to pick up the pace. which we were not playing slow for a 4 some as we were play pairs best ball. We were still right behind the pair that was right in front of us. Other than that is was good. we liked the elevation changes and hilliness of the course.
Course has potential, but the staff will ruin your day more than a 3 putt on a par 3
Course layout was a nice change of pace from your traditional flat and straight Florida golf course. There were plenty of giant hills and deep bunkers that made the course challenging. However, the greens seemed like they were under major repair, and no one seemed to care about repairing their divots which made putting, un "bear" able (haha, new nickname for the course, "unbearable"). If you hit the green, just pick your ball up. The course could have good potential a few years from now when they get the greens sorted out, but the price they want for such a unkept course is not worth the effort. The staff is another good reason to pick a different course. Everyone seemed to act as if it was a private course and it felt like the "public" folks on the course were treated very poorly. Although at the same time the course did not carry any private course amenities, just some stuck up locals treating people poorly for being on their golf course with the owner being the most rude of them all. Judging by all the available tee times on golf now they have driven all their busiess away with poor customer service. I don't see this course being in business for much longer without some serious changes.
Hate to say this …
Wow - hate to say this because I really like this course and staff but … I found this course in really really poor condition. Weeds tee thru and on green. Greens unputtable due to weeds that were longer than the grass - bumpy doesn’t describe. It is a fun layout. The challenge normally comes from hitting the greens with approach shots which is fun. Should have just stayed home or just gone to a practice range for the day.
Narrow, raised and undulating greens
This course has some great potential but is not living up to it right now. The course is friendly off the tee boxes but the approach shot is what will always be difficult. The greens are some of the most undulating and narrow that I have ever seen. A few greens show signs of new sod and they were not leveled very well so putting through this new sod SUCKS!! I wish the grass in the fairways and rough was a bit thicker because there are no really good lies unless you roll the ball a bit before the shot. I will give it another shot know I know my way around a bit to see if my initial impressions were too harsh.
The greens were not aerated (last Aerification was in April 2023. We always notify our customers prior to booking and then for the next 2-3 weeks after) . You may have seen some spiking that is a maintenance tactic that we do approximately every three weeks. Whereas this MAY be visually noticeable, this action in no way affects the roll of the ball. This is a necessary process that keeps the greens healthy and to allow air and moisture into the ground, especially this time of year.
