Fairways were in good shape but the greens were not the best. The greens had small marks with no grass and seems evident that the ball marks are not being repaired. I've seen worse at other courses but to be fair to those who are contemplating playing at Birkdale course conditions need more than a star rating and require some context.
Decent Value and interesting Course Design
Usually one of the cheaper options around Midlothian so I always take a peak at tee times before I book anywhere. Course conditions usually fluctuate for no apparent reason. Some years the greens are terrible, but this year seems to be a better year. If it rains, good luck trying to find a dry spot to hit your ball. Pretty poor drainage overall. Bring plenty to drink/eat, as typically you won’t see a cart coming around, even on busy days/weekends. Still, because I live so close to the course, as well as don’t have to drop $75-$125 to play a round, I keep coming back. Course design is also pretty unique, so fun to play around. If you’ve never played here, give it a try.
Sliding downhill for sure
So birkdale is always known for a couple things, pace of play is always slow, that’s simply due to the amount of players usually here. The second thing is the layout, fun and challenging in my opinion.
Here’s the rub.
No Marshall. I played behind a 3 some that look, frankly sucked. Left, right, shank, chunk, etc. I waited on every single shot except the last hole because the cart guy ran them in. I was walking by myself. They knew I was waiting for them every time.
Greens were poor, lots of dead spots in the fairway.
And a cardinal sin for ANY golf course is not providing water on the course during summer months. That just should never, ever happen. There was no water and no drink cart.
The staff are always friendly, I couldn’t care less really. They can be unprofessional and the course can be amazing and you’ll forget all about them.
“Off course amenities”? What does that even mean? 🙄
Still, a fun track now and then.
Birkdale
Decent course if you are just looking to get in a round for a good price. Staff is friendly. Played around noon, and tried two different carts, both seemed like they were almost out of juice. Didnt think I could make it through 18 holes, but did. Nervous crossing streets due to carts being so slow. Had just heavily sanded the greens, and bunkers were rough. Hoping some nice weather gets it back in a little better shape.
Greens are spottier than a Saharan cheetah and harder than hunter Bidens crack rocks. They need some time to recover. They also need to relearn the value of making people fix their divots then I’ll go back. Until then no thanks
Honest Review
Neighborhood course, not a fancy layout but definitely a few great holes. (Favorite holes are #4 par 3 and #9 par 5) Tee boxes, fairways, rough, greens are all in exceptional shape. Very pair pricing for what you get! I have played this course over a dozen times since moving here from Florida last year and will continue to go back.
Great course!
Great course and is definitely coming along well! Couple of bunkers on the back 9 had standing water, but that’s probably pretty normal considering the amount of rain we’ve had. Greens played great. Staff is always awesome.
Great course for the price!
Loved everything about Birkdale. Very friendly staff and fellow golfers. Only con was they didnt have any glizzys ready for a mid round snack but it was on a Monday so I'll give em a pass for that! Can't wait to play here again soon.
Good deal
Got to play here on a hot deal which was awesome. Some soggy spots and some dead spots throughout the course but overall not the worst conditions. Front nine was a little slow but back nine was mucchhh slower. We were waiting to tee off at every hole and even had people hitting into us at one point. Can’t exactly fault the course for that though. Interesting layout with long drives in between each hole through the neighborhoods. I would golf here again if I had another deal
Very good course
Very nice course and really like the layout. The pace can be very slow sense they are very busy most of the time. But very well kept and staff is awesome. would be nice so get some updated payment options but that’s just a preference.
Great course to play
Was an excellent course to play. Was a lot of fun, played middle of the day and wasn’t pressured at all with pace of play. Only issue I have which is many courses around the area is the sand traps, not much sand at all in it. Overall though, would definitely play again and most likely will soon.
What’s up with area around greens!
I have always loved this course; however, I was surprised at how awful the area around the greens were! This is supposed to be a high-end course but it looks like a poorly kept municipal course, specially around the greens. I sure hope they are putting in work to improve them. I am at the stage of finding a club for membership and was considering this one; but, now I will entertain others that have reached out to me. Not a good look right now.

Course was so stacked we teed off 20 minutes late and the starter had the audacity to tell us they were on pace for a 4 hour round. We easily hit that before half way through the back 9. Waited on EVERY SINGLE TEE BOX, many of which were chewed up - just bare dirt - they didn't even attempt to fix them. Fairways were also in rough shape. And good luck trying to hit a chip from next to the green with huge clumps of who knows what kind of grass growing sporadically. Greens were slow and appear to have some sort of disease or invasive grass growing in them. It's a real shame this course isn't in prime shape right now given the cooler temps and ample rainfall we've had for this time of year.
