A Perfectly Decent Course
With the unfortunate demise of Cannon Ridge GC, Lee’s Hill becomes Fredericksburg’s go-to public course with good conditions, pleasant layout and excellent value for your money.
Like many other courses in the area that use Bermuda grass, Lee’s Hill is still recovering from a long, harsh winter (by Virginia standards anyways) and while the grass for the fairways and rough is just now starting to grow in, I found the overall playing conditions much better than similar courses down in the Richmond area I live in. The greens in particular are in excellent shape: lush, green, and already nearly completely recovered from the previous aeration. The bunkers too are well groomed, the fairways are still short but also even, the tee boxes are just ok.
The layout here is pretty good with plenty of shot-shaping to be had off the tee and occasionally on approach. Several water hazards will make you think twice and bunkers abound but are rarely very penal. A nice touch are plaques sprinkled throughout the course informing you of your proximity to old Civil War sites. Where else can you play golf and stand in an old confederate battle trench (not at the same time, the ditches are not in play).
The staff is very welcoming and gave me the option of pairing up or playing alone (that’s rare these days) and there was a marshall that kept pace of play moving along pretty well. It took 30 minutes to complete the first two holes but things picked up and I ended up finishing in less than 3.5 hours.
The off-course facilities seemed pretty standard (I didn’t see the driving range from the putting green but I assume it was around somewhere). I paid just $27 for an afternoon weekday round on GolfNow and that makes this course a very good value, I would definitely recommend to anyone not looking to travel too far out from Fredericksburg (The Gauntlet is another great course but a bit of a drive, especially with any kind of traffic).
Greens are terrible. No water distribution on course.
Honestly the worst greens I have ever played. I played well today but putting was just a guess....EVERYTIME. I feel like I probably left 5-6 shots out there by just having to attempt to putt.
No water. Terrible. Just because the weather is cool doesn't mean water shouldn't be available.
Worst course I’ve ever played
Honestly, this was the worst course I’ve ever played and the things I did like about it was the layout and the staff being super friendly. The greens BARELY had any grass on them and the fairways were also extremely out of shape as well. However, the lady in the snack bar said that someone sabotaged the greens by pouring the wrong chemical on them a couple years back so they couldn’t help that. Overall, give this place a couple of years and it might be a better place to play. I got 3 holes in and I almost quit playing but I kept on going just to see how I would do. (Honestly, if I didn’t love the game of golf and I wasn’t super committed to playing, I would’ve honestly quit yesterday.) Yeah, this course wasn’t it for me for the most part.
Never again
This used to be one of the best courses in the Fredericksburg area and now it’s gone completely downhill. The fairways were not trimmed, the sand traps are not even sand, it’s just mud and rocks, and worst of all the greens were some of the worst greens I have ever dealt with. The place is overall depressing and it seems that nobody there cares and the passion is no longer there. Unless this place can turn it around and bring it back to its glory days, I will not be returning.
Greens Improving
As always, staff and fellow players are friendly and helpful. It shows that the crew are hard at work, as the course is improving. Greens are still rough, but getting better.
Thanks Lee Hill!!!
Worst Ever
I have played this course when in pristine conditions and poor conditions. This time the course was absolutely terrible. Fairways were a mess, greens were like putting in my back yard. The entire course was a trainwreck. I hope something happens to make it better....maybe turn it into Condos? Staff is still great (but I wonder why they stay).
Greens - ugh
Almost every green was a bumpy nightmare. Got to the point that anything within 4 feet was a gimme - making those putts was just pure luck.
More important things
I'm a newer golfer. I'm the bane of the regulars existence. I'm the idiot who can lose 9 balls in 9 holes. I've got 4 months experience and a ton of ambition. Lees hill is why I'm improving.
The greens are kind of a mess. It takes 5 seconds of review to see that.but where lees hill shines is the people and experience. I've never met a miserable person, I've never had a bad staff interaction, I'm considering spending good $$ to be a full member here. I'm good on some rough greens to.have a welcoming experience, with chill people just enjoying golf.
So yeah, stay away (wink)
Awful greens
Unfortunate that this course isn’t well maintained or managed. Such a fun and challenging layout.
Greens are by far the worst I’ve played on, just give yourself the putt once your on the green. Reading the greens won’t matter because of how bad the patchiness is.
Pace of play was awful, no marshal to manage the pace or say something to those taking long.
On top of that very over priced for poor conditions and torn up golf carts.
Save your money and go elsewhere.
What greens?
The greens were so bad that we had to play 2 putt limit. The bunkers were equally as bad. I know this isn’t a the off season but it’s please.
Greens are in really rough shape right now
I'm sure they will bring the greens back. Great bunch of people there.
Poor Greens
You can't sell tee time without telling people about the greens not 1 or 2 but all the greens are bad , they could at least put the cup on the best part of the green. Couldn't hit 1 realistic putt all day. Bunkers full of rocks, other then that course is fine, but no Marshalls and people just popping in and out skipping holes flew threw 9 holes then jammed up bad 2 4 somes and a group of 5. Ridiculous. People.inside nice and starter nice but overall place is below par,
Slow day
There was a frost delay so golfers were backed up when play began. Also many of the greens are in bad shape.
Tough conditions
Some of the traps don’t have any or little sand and nearly all the greens are in poor shape. Otherwise it is an interesting experience.
Wait for Greens to Recover
Lee’s Hill is a great course setup with a lot of challenging holes that force you to keep the driver in the bag off the tee. Unfortunately the greens have taken a big hit. The back greens are in better shape than the front, but overall they’re very patchy and bumpy. Hoping they get them back for next season since this is a fun course to play, especially for the money.
Thursday Golf
I haven’t played the course in quite some time. I really do like the layout. I was just very disappointed in the greens. The pin position was at 3 and I felt like I really could not get an accurate play as the the greens were in bad condition, bumpy with a lot of craters. I will definitely play again but will wait till next season and hope for a better experience
A big miss.
Hard to say anything bad about Lees Hill, typically. This round was far from the conditions I saw over the summer.
Greens are in disarray. Grass all over the bunkers (Not a major deal just unsightly).
On a high note, I'm sure the greens will be under control by the time it warms up again and we will be back.
