At the Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, Pete Dye uses the rolling terrain in an almost links-style design.
Straying from fairways can put you in the fescue grass, but this isn't the ball-gobbling fescue you'd expect from Dye. If anything Sun Mountain plays easier than Snow Mountain. The 140 slope rating from the back tees might even seem a little inflated when you're out on the course.
Which isn't to say it's a complete pushover. It's still a Dye after all. It still has bunkers you'll remember. Or lose sleep over.
Take the green-guarding bunker on the 219-yard par-3 14th. It is so steep in front that you almost have to hit the ball straight up in the air to get it out successfully. Some hackers become so unnerved by this bunker that they hit out backward, going back toward the fairway to escape. Yes, even at his kindler, gentler best, Pete Dye can make golfers retreat on a course.
Sun does not hit you with much water, but it makes good use of the vast Paiute landscape. There are huge desert areas between the holes, giving each hole a sense of isolation. You're not going to be observing someone's shank on a parallel fairway.

upon driving to the course it doesn't look like there's any life there, but wow the courses there are beautiful with magnificent views and great golf. the staff is very friendly and accommodating..I would play this place again
Usually windy
This was my 3rd time at Paiute, and it is a nice set up. However each time it has been windy so maybe the location is prone to this.
This time was extreme and many players cut their round short and were leaving with excessive winds, so strong that they were blowing the ball off the greens along with anything loose on the golf cart.
Its a nice facility but beware of the winds.
We found a secret Vegas gem
We were all surprised to see this resort only 30 min from our downtown hotel. After playing one day we canceled our other tee times to go back and play a different course at this resort. Will play this place again. Well worth the money and the staff pushes this place to the top of our list.
Great course
As a lady golfer this course was fantastic since they thought about bathrooms and the availability on the course. The greens and fairways were well maintained. The beverage cart was seen about every four holes. Would definitely play this course again.
Really nice course in the middle of the desert
I really enjoyed this course. It was in great shape. The staff was friendly. The pace of play was the only issue. It was okay at first but the people in front of us got really slow about halfway through the round. I'm not sure if it was because of the group in front of them but they took such a long time putting at every hole. Other than that, everything was great.
Ithe first nine hole were amazing, but cold.
However, it was so cold and windy we did not finish 18 holes we booked. Wish there could have been a cold /wind reimbursement of some kind .
Spectacular
Greens and fairways were in great condition. Great pace of play. All pros and no cons….I would play this course again without hesitation.

Great course and amazing facilities. A tad pricy but overall amazing! Will be back for sure!
Great course
This course was awesome. I was late getting in because of my flight. I called ahead and they could not have been more accommodating. I will definitely be going back
Great Course for the money
Great course, awesome layout and challenging at the same time. Piece of plate was absolutely amazing on a Wednesday. Would definitely recommend as one of the best public courses outside of Vegas. This is a hidden gem we played the sun course.
Great course- tough pin positions
Great course, had just been areated so greens were slow. But great pin positions and hole layouts !
