Amazing deal and very good winter condition.
Well worth the money and the course was in very good condition considering it is winter with cold weather, snow and rain.
Mountain course with tight tree line
a lot of blind shots, undulating greens and horrible pin placements. Don't even think of walking it. Our cart barley got up some of the embankments and the asphalt cart paths were all torn up.
We had several pin placements where we would hit the putt up past the hole and see if we could make it from behind the hole..and we did. it is ridiculous to place a hole where after you hit the putt the balls comes back past where you started from...all four players...really!!
Beware the greens
Have played at Generals Ridge at least once a year for over 10 years. $15 greens fee on a warm Friday December day was to good of a deal to pass up.. Course was in good shape for so late in the season.
Beware the greens. Very difficult as the slope on some greens is almost unfair.
3.5 Stars....Interesting Layout
Layout is interesting and very different than your typical NOVA golf course. Fairways are very narrow and the greens are undulated. Bring lots of balls cause you will need plenty of them. Can not comment on pace of play since we were the first group out.
Challenginglayout
Very challenging layout ... Very enjoyable course and very helpful staff ... Course conditions good ... Greens in very good shape ... Bring your "A" game .
Not fancy amenities but an incredible value!!
General's Ridge GC
Awesome layout, every hole unique in its own way. Very hilly with very steep downhill holes and some with slightly uphill. Course conditions are spotty in some locations but overall good no issues with a slight roll here and there. Greens overall very nice, great grass and rolled smooth at medium speed, downhillers had a tendency to roll out. Green complexes also very nice with alot of slope. Not many bunkers, don't recall being in one. Not long but difficult and penalizing course, not for the beginner but was a pleasure to play and will play again someday.
No rain check
Golf course condition is not bad. Just after start playing 4-5 holes its began rain, but they said there's no rain check availability !
Difficult course
It's a very tough course to play. Lots of hills, quite narrow and the greens are frustrating. It's was challenging. Also be careful driving the cart few spots where you can get in trouble. Overall good time but I doubt I will come back.
Ok Golf
Hard course. Definitely not for beginners. Not quite worth the money.
First time newbie -- good time!
I went to the course on a Sunday afternoon and was greeted by friendly staff members and pursued on to the driving range. I was playing as a single and ended up pairing up with a 2 some which became a 3 some and I made it a 4 some (3 carts). The only downfall (other than my playing) was the pace of play but everyone had a great time. I recommend you come play!
Kinky Course
There is only one other course I've played that is this unusual and that's Tobacco Road in the Pinehurst area of NC.Conditions were just OK. The greens were pretty badly pitted due to volume of play and lack of golfer care. I started as a single and flew through the front 9 but once I caught up it was almost 3 hours on the back. This was an extremely challenging course, lots of elevation and blind shots and pretty unfair if you don't know it well.
Variations and Good Value
I played this course on a Friday night for 21 dollars. When I play by myself I usually get around the course in 3 hours or less. I saw the reviews about this course being hard and narrow which made me excited to play it. The thing I loved the most about this course is that not one hole resembled the one before it! It was a completely different challenge with every hole which tested all of your skills. There were a few holes where I couldn't see the green and didn't know where to hit the ball but other than that I had an amazing time! I've played five different courses in VA and this has been my favorite so far! I usually shoot in the high 70s. This course was fun and I saw 12 deer as I went around the course, which added to the feel. I enjoyed my round especially for only 21 dollars for greens fees and a cart.
Don't waste your time
This was my first time playing here and the condition of the course was very disappointing. The tee boxes were rock hard, the bunkers had mud instead of sand and the greens were riddled with unrepaired ball marks.
The staff was very friendly, but there are better courses in the area.
Tight Fairways and Blind Shots
This course has one of the most challenging layouts in NOVA. The price is certainly worth a round to experience it. This course is laid out so that every hole has a hill or valley and rarely are you hitting flat shot. Many of the holes have a blind approach to the green or are 90 degree doglegs. The course challenges you to hit shots to run close to the green and not always at the green. The greens were in good shape though the tee boxes need some work. Many of the holes you tee off through a narrow gap of very mature trees. Players who can draw the ball will do well, others who tend to slice a little off the tee are in trouble from the start.
Not sure I like this course
I don't mind golf courses that are difficult. I don't like courses with blind shots. There are several holes with blind shots to the green. There are also a couple holes where you have to hit way less than driver on.
The greens were pretty bumpy, but that could be from all the rain.
Staff sucked
We played 10 holes when the rain started , we hid under a tre for awhile than drove the course back to the clubhouse and asked for a partial raincheck and were told we made the turn yo long ago and said we played more than we did, I will not play this course or recommend it to anyone based on the girls attitude in the pro shop.
Great Course, Challenging, Loved It
I don't know if it's true but another reviewer said that General's Ridge is, "The hardest municipal course in northern Virginia." I can agree that that's probably right. I can also agree with this being one of the most awesome courses under $50 for riding 18 in Nova. Rolling hills, challenging valleys, high holes and tight passes. As long as you don't lose your balls and keep up your pace of play you should have fun. Note: Pace of play is a huge deal here because of the elevation changes a small backup on any hole can cause a huge problem for people thereafter as the issue aggravates itself.
Watch out for snakes, deer, turtles, frogs... It's like National Geographic out there.
General Ridge golf Course
Course is in great condition except for the tee boxes. Several tee boxes lack grass. Fairways and Greens was in great shape. The course required me to use the majority of my clubs.
Thank you for coming out. We hope to see you again soon!
Initial thoughts
I was at first skeptical of trying to play this course as I did not think it would be all that great. From reading reviews looking at pictures and overall facility but, in fact it surprised me and was a well worth my time playing. Course was in great shape (minus a few tee boxes that were dirt, not sure why). Challenging and made you think your way through each hole. Also - allowing for use of every club was a nice treat as some courses your don't need all your clubs. Definitely will play this course again with a hot deal from golf now.
The marshall that was out there was very nice and personable and was nice to have a marshall pushing along the pace of play.
Thank you for coming out an trying the course. We do hope to see you again soon.
We are glad you liked the course. We hope to see you out here again.
