Editor's Note: Course closed for businss in 2022.

This is the kind of place the locals actually play. The kind of place that offers regular Sunday champagne brunches and New Year's Eve parties in the clubhouse. Mesquite's low green fees bring them in (under $100 even in Palm Springs' ultra expensive peak season). Its mountain backgrounds and golf along the bottom of a streambed are what bring them back.

Mesquite Golf and Country Club in Palm Springs isn't a long course by any stretch of today's standards. It comes in at 6,312 yards from the back tees. Locals find that fits just right. Again, it's Palm Springs. Many of the locals are cashing retirement checks between drives. A little shorter does not necessarily mean uninteresting though.

There are eight small lakes out on Mesquite and when the water's running in the stream it plays with some kick. At the same time, it's very friendly to women, seniors, anyone who finds distance to be a challenge. The 366-yard par-4 ninth is illustrative of a course that regularly lets average hackers go for the green.

So much fun

Mesquite is such a fun course. Yes, conditions aren’t PGA west. Yes, it can get a bit busy cause you might be behind a wedding party. Who cares. Get out early in the morning if you really care about speed of play. Greens are really fun to approach and putt on. Be sure to tuck a few beer in your bag

Four

The weather was perfect. After that, a lot of room for improvement. The course layout was ok. There were a few gravel traps (formally known as sand), the greens were very firm, the tee boxes were not level and the bridge was washed out at 16/18. The course needs a lot of maintenance and the pro shop needs a facelift. Something they are pretty good at in Palm Springs. I am glad we were able to get a last minute tee time on Saturday. Now I know why..

Nothing fancy and pace of play horrible.

Too many people crammed into time slots only makes the pace of play worse. Construction all over the course . Fairways have lots of brown spots. Pro shop has hardly any merchandise , very plain. The starter was the best part. He was nice and let me go off the back 9 as the front was packed. Good place for tune up and that’s why it is cheaper than most courses here.

Just fair for the money.

Pro shop did not open in time for early tee time. Could not warm up on the range because it was being cut. Decent challenging course for the money.

Just okay

Pretty simple layout but don’t let that lull you into a false sense of security. There is trouble to be found and you still have to hit golf shots to score well. The course needs investment and I’m not sure it will get that, but it’s priced low to accommodate for that.

Recovery

This course has not recovered from the last flood, mostly because they have not tried. It will be unplayable after a little rain.

Palm Springs golfing

You get what you pay for as they say. Mesquite is a nice flat course with breath taking views and a well maintained. It reminds me a muni course that gets a lot of play and could always use a bit larger budget. Some of the greens were rough, new grass growing, but it is February. Would I come back, you bet!
