Located on the famed 17-mile-Drive, Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach was the first course in the United States to be owned and operated by an amateur golf association, the Northern California Golf Association. Originally opened in 1986 and designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.,Poppy Hills is a challenging, par-71 venue that weaves through the Del Monte Forest and has played host to several renowned tournaments, including the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am from 1991-2009. In 2014, it received an extensive, $10 million renovation by RTJ Jr. The project was first and foremost aimed to improve environmental responsibility, and cut water consumption by reducing the amount of irrigated turf -- about 60 acres -- while also extending the layout to over 7,000 yards. From a playability perspective, all the rough was removed and doglegs were softened. The course was awarded "Best Renovation" that year by all four major golf publications.

Aerated and sandy

Called ahead asking about course conditions and was told it was just a light aeration and would still play fast. They were so wrong. Along with aerating, the fairways were in the middle of being heavily sanded. Every putt was left short, played with a guy who played there often and he was having a very tough time adapting to how slow they were.
Also, played early in the morning so the tee boxes weren’t even set yet, so for a first timer it was difficult trying to find which tee to hit from. Lastly, the fog was very thick. Couldn’t see a whole hole until 7 (teed off 10 to start). I guess people here are semi used to it but for someone from Arizona, I wish I could have seen one of the beautiful holes I know that are there.

Poppy Hills Golf

Poppy Hills was a bonus round on our vacation to the Monterey Peninsula. We saw it on our drive in and was able to grab a last minute tee time through Golf Now. The course was just perfect and it turned out to be our second favorite course of the week only eclipsed by Pebble Beach.

Great Pebble Beach Option!

If you are playing courses in the Pebble Beach area and it is your first time, I would recommend Poppy Hills but of course only after the usual suspects. Poppy Hills is one of the more low key options in the area. It does not have the sweeping ocean views that people come to expect from playing on the Peninsula. However, the golf course has an excellent layout and is certainly worth the experience, especially if your budget might not be at Pebble Beach Golf Links levels. It is quieter, not as many tourists, and is a darn good round of golf.

Slow

Everything was great for 9 holes and then we hit a brick wall - very slow play and ranger didn’t seem to be around to speed them up!
We (2 ball) had played front nine quickly - in buggy- in 1hr 20 minutes. The last nine took 2 hours 20 minutes!
Despite this it was a lovely course - challenging in parts - and certainly the best value in the Pebble Beach area.

We booked poppy for twilight golf. Error is both from golf.now and poppy mgt. they never told us that carts are Not included and that the course is playing carts
Path only!!!
We played 9 holes but paid for 18 inc carts .
Golf.now and golf mgt should tell customers what conditions are. BUMMER!!

Overrated

Did not enjoy the course at all post renovation. Why hire the same outfit to renovate when they obviously did not do a proper job the first time? Greens are hard as granite - won''t hold even high spinning shots. No rough to stop ball from rolling a mile over the green. New par 3 nothing special. Ruined the former 8th green - now the 18th by putting in a hazard that takes away the option of going for green in 2 shots. Bunkers very inconsistent - some with dusting of sand and rock underneath, some where ball completely submerged to where you couldn't see a dimple on the ball. No water, no cart girl. Lastly $25 per person for a cart is ridiculous - but throw in "Cart path only" and you have to be insane to pay the money. This course was built to minimize maintenance and water - all the other talk about a fast course is just camouflage for saving money. What a true disappointment.

Course Layout is difficult have a few hidden bunkers and slopes

Big greens and slopes are everywhere. Our scores high because ball always roll off green to thick rough and need to chip again.

Cold day of golf

Club house: Very impressive. Has presence.
Staff: Extremely helpful. Starter, cart staff, restaurant, all around very well professionally mannered.
Layout: Challenging. Very few straight holes. Slight elevation change. Greens putted at decent speed and the fairways were in good shape. Few green hole placements were questionable.
Weather kept me shivering (SoCal guy) so that was a bummer. But, overall a very nice experience. I'll definitely come back for a challenge.

2nd time on "revamped course"

It was wonderful to take carts out on the course. The waste bunkers (even tho it was my 2nd time playing in them) were a challenge. My A/B dissolved when we had to wait ALOT!!. And, as usual, the putting was a challenge. The marshall and starters and staff were very friendly. The practice range was an added help. But we are so lucky to have such a wonderful course open to NCGA.

Nice layout

Nice fairways, tee boxes, the greens were very hard and didn’t take a ball mark yet were relatively slow. The sand in the bunkers were incredibly inconsistent, I not just talking from one green to the next, I’m referring to the front bunker vs back bunker of the same green. Pace of play was good for a private course but still waited on each shot. I like to get in some range time after my round and was kicked off the range at 3:40, found that odd

Why were you in both the front and back bunker on the same green? LOL

Nice inland Monterey course

Good layout with many scenic and some challenging holes. Greens were fairly quick, most fairways had generous landing areas. If you like walking, it is a good walking course.

Great conditioned course.

This is the first time I have played since the remodel and I am not a fan. I do like the improved firm condition of the course but, 10,11 and 12 are not an improvement. Also, 18 is not better than it was prior to the remodel. The course plays fast and that's a good thing, but the shaved areas around the green are very penal, and if you're going to have those runoffs into bunkers then there should be sand in those bunkers. Some of the bunkers were like cement.

Beautiful Poppy Hills

Poppy Hills do not have to take a backseat to any one in the Pebble Beach Monterey Peninsula from the moment you arrive at backdrop you know you are at a very special place. Poppy Hills t has a certain feel and charm that you certainly don't see in Northern California it remind me of golf courses in North Carolina . Every year the Champions event is held at Poppy Hills and this year in 2018 USGA is hosting the girls amateur . So Poppy Hills is a destination course that also hold some of the biggest events in golf .

Beautiful views

This was a nice course, the staff was not as friendly as the rest of the courses available in Pebble Beach. If your paying that kind of money to play golf, they should at least be more professional like the other resorts near by.
