Poppy Hills Golf Course
About
Located on the famed 17-mile-Drive, Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach was the first course in the United States to be owned and operated by an amateur golf association, the Northern California Golf Association. Originally opened in 1986 and designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.,Poppy Hills is a challenging, par-71 venue that weaves through the Del Monte Forest and has played host to several renowned tournaments, including the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am from 1991-2009. In 2014, it received an extensive, $10 million renovation by RTJ Jr. The project was first and foremost aimed to improve environmental responsibility, and cut water consumption by reducing the amount of irrigated turf -- about 60 acres -- while also extending the layout to over 7,000 yards. From a playability perspective, all the rough was removed and doglegs were softened. The course was awarded "Best Renovation" that year by all four major golf publications.

poppy shines
his was the first time I've played the remodeled course. It was a little easier than the old course. Course conditions were excellent, great greens and lovely fairways, and good staff!
Poppy a must for Golf
THe course is in excellent condition. THey were vle to get me on as a walk-on the same day. Staff very helpful
Top course design
Outstanding layout. Great vistas on some holes. Monterey pines border every fairway. Very challenging.
Staff were terrific from bag drop to the pro shop and in the restaurant.
Great value for a course in this area.
half the story
Guys or perhaps gals: When the greens are being punched the morning that you book, someone (anyone) at GolfNow needs to tell you.
It's a great track but we hit the first tee with a bad taste in our mouths when we learned upon arrival that the greens had just been punched.
Apparently the course tried to call us but you wouldn't give them our contact info. You need full disclosure at these moments.
Not a good moment for GolfNow especially at the price we paid.
A Christmas gift...
My daughter and son-in-law gave me a gift card for Christmas. Stopped yesterday morning and walked on, played without ever waiting, enjoyed the beautiful weather and got over feeling intimidated after I realized that I should have been playing from the "2 Poppies" tees instead of the "3 Poppies".
The course is in outstanding condition and the staff made the round a very pleasant one.
Just Go Play!
Great layout and course condition. Staff was very friendly and warm. Consider CaddieNow while course is cart path only. Luke and I had a great day walking the course. Fantastic golf experience.
Poppy Hills Experience
It was our first time at Pebble, this course was affordable and in very good shape. Greens are huge and fast, the layout great and the time of play just under 4 hours walking. One of the best.
Wonderful conditions
Never played the course before the recent updates but we loved the conditions, layout, and views. Staff were all exceptional as well from Pro Shop to food service and starter. Moved quickly as expected on a weekday but the course was active but not crowded. Hope to make it back!
Nice NCGA course
It is very nice course, first time to play, and it is must play course for California golfers. The course condition is great, large green, don’t go for poles directly, use the course book to find right spot to land your ball on the green. Cart path only but easy to walk and enjoy the view, highly recommended, will back again.
Great Course, Great Fun!
We had a great time playing Poppy Hills. The course was in fantastic shape and the weather was perfect.
This course was outstanding and the weather cooperated with mid 70’s . Practice range well set up course conditions were very good but the greens were a killer extremely fast! Great golf to test you talent! Clubhouse staff were great ( with one exception) at the bag drop when they pulled out my buddies clubs wrecked the clips and he had to buy a new travel , no real effort to offer a solution or compensation were directed to a local golf shop which could not make the repair.
The Hidden Gem of Pebble Beach
My experience at Poppy Hills was incredible! The staff was friendly and helpful and the range was really well kept. The course is very open on the fairways and just challenging enough on the greens to keep your focus on a landing point. The fairways and bunkers were in perfect condition. The only bummer when we played was that the greens must have been aerated a few weeks prior because they were just a tad bit sandy and had me leaving putts that should have been fast falling way short of the hole. I'm sure it was just because of that though, because I could easily see those greens playing nice and pure on a normal day. Overall was very happy with the value of the course! Having played all of the other Pebble Beach courses, this one was right up there in layout and quality at a fraction of the price! Definitely recommend and can't wait to play again!
New Poppy Hills
My first time playing to newly renovated Poppy Hills.
I've played the course many times over the years. Enjoyed the new course layout and the total experience when playing on or near Pebble Beach. The pace of play was a bit slow due to a 5-some in front of us. This, the marshal said was an anomaly...I hope so.
.
Great renovation
Played yesterday on a cool, beautiful sunny winter day. Course was in excellent shape, greens medium fast. The fairways are firm and fast so it doesn't play quite as long as the scorecard, but it's still a heck of a challenge that tests every part of your game. You can use some of the greenside slopes to your benefit, particularly to the right of par 3 11th and par 3 18th. Putting can be deceiving if you don't pay attention to the overall slope of the land towards the ocean. Staff was very friendly. Only complaint was no beverage cart and the halfway house was closed. The restaurant is great but its a full service restaurant and not a place to pick up a quick snack at the turn. NCGA members have a gem - great value at the NCGA member rate.
Amazing day at a great golf course
Poppy Hills exudes love and respect for the game. The renovation made the course more playable and enjoyable.
The staff is awesome. The greens had been partially plugged but with the tiny plugs so no impact whatsoever; greens were fast and true.
And playing at 9am in the middle of December in short sleeves was awesome. I play here about 3-4 times a year and this is more the norm than the exception.
What a blessing to the world of golf.
Great deal for high quality course
Wonderful layout. The conditions were impeccable. I haven’t played except for 9 holes on Executive course a week ago, since the middle of July. A major muscle injury that left me unable to swing a club till the end of September. So to have Poppy be the first course was perfect. Can’t wait to play it with my boys in the near future.
Good time
Great golf course. Very slow play on the back nine. 3 groups deep on every tee box. No ball washers on the course.
Birthday celebration golf
This was the last golf day to the Monterey Peninsula, we had already played Spyglass, Spanish Bay and Pebble Beach. It was my husband's 65th Birthday and he had his best round of the weekend. We had prearranged a caddy who was fantastic and certainly helped on all of those tricky, fast greens. We would all play this course again.
