Hyde Park Golf Club
About
Hyde Park Golf Club, built in 1925 by Donald Ross, is one of the oldest in Florida. In 1971, the golf course was purchased by former touring professionals Billy Maxwell and Chris Blocker, who have successfully restored it.
Rolling hills, gorgeous Spanish Oaks and towering Southern Pines make Hyde Park a lasting experience. A tour stop for the men's and women's professional golf tours in the 1940s and 1950s, the golf course gained a place in history during the 1947 Jacksonville Open. The great Ben Hogan took an 11 on the par-3 sixth, which became known as "Hogan's Alley." It has a deep-faced bunker to the right and water to the left.
Hyde Park Golf Club measures 6,468 yards from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 71, and it has a slope rating of 124.

Bang for your buck
Course conditions are getting better. Worth the time and money on a mid day hot deal.
Improving
I had not played there in about a year but you can definitely see the progression of the conditions 🤔
Staff are not friendly
We were a group of 4 and 3 of which are relatively new to golf. We knew our pace of play was slower so if we finished a hole and the next group was catching up, we’d let them pass. The ranger totally ignored that the groups that were originally behind us ended up in front of us and the ranger came up to us on two occasions telling us to play faster and that we are 30 minutes behind (because we let 3 groups play ahead this was inaccurate) so this did nothing but infuriate us. We understood we were slower so let others play ahead, the other players were grateful yet the ranger made the situation worse.
Several substandard greens and tee boxes
We were disappointed with the condition of several greens since the last time we played the course. A month ago they were plush and fast. Now there are several greens with bare areas and numerous tee boxes where it is difficult to find grass to tee off.
Donald Ross Potential Jem
Just go play it- it’s a little scruffy around the edges, some of the greens need work, but I loved the layout and challenge of the sloping greens, that were running great. Don’t get behind the greens or the ball above the hole. Upgraded carts - waiting in GPS screens but GPS still installed , so you’ll get beeped and can only go in reverse if you get too close to greens. Clubhouse is in disrepair but they have a nice food trailer and clean bathrooms. The driving range is really nice - good turf with grass- you get aged range balls in a ziploc bag from the proshop. The antennas are a constant sight but not really in play- just on 10 Tee Ball. Go Play and have fun.
Bucket List Course
Always a good golfing experience. Course is challenging with elevation changes, doglegs, bunkering, etc. Add in the historical factor plus a Donald Ross design and you have an awesome "back to the future" mix going on. I played in Feb. '24 so some of the fairway grass shows winter conditions: bare, dormancy & tight lies. But, all the greens & tee boxes are in excellent shape. The main clubhouse remains under renovation so there are still temporary buildings in use. If you haven't played HP you gotta do it.
Beautiful winter day for golf
Played midday on a beautiful day for golf in the Florida winter. The course was wet from some rain, but very playable. Some Fairways and greens were thin and had been sanded. Tearing down the clubhouse, so no permanent restrooms or food.
Under major construction
For the price it fine, greens were in good shape and were exceptionally fast.
Finally got here
This is probably the last of the accessible causes in Jacksonville that I've gotten to play. It took a while to get here but it was worth it. I didn't realize the history of the course as it was a PGA tour stop at one time and the great Ben Hogan took an 11 on the par 3 sixth hole.
There is even a plaque commemorating the event on the 6t h tee. In his honor, unintentionally, I too popped a ball into the water. This proves, as I thought, that I am very similar to Ben Hogan.
The course isn't in great shape because it is mid-February but it isn't bad either. The man in the pro shop was happy to discuss the history of the course and point out the list of past champions and to remind me to see the plaque on the 6th hole.
Unfortunately, the old clubhouse is undergoing renovations and I wasn't able to get in there. I surely will be back and will be able to walk where the champions walked.
As for the course, the typical Donald Ross feature of a false front is evident on several greens. Be careful and, on the other hand, try not to be above the pin as it is impossible stop the ball and you can run right off the false front. This makes a very tricky shot to the green where you want to be between the pin and a drop off.
A short course but very tricky. Staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. Would definitely play here again.
Not disappointed, but not impressed
Drainage for water is poor, rather large puddles even a day after a somewhat moderate amount of rainstorm. Some of the fairways were pretty much mud in certain spots. Course layout was really nice and I enjoyed it as a newbie golfer. This is probably a better course when it’s drier out. just wish cartpaths were smoother.
My friends who are better at golf complained profusely about the teeboxes, but i didnt really notice any difference?
Thank you for your feedback. We are glad to hear that you are noticing all the hard work we are putting into the course. We hope that you visit again soon!
